[Traders without Borders] ~ Welcoming & Aiding the influx of new players in March

Traders Without Borders

Whilst discussing with my Guild about potential events to run, a gem of an idea was conceived. An idea to aid the surge of Coldharbour refugees arriving back in Tamriel proper by donating basic provisions to them to help them on their way, commencing after the transition to the B2P model.
Rather than monopolise this idea, I decided it would benefit these poor Soulshriven the most, and the other great Guilds spread across Tamriel, if I collaborated with them on this large-scale relief effort. And so I present to you, Traders without Borders.

The objective of the event is to welcome new players into the Elder Scrolls Online community and show them just how awesome it is to be a part of - to do so, on the 18th of March at 5:30pm GMT and commencing Saturday (21st of March) at 12:30pm GMT I propose that, en masse to ensure we cover as many server shards as possible, greet new players emerging from their respective Starter Houses in the three Alliances, offering them friendly advice and 'Provisions Packages' via Mail with a short standard text with key information and directions to the Guild Stalls in that city.

On top of this, we would also aim to provide specially discounted low-tier gear on our Guild Stores for the first week or so post-B2P so players can easily get the things they're after to progress.

As an example, my particular Guilds' provisions packages have been agreed to include the following, after a poll.
  • 5 Lockpicks
  • 5 Health pots
  • 3 Stamina pots
  • 3 Magicka pots
  • 3 Soul gems
  • 4 Food

This will serve to get people started on their adventures, something for the community to rally around and dampen any negative sentiment about B2P & the Crown Store, also I suppose as a side effect, away for Guilds to potentially gain new members and build alliances with other Guilds, and get to know one another.

By all means, participate in this autonomously but I would love it if fellow Guildmasters got in contact with me to collaborate on this great effort via either in-game mail/whisper (@Animus_Igneus) or alternatively by messaging me on Enjin here on my Guilds' official website, which as far as I know should be possible as long as you have an Enjin account.

Let's give them a warm welcome!

~Ciraph

DISCLAIMER EDIT:

To address some fundamental misunderstandings being repeatedly commented about - this is to celebrate the special occasion of the B2P transition and is not "big business", or an "advertising campaign". It's for the community to come together and celebrate a new era of ESO and welcome the "next generation" of players.
If you think it will "make new players feel entitled" you're mistaken, no "rules" are being made about participation, just examples of how my guild is doing it, no "new standards" are being set for community helpfulness (you're all awesome enough as-is  ) either.
I think that pretty much covers people's unusual complaints about a fun, charitable event.

I already give away 1 to 2 sets of either blue or green heavy armor once a week as it is along with any recipes I find to new players. I feel that is doing my part. Although if I scale to the level of the environment the iron ore will become a pain to collect again and that may slow down to 1 or 2 sets every 2 to 3 weeks

Fair enough :) I generally craft new players gear free of charge if I see them at a loose end in /zone chat and give them odds and ends, since tier 1 mats aren't too hard to come by. I'm glad there's more people out there that are happy to take the time out to help people.

Hopefully this idea catches on since it's not asking much, and I'd certainly love to get in contact with other Guilds to expand the scale of my event.

I always wished some one would have done it for me but then again at pre release we were all starting out from nothing and fighting bots for everything.... Im glad the bots are gone

    EDIT

atm I am working on scraping up the mats so I can give some lucky newbie a Legendary Level 14 Dwemer Armor / Weapon set from the Vamp Kiss set piece...... Dwemer scrap takes forever to farm though and the frame is uber expensive

Yeah, so far I think the best I've given to someone was a level 10 set of Green Ancient Elf gear with Blue weapons. Can't exactly go around mass-producing it though unfortunately ;)

Neither an I but by using Iron ingots I can make to full sets of level 12 to 14 gear with about 120 ingots, I have an abundance f honing stones and my armor is good to go for a while so Dwarven oil can be used a little more freely ATM

Haha unfortunately that's not something we can mass-produce and store easily, could be done to a limited extent by listing such things on the Guild Store at discounted prices.

