How to do animation canceling?

tintin_milou
Hello everyone!

Hope you could help this noob with animation canceling. :D

People tell me to do light-attack and then quickly skill-attack so that light-attack animation does not show up (thus canceled) and only the skill-attack animation shows.

My problem is that my (bow) light-attack is sooooo quick (mouse button release) that most of the time my skill-attack (snipe for example) keyboard button release is not fast enough to cancel the light attack animation. The result is the target just getting the light-attack damage and then after the cast time, the skill-attack damage (back to back, not near simultaneous damage).

Does anyone have useful tips for me to do this animation canceling consistently? Make certain settings for the mouse, the keyboard? Get a better brain? :p

It's kind of a rhythm, no special settings required. The two attacks happen almost simultaneously. Stringing multiple cancels together is another rhythm and varies based on which weapon/class skill you are cancelling into.

Only advice I can offer is don't think of the skill activating when you release the mouse button, think of activating just after you press the mouse button.

    The bolded part is incorrect.

The light attack animation does show.

The crux is that the light attack animation is interrupted by a skill attack after the light attack flies, but before the complete animation is completed.

So with a bow, use your light attack. Immediately after the arrow flies off, use the skill attack (venom arrow). You should see two arrows fly off in quick succession (the first arrow is the light attack, the second arrow is the venom arrow).

Animation cancelling is nothing special and chances are that you're already doing it when you are using venom arrow.

Wow thanks everyone for the quick responses! :D

OK I now know what to look for timing wise - wait for the light-attack arrow flies off and then do the skill attack.

    Happy Holidays! B)

Can anyone give an explanation in text, not video? I can see it happening in the video and some guy talking about what he did, but what I really need to see is not what is happening on the screen, but what the player is doing at the mouse/keyboard. Specifically, what button presses and when? I have tried Crushing Shock animation canceling on a low level alt. And sometimes I do see a bam-bam-bam and things fire off super fast. But I can never do it with any consistency. And when it does happen, I am never quite sure exactly what I did to make it happen. Because I will think I am doing the exact same thing I just did, but one time it will work but most times it will not. And I will never see "Light Attack" in combat logs. It is always Heavy Attack and Crushing Shock, even when I see it fire off real quick like a machine gun on the screen, it still says Heavy Attack in the logs so I think I am doing something wrong.

Try to cancel normal attack. Hit attack and in next moment block. Try it with fire/ice stuff. You will see if you doing it right.

Next step. Light/heavy attack and any skill in next moment.

    Practice this two first.

General advice: try to hit buttons rapidly.

Isn't this whole animation cancelling thing completly "cheating"..I mean...it was not supposed to be in the game in the first lace?
Why making cool animation if player start to "cancel" them to get higher DPS.
I really hope they will remove this from the game, cause there is no way that I start to do this kind of trick that are anti intuitive and totally un-fun to play "better".

This video is painfully in-depth. Sorry Elloa but I think animation cancelling is here to stay otherwise they wouldn't have changed passives and NB abilities that were nullified because of it.

Yep .I can't argue with it. Agree for 100%! But OP didn't wanted to discuss is it cheating or not (well, I don't know for sure, but I think PP didn't wanted it). OP just want to know how to do it.
