I humbly submit to the forum that this new payment system may be a win/win for current, former, and future subscribers. There is a caveat which I will explore at the end of this segment regarding possible pitfalls. I hope ZOS will chime in and elaborate on some of the features of the new system that I will discuss
DLC: So in the FAQ on the ESO website about the ESO membership plus, it states that crowns will be used to purchase, content, customization, services, and in game pet/mounts. Honestly, this is great for subscribers because they will be able to get some of those customization pieces that we have been yearning for like guar mounts, different costume and armor/weapon looks and access to all the DLC game packs that come out. So as a subscriber (which all of us who have been playing the game up to this point are) you will still get access to all the content of the game and on top of that you will have extra crowns to obtain extra flare items/mounts/customization from the crown store. Therefore those of us who continue their subscription will gain a lot and have more immersion than before with only the subscription based model.
Also, think about this theory, if you are comparing ESO to the WoW system it is essentially the same (only better). It allows new players to try out the basic game free (so in essence it is almost like a trial) and then if you subscribe you get the advantage of being able to take advantage of the crown store services and DLC, customization etc. In WoW you pay for the subscription and you STILL have to pay extra on top of that for store items and services.
Caveat: most of this subscription awesomeness depends on the prices of the items in the Crown store. If it's like 5000 crowns for a guar mount well that won't get you very much bang for your buck. But it I am correct and players are able to load up on goodies (that are not pay to win items like near invincible armor, or legendary weapons) it will greatly increase the variety and interesting facets of the game.
