Stamina build = no CC?

Question for the experts: If you raise max stamina and have relatively low max magica, doesn't that mean your attempts to CC others via spells will become rather futile?

I ask, because if that were the case, if you want to up your melee weapon damage by raising stamina, you'll be doing so at the expense of your ability to keep the opponent within striking distance :/

    From S&B:
Invasion (and morphs)- 3"-4" of Hard CC
Power Bash (and moprhs)- 8"-12" of Hard CC
    Crippling Slash - 2" root

    From 2H:
Stapede - Used to be a root. Now a 60% snare

    From Bow:
    Bombard - 3" root

    From Alliance War - Assault:
Razor Caltrops - Huge area snare

There are plenty of stamina CC options out there.

If you decide to use magicka-based class skills the damage element of the skill (if there is one) will not scale too well but the duration and effectiveness is unchanged

Hmm, it's just that I've found that DK abilities like talons, fossilize, extended chains very rarely work for me in PvP. If not max magica, what does affect their effectiveness?

Nothing affects their effectiveness. But bear in mind:
    - Fossilize can be blocked.
    - Talons has limited range.
    - Chains is generally not working well as a skill since the changes plus it gives your target CC immunity so I'd drop it completely

You'll have to specify what you mean by "they rarely work" before I can help you further. Fossilize and Talons work fine, the latter being the staple CC of DKs.

What did you try that didn't work?

maxing your magica just allows you to use them more. It sounds like your not close enough when trying to apply them or they are roll dodging/breaking free fairly quick.

By not working I mean my character goes through the motions and magica is expended, but there's no visible effect on the target. It's like in PvE where it would say "target is too powerful for this effect". Can players also become "too powerful"?

In the case of Talons if you're too far, the cost will be charged, the animation played but noone will be CC'ed. Also if they have swirly wind around their feet it means they are currently CC immune and any form of CC on them apart from slows won't work.

Fossilize and chains can be blocked, so that's what you're experiencing probably. NPCs rarely block while players rarely let go of block.

    That's Cyrodiil for ya

tnx for the info guys. I stopped using chains and fossilize some time ago because they rarely worked. Now I know why :D. Talons still mystifies me though. I don't try it even unless I'm really close and still....... Must be a l2p issue.

Which is a shame since that was one of the main reasons I had used it in the past. I think they are trying to thin out the skills that immobalize at melee range because they can't figure out how to prevent stunlocks caused by them.

    not really.

CC fails when ur opponent have a strong/various way of breaking out of it. (again, in Alliance War context - i dont know what mechanics PvE has). there are passive traits that give discount for stam cost for breaking out of root, or incentives for dodging/rolling out of CC...
    -
thus, AFAIK, ur success with CC depends not on your own stat, but your target's.

for example, if your target does not resist to a CC, then the skill is designed to be 100% successful.

...thankfully they made Rally a pretty good skill to compensate.
