Paul Sage on Vampirism Appearance

Paul Sage actually answered one of my questions during the live stream. My question was:
Will you make available the ability to "hide" one's vampirism so that a vampire may look like they did BEFORE becoming vampires either through the use of a potion, an item, or a new skill?

This is at about 1:14:44 of the livestream.

Sage's answer is, "I don't know that we're ever going to offer that except through maybe disguises or costumes. But maybe disguises or costumes are the way to go. Part of the reason that is so people can tell who vampires are on the battlefield and, you know, so the populace can tell who the vampire is. So..." and he trails off and ends there.

First of all, I have yet to figure out why it's "important" for every single player in the game to be able to tell which players are vampires when not a single flaming NPC INCLUDING other vampires has even the vaguest clue that your character is a vampire. I really don't understand why this is important even in PvP. The abilities you use will give you away but it's no more "important" to be able to "see" a vampire than it is to be able to "see" a templar. Templars may wear heavy or light armor and use a variety of weapons or staves. When do you know they are a templar? When you see that freakin' Aedric spear for one. And I don't think you SHOULD know until then. Wasn't the WHOLE POINT of individual builds and the ability to use any armor and weapon precisely so people would not be automatically pigeonholed into the obvious tropes and stereotypes of their class? So yeah, I would REALLY like an answer to THAT.

I am also extremely disappointed that there are NO PLANS to allow this at present time and that if it EVER happens it's going to be through some nebulous "costume or disguise." If they DO offer this in this manner that will preclude your vampire from wearing a tabbard or a costume or disguise, which will really be a drag as more of these items become available and players enjoy being able to use them. Even if for whatever ridiculous reason you feel feel vampires NEED to be highly visible in PvP, Sage you've already ensured THAT with the last update by making us light up like freaking Roman Candles! So IF you ever decide to give a moment's thought to your large base of vampire players who REALLY WANT this ability and have been begging for it ever since we first saw how HIDEOUS Stages 3 and 4 are PLEASE RECONSIDER doing it via the costume/disguise route. PLEASE make it a slottable item on the potions ring as several other trophies/trinkets already are.
Please ALSO consider offering one that allows you to maintain the appearance of Stage 1 and possibly Stage 2 and even 3. Different people have preferences for these different looks and would really like to be able to maintain them. Remember also that this is a cosmetics issue and not a mechanics issue, mechanically the stages would progress as normal. Doing this as a slottable item will keep people from using it in Cyrodil because they'll want to have their heal, magicka or stam potion in that position and, of course, I don't see this item being something that could keep us from becoming blindingly obvious to those with the ability to see us clearly in PvP thanks to the recent changes anyway.

And please, I'm begging you, PAY ATTENTION and start ACTUALLY THINKING about doing it SOONER rather than later. Thank you. Frankly, I was really surprised and disappointed that you seemed completely clueless about the fact that this has been something a large portion of players have desired for a very long time as it is constantly cropping up as a hot topic on the forums. Who's responsible for getting that kind of information to you again????

Morna, Your Extremely Unhappy Player

What happens with a stage 4 vampire enforcer? lol...
Force weapon swap to have priority over EVERYTHING. Close enough.
Make stamina builds even with magicka builds.
    Disable abilities while holding block.
Give us a REASON to do dungeons more than once.
Remove PVP AoE CAP. It is ruining Cyrodiil.
Fix/Remove Forward Camps. They are ruining Cyrodiil.
Impenetrability needs to REDUCE CRIT DAMAGE. Not negate entire builds.

That could get interesting considering that NPC's are going to start reacting to Werewolves and Vampires.

First of all, Morna, you're famous! LOL!

I completely agree. I don't PVP at this point, but I see what you're saying about opponents not knowing what someone's class is until they start to fight. It makes sense that they not know about their vampirism either.

But even PVP notwithstanding, if vampires can be attacked or arrested on sight after the justice system is put in place, that can cause serious issues. Being an RPer, I most often roleplay in town. These RP sessions tend to go on for at least a couple of hours, and even if we feed right beforehand, we get into a good event and next thing you know, we're in Stage Three or Four. We may not be able to get out of town in time to feed before the guards come chasing after us.