Thanks, my Deputy GM has actually done the logistical calculations required to carry this out, and we worked out it'll cost about ~37,000 gold to equip every 100 new players - for larger Trade Guilds like ours that shouldn't be a problem to source internally but smaller Guilds would require more individual contribution to get there.

@ZOS_TristanK Sooo...anyone at ZOS feeling generous? I know you devs play the game too and probably have the same inventory problems I do! Think of it like #SOULAID...us mortals can only do so much but an appearance from Geldof or help from sponsors would be much appreciated :p

Thinking about it, if this was to go server wide and ZOS do think it's a good idea, it would be nice if they could say increase the Guild Store bank capacity by 100 to facilitate the option for newbs to purchase cheap items from the Guild Traders, but have the system restrict the purchasers to only Level5 below...or something like that? Those 100 spaces would have to be defined however?

Not sure if something like that could be added into the Guild system @ZOS_TristanK ?

I understand your worry, and though I suppose it's a valid criticism and unfortunately in real life a lot of people do think that way, that's not really how the world works, otherwise no company would ever do a 'try before you buy' or 'first one free' scheme and there are THOUSANDS of such offers - your logic is flawed there.

Though that's not the point of this, we're just trying to do something nice to make people feel welcome and get started on their journeys in Tamriel, it has nothing to do with profit, though it'll bring us a bit of attention I suppose as a side effect, and as the current Guildmaster of the oldest trade Guild knocking about on the EU megaserver, believe me, I've thought this through.

A couple of soul gems, pots, lockpicks and food is negligible when you consider that in giving these out, if you're going to be a spoilsport and ignore the charity & fun about this, the following:
    • You're doing something nice for people who might not have played MMO's much, and may even be at a loss as to where to start.
    • As with any sort of charity, you're not doing it for personal gain, you're doing it for fun and to help people.
    • You're alerting them to the existence of these items straight away, and not giving them a large amount of them. If they want more, they now have an idea of where to purchase them, as well as other tips in the mail.

    Side effects:
    • By doing this you're bringing attention to your Guild, which will bring attention to your particular trader, as well as new, active recruits.
    • Within the mail as well as the items you're directing them towards the location of Guild stalls, which in itself is generating more trade from your charity.

You don't donate money to Oxfam expecting a return on your 'investment'
You're saving lives, and in this case, you're helping new players start out.

If anything, and I mean this in the nicest possible way, you're the entitled one.

Well, what we're going to try and do is offer low-level items for discounted prices for a week or two on our Guild Store, I'm sure they'll be selling like hot-cakes if people know where to look (which is the aim of the message attached to the 'provision pack')

It is a few little things - a starter kit. Giving them a taste for what they can buy more of later on. Very new players won't have much in game cash to spend in guild stores anyway but by giving them a few freebies we make them welcome and let them know that the trade guilds exist and are there for all their future shopping needs (apart from wedding dresses ...)

This is a great idea. It also helps to maintain the attitudes the community currently has - jump in & help out in a fight if someone's struggling, crafting free research items etc. I think if we treat the newbies well, they will be more likely to also help out others. I don't know if my trading guild is participating, but if not would definitely be keen to find one that is.

Individual players may like to hang out in lower level zones for a bit to answer questions - you can always be busy leveling your lergerman (I have no idea how to spell that) skill line at the same time.

Great idea with a great motivation. My guild More Than Fair on the NA server would love to get involved and help out. Please contact me in game @ashlee17.

More Than Fair already hold a monthly crafting fair event to help people (members and strangers alike) level their crafts, make set gear for lowbies, share crafting tips and gennerally run amok.

Goods are donated by generous guild members and used to make deconstruction gear for those needing to lvl there crafts. We also make plenty of free trait items to help people research.

Our guild has found that events such as these help the community, introduce our guild to other players in tamreil and gives us a excuse to come together and have some fun.

