Edit: What will probably happen is that you have to order the Breton statue to get ta code that allows you to order the Elf statue that gives you a code that allows you to order the Nord statue that has the cat pet.

True, but you can't get an NPC to follow you around permanently, like a pet should. And I agree, giving out in-game content at real world events that only very few people can attend is bad marketing indeed.
How about a pet frog? Would make for a good laugh, right? Just like a lot of character names people choose.
