What is it with the Infinite Loading Screens lately?

BOOM!

I'm beginning the battle with Mannimarco on one of my alts; his graphic depiction hasn't even appeared yet. Abnur is teleported away; the first skeleton materializes, the head not even showing yet, and... LOADING SCREEN.

This is, unfortunately, not an uncommon occurrence lately; always at a very inopportune time...

There hasn't been a client-side patch, yet this is occurring much more frequently than it should be, so I presume it has to be something server-side. But there hasn't even been a maintenance standdown on the server, so nothing should have changed there...

CPU is running at 22% for eso.exe and 28% overall, so that's not it; network is at a very small fraction of capacity; memory is sitting at 3.3Gb like it normally is when this game is running, with 1.4+Gb committed to eso.exe. Everything like it usually is...

But BOOM!! Here comes a LOADING SCREEN... thirty minutes and three cups of coffee later, I'm still on a LOADING SCREEN.

Since this is part of the main story arc, I've done this on multiple alts before; I have it down to a science... but I haven't planned for a LOADING SCREEN as part of Mannimarco's attack. Obviously, I need new tactics now; ZOS has decided it was getting too easy for me.

Okay... /vent off...

I'm not experiencing any new load screen issues myself. Every once in a while I get an infinite loading screen when I zone out of a dungeon. I have to tab out and close the game. But I've been having that issue for quite some time, and it's rare.

the loading screen issue started with patch 1.5.2 and continued since. its a pain because its ruins so much and is a constant annoyance.

every single time you go into a loading screen your actually surprised that it ended within 5sec to 1min as you usually get infinite loading screen 50% of the time.

especially in cyrodiil and after being in dungeons/instances the infinite loading screen have a habit of appearing.

I'm having the same problem, and yes, it appears even more often after update 5. I can tell by the sound of my computer when it won't load anymore, it's like the memory gets emptied, and that was it. When the game is running the PC sounds like at the airport, and when it doesn't load anything anymore, it goes back to the normal loudness.
It's not only the loading screens when leaving a dungeon and such, also when I'm just walking around outside I get random loading screens. The latter actually does load and I can continue, but it's annoying either way.

If this was SW-TOR and the Hero engine, I'd say that the loading screens pop up to let the client "catch up"; that's EA/BioWare's explanation of their loading screens... which is reasonable, I guess, except they tie dead reckoning algorithms into the problem for a little extra "spice". If you're on autorun when a SW-TOR loading screen pops up, you'll autorun right off a cliff... or; my favorite, since they don't properly check the z-coordinate when they use dead reckoning; you'll run off some high stairs and continue at the elevation you started... can be fun when the loading screen disappears and you're 100 feet in the air. Luckily, that didn't happen too often (the stairs, not the loading screens; the loading screens happened all the time)...

The fanbois insist ZOS only used the Hero engine for prototyping quests and graphics during development while they were developing their own engine; but there sure seems to be a lot of similarities in performance... especially problematic performance. I wonder if ZOS did the same thing as BioWare and built their engine on top of the Hero engine.

This game has the same lmitations and same core problems: lack of memory management, "phasing", graphical hitching, freezing, random crashes, and the infinite loading screens... and the SW-TOR female characters all have big butts.

I can actually reproduce this phenomenon in Auridon, when I run from wayshrine to crafting area immediately after my character appears on the screen. I assume, the content hasn't been completely loaded into memory.

    Yes.

I assume they're using caching techniques to minimize loading times for graphics when you cross zone/sub-zone boundaries, but caching introduces its own problems. When there is a major change (such as using a wayshrine to move between areas), the engine has to not only load the new vertices, textures, etc. for graphical objects, it also has to clear out the objects already in the cache. Since they're using a disk cache (same as SW-TOR), you can hear the disk thrashing...

    BUT...

It shouldn't lock up the game.

In SW-TOR, you could actually delete the disk cache before playing (the engine simply created a new one) and the game ran much more smoothly for a couple of hours (no need to clear out the cache). I haven't found an identifiable caching file for ESO yet, so it's probably embedded in the other files.

I called it ETERNAL LOADING SCREEN.... And yes, it happens to me ALL DAY, EVERYDAY! It is annoying,... travelling from 1 keep to another by transitus shrine or jump into a dungeon or leaving the dungeons...whether it's pledge dungeons or quest Craglorn dungeon. This is annoying if you are with a group helping in skyshards or dolmens or whatever reasons. I can't imagine how bad it will be if a newbie or new alt running with a pug group for that kind of achievements, no one will wait that long for you except if it's Guild organized runs.

