AVG - false Trojan

So, heads-up, AVG is marking ESO.EXE as a trojan again after this update. Obviously I clicked 'do nothing', but it won't let me access the file. Anyone know how to report a false positive?

Solution to let it through btw: Find the icon on your taskbar (bottom-right of the screen; you may need to click the arrow). On the home page, click 'computer' (top-left). Click on settings, then 'Exceptions' in the list on the left. 'Add exception' (folder), and browse for the 'Zenimax Online' folder in 'Program Files'. Job done.

    Thanks for this, Mr Feathers.

Good old AVG, the only antivirus program that needs an exception list longer than its definition list :)

Download Avast, disconnect from internet, uninstall AVG, install Avast.

Just as free, way more reliable, hardly any false positives, ability to submit any file to them for review.

I used Avast until it constantly started sending me popups wanting me to purchase their product. I couldn't figure out how to get rid of the popups without having to buy the product. After being repeatedly kicked out of games because of their popups, I finally uninstalled Avast. And this was with the free version, not a trial.

    No free Antivirus is perfect.

After this, I'm struggling to argue. The only reason I avoided Avast for this PC was because, on the last one, I'd be watching a movie late at night and out of nowhere at full volume a robotic voice announced "virus database has been upgraded". Jumped so hard I left a hole in the ceiling. I'm sure that can easily be turned off though.

@Tabbycat, if you register the free product (give you about 30 days initially, I believe), they leave you alone for better than a year before requiring reregistration. One email reg works for all your personal machines, and they don't spam you to death, either.

Also, right click and there is a Silent/Gaming Mode to prevent the pop-ups.

You can equally limit notifications / system scan times.

Coupled with Comodo firewall (free also), I've yet to have anything sneak past. Comodo takes a bit more to set up, but also has gaming mode.

Both of these are able to be free because they are funded by the Corporate versions, not tons of pop-ups or offers.

No product is perfect, but I've found this one to be the least obnoxious and the most effective. If you want to get harassed regularly, give Norton a try. (They're the telemarketers of antivirus sales pitches)

@MorHawk , laughing a little bit because I am painfully aware of this occurring. Tends to make you pee a little.

There is a setting that disables voice notification for updates and virus alerts. You can also limit updates to times chosen by you.

AVG wasn't bad, but I've had things slip past it that Avast has caught without fail.

More than happy to assist in install/setup for anyone that needs it.

In fairness though, they need it. Their product's so thoroughly terrible that they'd never get any sales if they weren't pushy.

I have never known any other antivirus software that has not only hogged system resources, but has actively broken features that were working before. My father-in-law had it on his laptop, and I had to disable their email scanning as it was blocking any messages from being sent. Happy endings though, finally managed to persuade him to cancel his sub.

Isn't Panda (free) supposed to be better than both AVG and Avast right now? I haven't looked into it but I keep getting told by others that I should switch to that one.

That's because they have so many OEM contracts it's not funny, and many people don't realize that free yet functional alternatives are available.

Consider Avast free with the setting adjustments indicated above. You might also do a Custom Install and disable the other helpful features they will autoadd otherwise. The AV is all you need and it works quite well when it's not scaring the crap out you.

The cloud thing is a novelty, and it has scored *very* highly on AV-Comparatives's real-world protection tests, consistently beating out not only AVG and Avast, but often taking the top spot. Certainly worth a look. The Windows 8-style interface does put me off though, and you want to watch out when installing, as it'll try to push through the kind of browser hijack you'd expect from malware (changes your home screen, search engine etc)
