Why don't they cost stamina or magicka?

You wan't people to just sit and stare at each other when they run out of either?

Why is running, as opposed to sprinting, free?

The designers chose certain baseline actions as free to encourage their usage. Heavy attacks aren't really free, either. They take time to use. Of course now they can also regenerate stamina/magicka so in some sense they're cheaper than free.

It just seems odd that we can deplete our stamina and not be able to do any more weapon attacks, but we can still do light and heavy attacks at no cost.

I think at least heavy attacks should consume a bit of stamina, especially given the benefits they provide.

I personally use light and heavy attacks almost never. Except of course on my restro staff wielding healers.

Because this game is trying to be like an MMO, where "basic" attacks are always free, and not like TES.

Then you're doing it wrong. Interweaving light attacks improves your DPS, and, amusingly, heavy attacks actually restore stamina.

You're thinking of it in context to the other Elder Scrolls games. In those games stamina is used to pay for all non-magical attacks. But it isn't used for much else. Sprinting, jumping (in Oblivion and Morrowind), Running (again, in Oblivion and Morrowind), attacking, dodge rolling (in Oblivion and Skyrim), and a few other special moves all chew up Stamina.

But, there are no stamina versions of spells. I mean you have stuff like the bow time slowdown in Skyrim, or the dodge roll in Oblivion and Skyrim... but that's as close to special moves as you get.

In ESO the weapon skills operate in a similar way to spells in another Elder Scrolls game. In that context, if attacks cost stamina, you'd see one of two things. Players would push harder towards magicka builds (because you can't even attack with your weapon if you're running around) and staffs do allow players an alternative option that doesn't involve stamina. Or you'd see players ditching the weapon and fighters guild skills wholesale, because again, no stamina to pay for them.

It's an "adrenaline surge"... or somethin'.

Cause unlike F2P games they don't have to charge you to use attacks.
