Improvements to ESO immersion - Conversation UI and Subtitles

I have been playing ESO since one of the first betas, and there's so much to love about the game. However, one of the biggest drawbacks was the Muppet facial animations. That said, the way the conversation UI is setup, your eyes pretty much always divert to the dialogue subtitles and responses half of the screen, rather than focusing on the NPC.

This was good because I would generally just read the text and select a response. The NPC was there, but really just a background fixture, rather than a vehicle to drive the plot.

HOWEVER! Now that the facial animations are much, much better and the NPCs can emote more, I find that the UI is in need of a change, whether it be optional or not. The NPCs now are able to portray far more and they're interesting to talk to.

My suggestion is this: rather than have the screen essentially split in two, why not have the option to center the NPC and dialogue (much like we've seen in Bioware games and Skyrim). As it stands, NPCs are being ignored (as is the hard work of the animators!) and the game is less immersive, as a result.

I think this would go a long way in bettering the game. One thing that would also be a great addition is the ability to turn off subtitles. I often fall victim to reading an NPCs conversation far before they actually communicate it, which makes what they're trying to say far less impactful.

When there is subtitles I tend to skip the dialogue, which is not good for the fun factor. In Skyrim there were no subtitles, so I actually paid attention to the dialoge and storylines. I would like this to be a toggleable option, whether or not the subtitles will show.

That's exactly it. I'm the same way. I'm not overly concerned with whether or not they change the UI, but having an option to turn off subtitles would be awesome.

My english is generally good enough to follow the conversations... though every so often I still need to glance at the text when I am unsure about a word. So I for onw would like to keep them.

The spit screen... that one I don't really care that much about I suppose. Though I guess it is useful for longer conversations... but not that useful that I'd prefer it over a more immersive "NPC center, with subtitles" UI...

I have actually thought about this numerous times. It would really be nice to at least have an option to turn off the in conversation NPC text dialogue, so you can focus on the character.

I also have a bad habit of skimming through text and just hitting the "just give me the damn quest" button otherwise.

But I find I enjoy the game much more when listening to the dialogue in full.

That's why I believe that it should be an option. There are times when I just want to rush through quests or am watching a show and don't want sound. In these circumstances, subtitles are great. However, there are times when I really want to get immersed in the game, and having subtitles and the current UI kind of ruins that for me.

Thanks! That's pretty awesome. I'll check it out. Definitely a step in the right direction.

Update: my only issue with it is that the timing can never be right because every NPC talks at different speeds, which is maddening for my OCD lol. I still like it better, though :)

Don't let this thread die, people. Being able to toggle off subtitles is a much needed option.

I agree entirely. Hopefully our ZOS friends take notice.

I recently made the subtitle tab for that window but after much use of inactivity, it disappears... so I have to hit escape to show it again.

I have another suggestion can we get rid of that horrible yellow and red outline that thing is immersion breaking....

Is there a way to turn it off?

You know a much better thing to do to increase immersion would be to develop a way to do quests without quest markers. They will never go back to a questing system like say in Morrowind but if they did, it would be awesome. You actually have to search around and use your brain. That is what I wish for.
I'm kind of a small deal!

Use the addon pinkiller and that will help :)

You can adjust this in the options. You can change the strength of the outline or remove it completely.
