[NA Chillrend] DC-Only PvP Introduction/Refresher session Monday

Guts n Glory will host a free (we want nothing in return) training session for DC on Monday, January 19, at 8 pm EST.

The first 22 to join will be added to the group and be able to see the text and follow. We are doing this in an effort to combat misinformation and blatant misdirection.

We will cover the basics that seem to be missing or where player ignorance is being exploited (such as zone-chat-generals telling pugs to push resources so they miss their d-tick)

Other topics include the following:
  • *efficient* seige-engine placement
  • Zerg breaking
  • non-zergball tactics
  • buffs/debuffs
  • dos/donts of heals
  • scoring
  • siege engine combos
  • enemy buffs
  • know when you are being farmed

We will meet in Chillrend at 8pm. i will call out the group name to join a few times before 8pm, but at 8 i will begin regardless of the group size.

If there are small PvP guilds or RP/PvE guilds looking to join the war and would like some help getting started, then send me an email/message and I will be happy to help a DC-only (PvP, not concerned if you have pure PvE players playing cross faction) guild get started.

To be clear...
This is not a recruiting event. No one will be getting guild invites from us for attending, if you are interested in joining GnG you will first need to ask to join a group with us or have someone well known to us to recommend you, keep in mind we do not condone cross-faction PvP.

As an unaffiliated Thornblade EP, I think this is a really cool idea. I wish more people did this.

We just started doing this for new guild members and guild friends, and it seemed to help.

If this helps players (based on feedback and seeing evidence of it helping players) and is well received then we will continue to do it weekly and expand to multiple groups.

We have been offering to help other guilds in several ways and to varying degrees for a long time. We also have DCN for DC-only guilds who want to work together as equals and coordinate.

At about 7:45, about 2.5 hours from now I will ask in zone if anyone wants to do this with us. I will go through the list above, maybe 45 minutes, then I will answer (or try answer) any questions.

Only going to have 22 slots on this round, only going to type in group chat. GnG friends and members will be in a separate group.

If for some reason Alacrity actually shows, then we may change areas. Enemy players crashing an introductory session sounds like about the lowest, cheesiest thing that a guild could do, but...AD.

I know there will be a few DC players that will want to troll, especially if there is action on the map, but if we are ever actually going to win a competitive camp (Thorn) then we need to help each other. Among other things we should not still have players that do not understand scoring, when they have been playing for 8 months. DC players are significantly better than EP or AD, just misinformed and less organized.

Oh come now, don't be like that and take your ball to play somewhere else. Its a PvP zone my friend and we all pay a sub. We are here to have fun.

I'd advise doing as much of it as possible behind the locked DC gates, you can bet people will come to crash the session.

I really wish I would have seen this earlier! Just finished a DC skyshard/dungeon guild event tonight and I bet many of them would have enjoyed learning about PvP! If you do decide to do this again I would love to know and give a heads up to my guild!

[Edit] We are a cross faction guild but I understand the need to be loyal to one alliance. I would reiterate your rules for only allowing loyal DC PvPers to the event.

There wasn't anything on the map to take on Chillrend tonight . Blackwater Blade would probably be low pop too . I'd try taking a group into Haderous or Thornblade if you want to have action .

You missed the intent, it was to answer questions and provide the basics. The problem is that for some reason people play for eight months and "have action" and have been members of some of the other guilds and those guilds have not taken the time to explain, for example how D-Tick or how AP works. There is no doubt in my mind that certain people and certain guilds use player ignorance for gain.

We see the same people in the same guilds making easily correctable mistakes and then they, instead of taking a few minutes to help, they allow their people to continue to make mistakes or allow them to get trolled, or in one case contribute to the public shaming.

We have picked up some pretty good players that were never given a chance and only needed a little information.

I used the opportunity to write the session out and will put it on our guild website once I clean it up. I do not think that will help, there are bits and pieces of how things work everywhere, there are videos, and there are faqs, but the problems remain. Working directly with people, showing them what is meant by "siege placement" or "time on target" or why certain combinations of siege are effective is the way we know works. I am willing to give a little of my play time to help DC if players want to help themselves.

I will do this once again, perhaps next Monday. We may use Chillrend again. We do not want "action" if we wanted action we would go to Azura or Haderus and spit on a guard, which would guarantee that 40+ rabid EP/AP would show up like it was the end of the world.

Send me a friend invite in game (i just opened some friend slots) with a note to remind me. Lets discuss and see. If you are a PvE or RP guild we may be able to work together, i.e. not a PvP or PvE/PvP guild. That goes for any PvE or RP guild interested. We already have had success working with non-PvP guilds.