The only downside to the vampire "look" is that there was no real source of screenies or other images at the time I created my characters.

So when I made my chars I intended to be vampires, I didnt know how theyd look after the change.

My bosmer nightblade looks fine, that came out well... my breton sorc on the other hand looks like she is just sick.

I dont think we need a way to mask our paleness or eyes, what we need is an ability to change up hairstyle or some other cosmetic changes so the look can match the face more properly.

I put off becoming a vamp until they changed Night's Silence. I've never been a vamp in any other TES game solely because I didn't want my character to be ugly, but in this game the benefits outweigh the cost, and she's dressed as a penguin right now anyway, so you can't really tell.

That being said, I think it makes sense for vamps to stand out so much. It's part of the mythology of vampires. It is part of the predator/prey relationship. If a deer sees a tiger, it knows it's in danger. That is why the tiger hunts in stealth. It makes sense that the same would be true for vampires.

Yes. The PROBLEM is that ZoS has implemented an entirely illogical "feeding" schedule that would actually cause you to have to feed your vampire around 12 times a 6 hour Tamriel "day" which is just flatly ridiculous from several vantage points. Further, at present time, there is absolutely no disadvantage to "starving" your vampire, making the stages meaningless from a mechanics standpoint. Don't believe me? Go to Cyrodil some time and I challenge you to find ONE vampire (who isn't me) that ISN'T in Stage 4. Who the hades with the exception of BIRDS eats in excess of a dozen times a day? Just...NO. They need to fix that. Big time.

Well, if being stage 4 in town causes trouble for the vamp, it'll actually give them a reason to do the feeding thing. I haven't played a vamp yet, so I don't know about how often you'd have to feed, but maybe that should be addressed as well.

He didn't explicitly state that it would cause trouble. He just said that it will be reacted too now. That could be as little as guards saying "Filthy Vamp" when you pass by or get caught stealing something, or it could actually cause you real trouble like being attacked.

Every time I see a vampire thread, I really want to send them some money so they can buy a clue. They never seem to understand this is a multi-player game, and the choices a player makes should not make them any kind of supreme entity in the game.

+ Vamp Player: Vampires are mystical all powerful creatures, that is what I wanted to play
    - Common Sense: It's a multiplayer game, you can't be more powerful than other people because of a role playing choice.
+ Vamp Player: Well, if you want to be super powerful too, just become a vampire yourself
    - Common Sense: This isn't the world of darkness, not everyone wants to be a vampire. This isn't a vampire based game, vampires are a small aspect of it.
+ Vamp Player: Well, my vampire shouldn't look like a vampire, he's a super cool vampire that's also a hero and volunteers at children's hospitals.
    - Common Sense: Would you play an Argonian that didn't look like an Argonian? How about a Khajiit that doesn't look like a Khajiit?
+ Vamp Player: I want to hide my vampirism, it's not fair that other players know I'm a vampire
    - Common sense: They use in game mechanics to make it obvious you're a vampire because in every other vampire lore, IT'S OBVIOUS YOU'RE A VAMPIRE.
+ Vamp Player: My vampire has vulnerabilities, he's supposed to be an unstoppable creature of the night
    - Common Sense: This isn't a sandboxed game, you can't just pop open the console and type "player.godmode = 1"

Until Vampires are completely unable to walk in the daylight in this game, they have no room to complain about anything, because you're getting something for nothing based upon some Marilyn Manson esque fetish.

So where does that line of thinking relate to werewolves then? They don't look any different at all from any other players until such time as they cast a skill and morph, right? Am I missing anything about them? I don't see too many... but if Sage is going to apply this line of thinking, it seems he should then extend it to our furry friends... mind you, I am neither vamp or werewolf, lol - just seems an odd thing to hang his logic on when there is an entire other "race" of creatures that do not suffer from this cosmetic problem...

@MornaBaine‌ I usually agree with you about most things Vampire. I just don't see this as a priority. BTW, congrats on getting your question recognized and answered!

Not saying I'd complain if they did this. I'd enjoy it, and RP the hell out of it, if stage 1 kept its short cylce and made us look fully mortal, but after that it's all down hill appearance-wise, with a much longer timeline to stage 4. Just don't see it as that important.