Initially I thought it was the Add ons that causes it, but turning them off didn't improve the speed of loading screen. Fix it please Zenemax...this is getting old!!!!

I get this a lot when leaving the big tree in Elden Root, too. I do Undaunted from Stormhaven, not Grahtwood, but I still see this unexpected loading screen when leaving the big tree. Only seems to happen when leaving via the south arch/exit of the big tree. The other two ways in and out of the big tree are OK.

While I only get that loading screen via the south exit, I get universally bad performance in Elden Root. I avoid that town as much as possible. If
I am in AD, I much prefer making my "home base" Vulkhel Guard or Raw'khel because I can get my vend/bank/repair/decon done so much faster due to the superior game performance compared to Elden Root.

I have tweaked all kinds of graphical settings and they make little difference in Elden Root. FPS just drops to the teens and single digits constantly. I have similar problems in caves in Grahtwood.

There is a cache file. It's mainly geared towards the graphic textures, so I don't know how much it may or may not affect the endless load screen.
Also, on first load after deleting this cache, it takes a bit to load back into the game. They used to suggest deleting this file during beta when the game was being a pain or textures not populating quickly.
Could be a help or not, but something to tinker with.
The file is the ShaderCache.cooked file located in:

No digging required. There is a larger issue. I get the infinite loading screen multiple times per day, every single day. And that used to not be the case.

Thank you. Sincerely. I don't remember this being mentioned in Beta.

I'm going to tinker with it a bit.

    EDIT:
For a cache, it's a surprisingly small file: only 7.82MB; the cache in SW-TOR was force-set to 1GB.

    EDIT#2:
Renamed the original file. The game created a new ShaderCache.cooked file immediately after launch (not at the launcher, but after ESO.exe started up). At that time the file was 533 bytes, so basically nothing more than a file structure with essentially no contents.

On reaching the character-select screen; that is, before a character is even selected such that textures/shaders are even identified for the location where a character is at, the file grew to 7.81MB. This suggests that it certainly isn't a texture file per se (since it would then be a lot larger and wouldn't have loaded textures at that point during execution); I'm guessing it's an indexing file for textures/shaders.

I played for about a half-hour. NO HITCHING. None. Nada. Nil. Zip. Keine. Nitchs. Non. However, I wasn't in one of the large cities like Elden Root and a half-hour of game time isn't enough to cause much in the way of memory fragmentation, so this certainly wasn't a definitive test.

But, again, NO HITCHING at all. Usually the hitching in ESO starts up fairly early in a game session. That being the case, I suggest (but only suggest) the ShaderCache may be related to the graphical hitching problems we've been seeing. That doesn't mean it's related to the loading screen issue, though...

On ending the short play session the file size was back to 7.82MB.

I'll play with it some more this evening, actually go into Elden Root. Wouldn't hurt to have some other folks testing this out, too.

I have to suggest that as they've been updating this game and adding content right and left, it is highly likely that it is outgrowing the original minimum system requirements. I was experiencing these loading screens with increasing frequency and duration until I broke down and bought myself a new MSI GT70 gaming laptop with 24 Gigs RAM, 6 Gigs dedicated Video RAM, 256GIG SSD Boot drive and 1 TB HD. I no longer see ANY random loading screens! Ok, well I think I saw one once for a microsecond but I could have been hallucinating..... So, I suggest a new PC is in order.... o:)

If that's what is needed to play, then they need to hire real coders.

Your comment about changes to the game has merit, though. I would imagine certain areas are not very well optimized for rendering.

My machine is a monster and I still get loading screens. So I kind of doubt this is the issue.

I have mainly noticed these loading screens when in a group with other players, so pretty much whenever I play this game. If you don't group much though, you probably don't deal with this very much.

ESO is a 32-bit application. It can't even address 4GB. So, even if you had 16 TB, it wouldn't affect gameplay. Sorry to pop your bubble.

Hope you got a 64-bit OS or you wasted your money.

The graphic card makes a difference of course, but if we all have to buy a new rig every time a new game comes out, that's the deathknell for that game... and some devs and a whole marketing department needs to be fired.

Interesting, I also has an good system and don't get the random ones, however sometimes the game hang a long time then entering cyrodil on a full server or Elden root in prime time, both is probably server based because of the population. For some reason Raw'kwl don't have loading screen but it takes 2-3 seconds before all loads, longer then I load the game as I tend to quit at the trading post.