Very surprised at the low turn-out. I was interested in this, and would have tried to fit this in, but assumed I would be fighting a crowd to get in. Hope you were not completely discouraged and try again. I've dabbled in Cyrodil, but one of the reasons I haven't done more is cuz I don't really know what I'm doing. This is my first MMO.

I was talking to Grunt from LOM about hosting something similar for new players. Kudos on making this post and turning it into a reality, even if you had a low turnout the first time. I would suggest making a post in some of the PvE sections, since we're trying to get more players to do PvP to begin with. Also, posting in Craglorn zone chat etc. You should make ts3 a requirement though, at least for training.

We seriously need to get DC organized. If anyone is interested in learning more about the mechanics of PvP, you should still pm OP for details about the next event. I am also happy to answer any questions, and if you catch me at a good time, I might be persuaded to run a training group. /tell @hammayolettuce.

I too hope you aren't discouraged by the turnout. I wonder if short notice (1day) and the hour it was held (8pm) were a factor?

For me personaly, 8PM is just too early, I joked about wife agro before; I could sell 9PM, but at 8PM there still too much to do to settle in at the computer.

I can understand the short notice given the tendency for others to want to crash the party.

I can tell you that the interest is there, maybe with a few adjustments there might be better turnout.

Blue zerg was real last night, moreso even than normal. Wondered what was up >_>

Even still, the eight of us in GoS holding those flags inside Farragut right to the end vs all those blues goes down as one of my personal finest hours.

    Gotta do that again >_>

Also lol @ the attempt to spawn camp us, nope, not gonna happen. =D Please to not try that again k?

I am not discouraged. I know the information is useful based on feedback from members of GnG and guild friends, and the fact that some of the things I discuss are things that come up constantly when in Cyrodiil.

I will do it again. 10 PM EST seems better time. I will tentatively say 10 pm EST Monday, Jan 26.

    Don't you need opponents?

I don't really know anyone that's homed or even guested on Chillrend that's not DC except gankers.

If you really want to run a training event, would Azura Star or Haederus be the place to do it?

Otherwise, I think it's an excellent idea and hope that everyone has a really great time.

This is not about actual fighting. Most can figure that out by playing. It is the mechanics of PvP and playing as a team with other players. I do not need to to kill a player to explain D-tick, and fighting gets in the way demonstrating siege placement. Call this basic training. Almost everyone goes through the simple tutorial (or not) and jumps into battle, but there is no one that takes it a step further and explains the details around fighting.

Months ago we noticed that almost all players who join us had no clue about some of the most basic concepts of PvP, regardless of how long they had played or what illustrious guild they played with. Many had no clue that if they chase the enemy they never receive the AP for the defense or why they get AP for defense or how stealth works. ZOS has published detailed descriptions of all three of those points, but I have only found a couple people who already understood them.

We still have players using mutagen when stealthed and not just the griefers/cheaters/spys. One of the most common questions is "where is the quartermaster?" in the keep, he is in the same general location in every keep, but no one has taken the time to point that simple point out. How about the fact you can buy multiples of stones/wood/gems from merchants, rather than spamming "buy"?

I saw as recent as 3 days ago someone tried to drop a ram on a postern door. I am sure some trolled him, but I simply told him that it does not work. Where in the tutorial is that covered (it may be somewhere, but i do not recall)?

The purpose is to help DC players understand the basics and to have a solid foundation. The hope is that people will spread the ideas, such as being sure to setup siege so as to allow more engines per area

Also, this not about teaching people to fight, we are not giving away our advanced tactics to the public. Those sessions are reserved for GnG and friends only.

If players want to learn the more advanced fighting and tactics from GnG, then they need only request to play with us and receive a recommendation for a guild invite, or get a recommendation from a member or friend of the guild. We do publicly recruit from PvE, but never publicly recruit in PvP.

I look at the OP here... and I wish I could attend this, but I'm on the EU server :(

The list of the "topics" covered looks very interesting... they are all issues that I've struggled to come to terms with at one time or another. Personally, I found PvP quite challenging to get into... precisely because the learning curve is huge, and there is a severe lack of interest (for the most part) in training newcomers. I've managed to learn some stuff by asking billions of questions in the chat... but this is not necessarily ideal, because I don't always know when I'm lacking in knowledge.

Anyway, before I digress too much - I applaud the fact that you are doing this, and I wish this attitude of helping was more prevalent. At the end of the day, the more skilled PvP players there are, the better the overall game. Raise the level of skill in Cyrodiil, raise the level of fun :)