But I will be thrilled if Paul Sage is being his taciturn self and not giving to much away, and I'm not reading to much into what was said. It sounds like we will run afowl of the justice system if we are stage 4 in town. Awesome!

Meh, I'd be satisfied if stages 1 and 2 looked normal, while stages 3 and 4 would begin to reveal the character's altered nature.

I'd also be content if ZOE added "daywalker facepaint\Gemstone of Mortal Image" cosmetics\costume slot item, just to revert your face to normal.

The fact that you don't get recognized as a vampire by NPCs, even at stage 4 bugs me, as well, but I suppose that's just because they didn't have enough time during development stages.

This is exactly how the issue was solved for my character. Got tired of my Bosmer looking ugly and strung out, so got cured.

Have no issues with vampires looking like vampires; prefer it in the present format.

In PvP, my Srendarr add on tracks vampires for me. Find it to be a good thing that vampires are identifiable in PvP without it though; it works well with the whole immersive UI that ZOS endeavours to uphold.

Ought to be considered a cheat. Actually IS a cheat weather you like it or not. You should have to get close enough to see pale skin/red eyes, wait to see vampire abilities used, or slot that fighter's guild ability that highlights undead to identify us as targets.

You should have to risk something/slot something to be able to tell at a glance. Having 3rd party Addons do that for you is cheap.

My question got asked too! I asked if Vampires and Werewolves would be getting any new abilities that could be considered fun? As in not attacks, or active skills.

Buuuuuuut they cleverly did not answer it by pointing out all the new abilities werewolves are getting in Update 5.

They're experts are making it look like they're answering questions but they're really just covering their own [snip].

But here's my opinion on how the Stages should work:

Stage 1: Your toon looks exactly like they did before they turned, maybe a lightening of the eye color or whatnot.

Stage 2 would be the current stage 1. Current appearance of Stage 2 as it exists now would be done away with entirely.

Stage 3 appears as it does now

Stage 4 appears as it does now.

    So you go from:
Stage 1: Normal looking with oddly-colored eyes possibly

Stage 2: Sickly looking but relatively normal

Stage 3: You look like a corpse with bloodshot eyes.

Stage 4: Straight-up Nosferatu paper white skin, blue veins glowing eyes.

I like how you contradict yourself in your own post. That's impressive.

Something for nothing? Sure we get a cheap Ultimate that is the most effective Ultimate in the game, but that's being addressed. Check that off the list.

Vampires take 50% more damage to fire. Which in case you haven't noticed, is EVERYWHERE. PvE PvP you name it, it's got FIRE.

Let me break that down even more. Say for instance you're a vampire (let's pretend) and you get hit with a fire attack. Your spell resistance and armor mitigates NONE of the damage. You will take 150% damage of that attack.

Vampires also take a MASSIVE hit to their Health Recovery. MASSIVE. And it gets progressively larger as a vampire moves through the stages of hunger.

Now, people say "Vamp r 2 OP nurf nurf" because as the game currently stands, there is a HORRENDOUS imbalance between magicka damage and stamina damage, making stamina builds nearly useless.

There's also a MONUMENTAL PROBLEM with the broken amounts of Ultimate Generation some classes and builds can attain, making the abuse of the vampire ultimate morph Devouring Swarm possible.

But you don't hear people say "Ultimate Gain r 2 op NERF NERF" No no, you hear them going after the incorrect common denominator.

But it's okay, because according to the Guild Summit notes, broken-ass Ultimate Gain is being addressed.
Changes to Ultimate abilities and the way that Ultimate generation works are also coming soon to reconcile the difference between fast-ticking DoT stacking builds and slow attacking tanks to even out the rate at which different build types generate Ultimate resource.
    • Reduce variation in Ultimate generation between builds
    • Ultimates will scale off your highest stat and critical strike chance

Am I really the only one who still thinks the vampires should be even more nasty looking?

With that said though, I can fully understand the OP since I too have several friends who likes the more normal mortal looking vampires. They do excist in ES lore in the forms of various different bloodlines, just not one we have available in the actual game.

Some vanity item of a sort which would give the vampire their normal mortal appearance isn't too much to ask for though, since it would just prevent one from wearing other disguises or tabards for the matter.
