We have fishing. Can we have painting?

I'm not sure how fishing got to be "a thing" in MMOs but I have to admit I think it's pretty cute and I'm glad we have it. And as I keep running across painter's pallets and easels sitting out in the middle of nowhere it occurred to me that it would be incredibly cool to have a painting skill. Initially, of course, your paintings would look like the product of a demented 3 year old but as you put skill points into it you could do better and better. You could then sell your paintings to vendors for gold (price dependent upon your skill level) and every painting you do would automatically go into your screenshots so you could access it later. THEN, when we FINALLY get housing, you can hang your paintings on the walls of your house and/or sell them to other players. C'mon how awesome would it be to commission your character's portrait from a high level crafter/painter??? I mean, c'mon ZoS, if they can do it in The Sims, surely you can do it here?

Yeah, it's fluff and, if ever, wayyyy down the road. But my hope is that some VERY COOL Dev will tuck this away in their awesome ideas folder for future reference.

Is this something you would like?

This would be ground breakingly awesome. @ZOS_GinaBruno

I can't paint in real life, it would be terribly embarassing if my characters were better painters than me.

    Yeah. Same story.

But it could be pretty interesting. We can have some spots to paint (like fishing holes). It could be hard to get there (maybe some mountains or else dangerous place). And it could be more actual with housing.

I'd kind of hate for painting to be chained to specific spots. I'd always be complaining, "But I want to paint that rock outcropping OVER THERE!" LOL

There is subtle beauty to a Modryn Oreyn style painting. If they add this the first painting I will hang is a Modryn Oreyn Replica.

You know, at first I was like, NAH...
But then I was like... Why the F not?
You could make it require canvas and frames created by Woodworkers and Clothiers, and perhaps take a screen shot (some kind of built in UI mechanic) and the time sink would be converting the shot into the painting, maybe using filters to make the image appear as if it was being "painted" onto the canvas during different steps of completion.

So, if you want to make for sale, most players will exploit it to get money (paint nearest merchant and sell this "portrait" to him/her). It would be not so awesome. Maybe something like this: you can draw anywhere, but drawing in right spots will give you more money.

I mean no offense but I seriously doubt that they would even think about that atm(at the moment). Although for you I hope they do. If we was to ever get housing we could paint our own pictures to be hung on the walls. Thumbs_up.gif

Well I think like most things you can sell to merchants, like carapices and the like, it wouldn't actually make you that much even at higher levels. Especially compared to the time you spend actually painting the painting. Lower level paintings, because they suck, will be fast to complete, but something like a "Masterpiece" painting would actually take a fairly serious chunk of time. So you'd still make more money questing for loot than painting.

Actually that's not that far off from how bad I am at drawing, now if the paint was smudged it would be like how I paint.

It could have timer like research, as to not overly exploit.

I can't help but think of the spray can spots in APB. That would of course be vandalism. JS anyone? :P

Sure, but maybe the implementation of this isn't so taxing. And it's not like it's the same guys doing this that has to fix Cyrodiil lag or whatever. I'm guessing.
Not that I'm a huge fan of the specific painting idea I really like the idea of having various crafts that do not influence character strength.

Okay now that I'm done laughing I admit this DOES bring up the question of whether or not specific styles of painting might be involved. I'd say Cubisim and Surrealism are probably right out. But maybe say there's 4 levels of painting. The 1st level would pretty much be stick figures. The 2nd would be a Medieval style, so flat but probably still pretty. For despite the lack of dimension and perspective Medieval art could still be very beautiful. Level 3 would essentially be Renaissance style. Level 4 might then give you the option to use pencil, pastel, watercolor and oil paints for your painting, giving it more diversity. What do you think?

I am not sure if I would ever paint, but it would be cool if we could do something like this.

One thing, the paintings should be like Lithographs so the artists could sell multiple copies. If they wanted to, or they could make it a one copy item.

Then we could have an auction where an NPC with a cultured voice would gently harangue the audience in an attempt to gain more bids for a particular item. Just as long as it is not like those guys at a livestock auction.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Hmmm... not sure how I feel about the "lithograph" idea. The technology just isn't there though I suppose we could say it's accomplished by magic but that just feels a little lame to me. I like the idea of having and/or producing something that is going to be unique. Though I wouldn't mind if you could "keep" your painting while also selling ONE copy of it. That way you could still decorate your own home with your paintings when that becomes and option as well as selling them. And of course anything you paint should be automatically saved as a screen shot for you.

I am just thinking about my total lack of artistic skills. I would be relying on the abilities of others to decorate my house. Otherwise people would say, "Hey, nice painting of a cat" when looking at my painting of a bowl of fruit.
