Is Cadwell all he seems?

First of all I am only VR6 so if there is some amazing revelation when you hit VR10 about Cadwell then I don't know about it yet.

I just had this thought over the weekend that maybe he is some servant of Sheogorath or maybe his little brother or maybe even Sheo himself in disguise or something. They do both have a beard ......

The rewards you get at VR1 and 6 are a Golden Saint costume and a Dark Seducer costume - Sheo's minions.

It would make sense that this whole twisted business of everyone chasing round after an amulet would be something the old mad cheese himself would find amusing.

And Cadwell does have a pan on his head ... just saying.

Thoughts anyone? Or am I going to get wabbajacked just for mentioning this?

His is a soul shriven. BUT! He is the oldest soul shriven and nobody actually been there before Cadwell. So, noone can prove, that he is really soul shriven.
BTW then you get Mannimarco's Costume (VR10). Your theory is good, but not perfect.

My personal belief always was that he is something similar to the player character in nature, although they don't specifially spell it out anywhere.

There is a book ingame that tells us about some scholarly theory that (I don't remember it exactly) "In times of great danger, nirn itself creates soul shriven with special properties" as a kind of "antibodies" against imminent threats. This suggests that if we were created in response to the planemeld, maybe Cadwell was created earlier in response to some other crisis and either already fulfilled his purpose (or failed at it) and kinda went haywire afterwards, until we reactivated him.

That would also explain nicely why he would be generally inclined to help us save the world and everything, despite his apparent weirdness.

Or maybe he's just a purely comic relief character and is generally designed to make John Cleese say funny things, which is equally possible I guess. I prefer the first theory though. =)

I kind of figured he was just completely tapped into cold harbour... though, it would make sense if he was a chosen of Sheogorath the way most protagonists in Elder Scrolls games are sometimes a chosen of Azura or another Daedric Prince.

It was the costumes that trigged off this line of thought. Of all the costumes they could have chosen to give us why both Golden Saint and Dark Seducer as a reward for Cadwell's Journal? Just coincidence that Cadwell is handing out these disguises or more than that?

Are those actually tied to the Cadwell progression? I thought they were just VR progression pieces... though, it would make sense, at least in the future, if they move those over to quest rewards, after the champion system hits.

This happens only after besting Molag Bal. Before that i think he just served Coldharbour in general. :p

He certainly loves the place and still misses it after ending up in The Harborage. :p

I always got the impression that defeating Molag Bal just inspires him to reveal his true nature. I never felt like he changed as a result of the conflict, at least not based on the dialogue he has post-fight.

And do you guys realize how healthy he is ? Look at other poor souls in Coldharbour, if they havent turned feral, they're weak and soulless (both literally and not  ) and Cadwell is full of energy, running around like 18yo and always cheerful.... Like the cold of Coldharbour doesn't affect him at all...

I always envisioned Cadwell as being a Sheogorath worshipper before he turned into a soul shriven. How else can you explain his quirks? Or maybe the torture of coldharbor got to him. But then, that would hardly explain how the others are like zombies...

But I digress. Cadwell is Cadwell. I try not to think on it too much.

I always thought he was one of the rival gods of Molag Bal, in disguise trying to undermine his plans and manipulating you as a pawn to bring Molag down.

Haven't finished the VR stuff yet but from reading here looks like his true identity is not revealed?

I've toyed with the notion that he might be Akatosh or another divine trying to influence events against Molag Bal, similar to the role that Meridia played. Though I doubt it is Uncle Sheo, as interesting as that might be.

He kind of reminded me of Fizban from the original Dragonlance trilogy of books, hence the idea he might be a divine.

They should've made it so that Cadwell reveals himself to be Sheogorath at the end of the Cadwell's gold. Would've made sense because anyone who made it through all the quests must be insane already!

Too helpful and non-self serving to be Uncle Sheo.

Love him to death, certainly my most favorite eccentric Daedric Prince, but he had greater interest in amusing himself.

Not to say that he wouldn't offer a slant to an event to keep Molag from eliminating his source of amusement, but he'd still twist it along the way.

Cadwell is an enigma, and likely always will be.

I doubt Cadwell even fully knows who Cadwell is or how he does what he does.

He just is, and he just does. May as well ask a butterfly how it's a butterfly.

His mustache and beard are similar to Sheo, albeit the beard's a bit longer. He has a similar randomness to Sheo as well. I doubt it is actual Sheo in disguise, but it does make me wonder if it is maybe Jyggalag when Sheo is the up front personality. Then when they switch, Sheo is trapped in Coldharbor. Rather than both living in the same body.

Jyggalag represents logical order and deduction, but if corrupted by Coldharbor or in a withered weakened state this might very a bit. Despite Cadwell's "craziness" he does always seem to pick up on what's going on very quickly and has a quick order plan to get through it.

Again this theory depends heavily on Sheo and Jyggalag not sharing a body, but rather switching positions and one withering while the other is in power.
And so did many brave men, women, and beast fall to the end of Beta, never to be heard from again. All that is left, is whispers of the adventures they had.

I don't want him to be connected to Sheo simply because Sheo already gets more than enough attention. A few other Daedric Princes are underappreciated and rarely appear anywhere, let's do something about them instead. Incidentally, Meridia used to be one of those we knew relatively little about, so I was glad to see more of her in ESO.

First, it makes no sense that the other gods would roll over and let Malag Bal take Nirn without resistance.

So I expect that our characters are surrounded by, or at least very frequently in contact with, agents of the other gods.

Sheogorath/Caldwell appeals because, well madness is Sheograths method
    .
But I would contend that every spy or agent has his "Schtick" or act he hides behind. Is Caldwell an agent for Sheogorath, or Meridia, or is it just his schick?

Likewise I suspect Damien, that knight in the Covenent with the "ladies man" schtick, that keeps showing up. He seems awlfully survivable for an NPC no?

And what about Mr. Cool Razum Dar? Who's he for really?

Not to mention that it appears to me the whole point of Caldwells silver and gold is to teach you who the real enemy is.

There are not so subtle hints that gods/daedric princes are all around constantly interacting with your character.

You'll have to forgive I haven't done much of Daggerfall.

In AD You have the Wilderking/queen which is an embodiment of Valenwood. You speak with Azura and do some stuff. Sheo makes an actual appearance outside of the mage guild quests. (and more)

In EP you deal closely with Alexmancia the the tribunal. There's a quest to work with the three "primal gods" the bear, fox, and wolf to save someone poisoned with Daedric poison. Depending on what you consider the Hist, you work with embodiments of it. On one quest in Stormhaven I even spoke with an aspect of Sithis (a red ghostly snake, not the one around Mornhould) who spoke with my character briefly.

You work with Lyranth in Stormhaven, a mysterious Dremora who acts very different from almost all other Daedra or Dremora, making deals/helping more inline with how the darker gods/princes make deals. She also helps you in Coldharbor in any campaign. She's one of those who appears at just the right time to help. She also alludes to being very powerful and very old.

At one point, can't remember which campaign, you help Hermaeus Mora.

    The list goes on.
And so did many brave men, women, and beast fall to the end of Beta, never to be heard from again. All that is left, is whispers of the adventures they had.
