So as I look at the forums for topics that may be of interest to me I will typically see one with a tile like, "X is Broken!" Now maybe I've wondered myself if X was broken. Oh, and look! There's the magical green symbol that tells me a DEV HAS RESPONDED! Now I'm excited because, hey, someone who actually knows what's going on has entered the conversation and maybe I can find out if X really is broken or maybe I'm just doing something wrong or don't understand how X is supposed to work. So....I scan through 8 pages looking for the magic green symbol. There it is! What does the Dev have to say?

Well, 9 times out of 10 it's, "You kids play nice or we're going to lock your thread. Stop being so mean to each other."

Do they ALSO say anything AT ALL about the subject of X? NOPE. And so while I may not post it, you can bet I am SAYING some really MEAN THINGS out loud at my hapless computer screen. And wishing perhaps just a little bodily harm on the Dev in question.

So here's what I propose. STOP WASTING MY TIME! If your response has NOTHING to do with the original TOPIC and is nothing more than waggling your finger admonishingly and waving the TOS about... DON'T make the magic symbol GREEN. Make it red...or purple...or blue...or ANY OTHER color you like. Reserve the MAGIC GREEN SYMBOL for ONLY those responses that ACTUALLY ADDRESS THE TOPIC OF THE THREAD.

Thank you.

I really like the idea of making the symbol thingie a different color like red. Doing that would also serve to warn off those of us who don't want to accidentally end up in the middle of yet another pointless flame war.

just offhand, as I understood it - the green elder scroll symbol just means it's a "staff post" - meaning, someone that works in *some* official capacity at ZOS made a post.

again, if I understood it correctly, that would mean that it's not necessarily anyone that has any input on development priorities, design, QA, etc...

so, when we say *dev post*, that's really quite misleading, again, unless I misunderstood it. In fact, I think it's quite possible that they specifically hired people to moderate the forums - in which case, that green-circle-guy's JOB is to do nothing but come online and post in the forums, things like "play nice guys" or "this post deleted for language" and etc...

I always felt that hoping that *actual* developers - e.g. - people that actually code the game, and designers that actually make design decisions about the game, was a little - would visit the forums daily and start making design and coding decisions based on what they read was...optimistic, on the part of forum-goers.

I doubt that anyone directly responsible for program or design takes their first input from forums. It'd be madness. There are like a million of us, with a million and a half different ideas about what the game is, is supposed to be, ought to be, and how, and we change our minds with every passing minute, and we freak out like madmen at the slightest hint of change, in favor of, or against, doesn't really matter...

now, I'm sure the community manager, the mods and whoever is *paid* to watch the forums pass on general trends to the people designing and coding. They point out that there's a lot of chatter about sorcs, or nightblade stealth not seeming to work right, or a gathering mob of peasants with pitchforks and torches screaming something about efftoopee...that's their job, after all

but honestly, if ZOS was coming to these forums every day, and making sweeping game design changes based off any particular article they read in the forums...I'd jump ship tomorrow! I *trust* that ZOS has people smarter, more level headed, and more forward thinking, than most of the forum community, deciding how to design their game and what to add and what to fix and how much money they have left to do what with...

because if they don't...we're in very, very big trouble

As a side note, really fond of the features associated with the green symbol as it appears on forum topics.

Mousing over the symbol gives a popup telling me how many Staff posts are contained in the thread, and clicking the symbol takes me directly to the first Staff post in the thread without having to sift through all of the pages on my own.

While I totally agree with your point about the lack of any useful posts by 'greens', you seem not to know you can click the green icon and go straight to the 'green' post.

Sadly, unlike Blizzard's forums for example, there is no link from one CM post to the next in a thread.

I currently play FFXI, FFXIV, Rift, LOTRO, GW2, WOW and ESO and ZOS are by orders of magnitude less helpful and informative than any of the others.

I actually did NOT know that so this thread has served a useful purpose! LOL However, I'd STILL like to see the green reserved for Dev responses that actually address the topic and/or answer a question.

I'm just piggybacking on Morna's idea. I think making the hand slap posts red would save reasonable people a lot of time.

Oh and I up vote the dev tracker (linked in my sig) for finding the real dev posts.

The green thing is pretty useless to me. It sucks to use, (is pretty small to click, so I don't see how it could be handicapped accessible), and doesn't tell me which green things I have already read in that thread. Only it tells me there was a ZoS employee comment somewhere in the thread.. from five min ago or 12 months and 12K posts ago.

I wish all their official communication appeared in the Dev Tracker, in a SINGLE COLUMN that included the title of the thread and a few lines of the post, so I could choose to read or not read ALL ZoS communication, even if it is "Hey, you violated the ToS." By doing this, ZoS could solve the "WE DONT HEAR ANYTHING FOR TWO WEEKS" syndrome.

I found this insightful. I think it is helpful for the moderators to 'moderate' in addition to asking questions, but, as Ms. MournaBaine has pointed out, it would be helpful if another color would indicate a moderation comment as oppossed to addressing the topic. I too have many times searched through in order to see the dev comment only to find, "Many posts have been removed. You must post in accordance with a, b, c.... please report abuse... etc." Such comments are useful and I am thankful for dev moderation in this regard, but please grant MournaBaine's request for ease of navigation.

    Sincerely,
    John