Our next crafting fair is being held this Sunday at 10pm est in Mornhold for the Ebonheart Pact. I invite you all to come along and visit our event. It could help you get some ideas for co-ordinating the welcome event.

Hm, this Idea have some Likes and Dislikes.

For the first, helping a new Player isnt a new Idea, many Guilds/People do this. But this "Idea" here have some negative Options too.

New Players feel Special, and oh yes they are happy about the Help in the first Time. But then they demand more and more, because they think are special and if they get a NO, they will be frustrated.

How they can learn to Support themselves, if they get too much Support? See the Start as a Tutorial, so they can learn how the Game as whole Thing works.

Will you start a Welcome-Party for every new Player, again and again? How the old Players think about that, they started without such "Bling-Blang".

How about that the Player says :* I thought everyone is welcome and get some Money and Support at the Start?*.

You will have this for a Standard? That a new Player feels special because he joined a Game like other Players do often before him? Why?

Does this new Player something Special for the Game, like the old Players do? Have the new Players supports TESO like the old Players with his Money and Time? No, and for sure how many of the new Players are those Peoples who have said "Teso sucks, it is a bad Game" before?

Now this Players come to the Game because it has no Subscription and the 1.6 will arrive. Thats all. Sure, not every new Player think so, some are really new to Teso.

For me it is no Problem to help a new Player if he acts and ask friendly, if he earns the Help through good Manners. The Character of a Player, his Manners and social Compentence will motivate me to help. Nothing else.

If a new Player starts in the Game and says:* I hear Teso has a friendly Community, where is my Starter-Package*, i will leave him alone.

Teso has had a friendly Community before 1.6, and will have it after that. The Guilds dont need a new System, the most of them helped before too.

To be friendly and helpfull is a good Decision, but it has to come from the Heart and not through Social-Welcome-Programms.

So i think, if the new Players act friendly and prove that their want to be a Part of the Teso - Community, they will get Help enough. The Game has a good Community, a helpfull one.

Don't worry, I knew you weren't advertising or anything, no need to remove it. I'm just glad this idea's getting more steam and attention from other GMs - I'm still trying to contact others in-game so the more that see this thread and come to me/do it autonomously, the better.

Hey, I can see that you've raised some points I responded to in an earlier post (in a much more constructive and polite way, thanks for that!)

It seems that, in short, you're concerned that it will make new players feel entitled, and that they will expect handouts all the time, and you feel like they don't necessarily 'deserve' them if they haven't supported the game as long as us older Subscribers have, or if they aren't as enthusiastic about the game.

My response to that, is that this is a one-off, friendly event to welcome the initial group of new players joining up to the game, as a way to bring the community together at a time when some people may be disillusioned with the B2P changes. I don't agree that it will make new players expect special treatment constantly because of it (see my previous response to a similar concern for reasons why) and I certainly don't think that we should discriminate based on whether they've subbed or not.

Whatever a new players' reason for coming to the game, they're still a new player and I'm personally happy to welcome them all in this event!

First, i dont discriminate new Players. I have marked the Sentence to help you see, what i mean.

I often start as a new Player and i am happy for a helpfull Community. But i earned me the Help through my social Behaviour and not only because i am new. This is a important Part in every social "Playfield", in Live too.

You or others want to start some Events, thats ok for me. My Guild does this long Time before, we have PvP/PvE Beginner Groups, where the new Players can learn some Mechanics. The Guild in there i play does this long Time before this Thread, and we will do more after this.

But we will do this for all Players, new or not, we are helpfull to all in our Guild. But to be a Part of something, you have to earn and give something too.

A new Player is nothing more Special, than an old Player. We help them both equally. I hope that helps to understand, because my English isnt very good.

To help a new Player is a normal Thing, but to make social Events, Packages and Rules for it, is not a really good Idea. Because other Guilds who cant follow the "higher" Guilds will have Problems with the new Standards.

Thats my Line of Sight, i dont see any new Ära off "Helping" in Teso, the Community was helpfull enough before, and will work on it in Future too.
