EU Server Lag/Latency/Responsiveness - What's your Situation?

Rodario

A post I recently read has reminded me of the EU server's lag situation and how we've heard very little in terms of official statements.

Let's see how many people are affected.

Please only vote if you play on the EU server AND live in Europe.

When reading "lag issues" also think of unresponsiveness.

There was some minor animation lag before migration but no server lag (for me) now animation lag is worse since server lags is added on top of it...

I wish thed just merge EU and NA, maybe the game would feel really alive with both playerbases.

I can't vote since I'm on the NA server (although I live in the EU^^), but I am having these problems, too. Especially in Cyrodiil, but sometimes also outside in the "normal" zones.

It happens that the game just logs me out (when I'm in Cyrodiil) without an error, just like as if I've done it myself. One time I couldn't leave a dungeon anymore since the game didn't recognize my character still being in Cyrodiil.
Or it lags so much (in battles only) that I need about 10 seconds to cast a spell (if it's possible at all), although my PC meets the requirements. So I get killed over and over again since I cannot defend myself in anyway. Quite frankly, it pisses me off.

Out of Cyrodiil, it happens sometimes that "I'm kind of" still in the game but I'm not anymore. I can move around, but I cannot "do" anything anymore, not even my Daedras follow anymore since they still "see" me where I was before the game slowed down my internet connection to below DSL (I usually have 16MBit, goes down to 1 or below).
The support doesn't seem to be able to help me there (but they tried hard, I have to say); in August I've had this problem constantly for weeks, then it went back to normal out of nowhere, and a few days ago it started again. It is NOT a provider/router issue, everything else I do in the internet works just fine. The speed also goes back to normal as soon as I quit the game. I've done ALL the troubleshooting there is, it doesn't seem there's a solution or an explanation for that.

I had some minor lags just.before transfer but nothing constant since then. I get an occasional few seconds of lags but it can also be my connection. Since those doesn't last, I dont mind.

Lags in Cyrodiil, unresponsiveness in all zones.

These are two separate issues and should be treated as such.

I had no problems before the migration, and things are mostly fine now. I get the occasional session where there's a bit of unresponsiveness, but re-logging usually fixes it.

I've probably only had 3 or 4 such sessions, and I think they were all after the migration. I don't do PvP or groups/trials etc so my experience is largely solo PvE plus some cooperative PvE.

What's new since the migration is the "server lag" ("lag" is probably not an accurate term), where you can still move but everything freezes, you can't use skills or talk to npc,... and you're kicked from the the server with an error 318 if you press too many keys during the freeze. The duration can be up to 30 seconds.

    Danger Will Robinson!

I'm not even sure where to begin with whats wrong with that suggestion. However my experience has been pretty good; any issues I've had have related to the actual client which have been addressed with patches.

I noticed no difference after the migration, good or bad. But performance in Cyrodil since update 4 is awful.

Didn't really play before this transfer was done, but I don't recall having latency issues during the open betas, especially the second one.

And yes, the unresponsiveness is basically a separate issue, seemingly a design problem of some sort.

Lag was better in when servers were in NA.

The game it self was none responsive, but that wasnt lag.

Now game is fixed, but game lags in all zones.

EDIT: Also clicked on wrong option :open_mouth:

    ^^ Exactly this.
IIRC, however, it started with patch 1.3 ... I don't believe the server migration to have in itself affected my gameplay.
Opinions are like buttholes : Everybody has one, and they usually stink.

    3 things to reduce stamina/magicka imbalance :
    - Use magicka to block abilities costing magicka, instead of stamina.
    - Add % damage reduction to heavy armor.
    - Add block penetration to 2H.

I had lag issues before the migration and I still have them
I had annoying but somewhat bearable ability delays before the move, and some occasional problems that were traced to network packet loss. Now I have a more or less constant unresponsiveness, wildly varying and unpredictable ability delays, and lag spikes with what looks like 100% packet loss that can last for anything from a couple of seconds to 30 seconds. When I sprint or ride, I frequently get rubberbanded back between 10 and 50 meters at random. Sometimes this happens with a loading screen, but mostly I'm just zapped back.

During the longer dropouts, the server seems to stop dead in its tracks. Everyone in the zone is affected, and after the lag spike everything resumes as if nothing happened.

This is in PvE. I have not bothered with PvP for quite a while, but judging from the complaints and cursing in guild chat, things are pretty bad in Cyrodiil.

I can't vote, being in AU however I share these issues when playing on the EU server. I use both servers and there are definite connection issues with EU. If I lived in EU I'd have a purple response.

i have been running pingplotter this morning and i get up to 50% packet loss at 4.68.62.237 (lag-10.ear1.frankfurt.level3.net). its a few hops before i reach the EU Servers.
might be worse in the evening, i´ll try to check after work.

By now, I'm pretty sure it's worst during primetime, meaning server load definitely has something to do with it. Can't be the only reason though, as I also get these issues randomly every time of day. Sometimes the overworld is fine and a delve laggy as hell, sometimes the other way around.

Just replied to CS that I've already proved that their open this open that etc. doesnt work, but the 'bot wants me to do this again

Would love to not get 'invalid location', 'cannot mount here', 'you are swimming' messages when they clearly are not the case...
Or is this how the Frankfurt servers look

In PvE I have not noticed alot of difference except in rivenspire, that zone gets hit by lag spikes so bad its like a natural disaster hits the zone frequently..

I cannot speak on cyrodiil as I did not do alot of pvp before the migration but at the mo on thornblade at primetime it is unplayable.

Lag before but that was lag, what I have now is like lag but also far more random - lag, client/server breaks, teleports back in time & space and game freeze leading to 318s as I try to interact with the frozen game and then my backed up presses all hit the server at once.

They have a serious fault somewhere in their set up, I do not think that this is mainly a code problem this is something in the connectivity from us to the new DC.

I think this poll's results paint a very clear picture of the lag situation on the EU server. Yes, to be representative and accurate, way more votes would be needed, but whether 60% of players have lag issues or 20%, it's too much anyway. Two things are needed from ZOS at this point, in my opinion:

    1. CS needs to stop telling people it's their ISP that's causing problems.

    2. An official statement needs to be made. Acknowledge the problem and tell us you're working on it. If at all possible, tell us you're testing solutions and give us a ballpark ETA.

I believe we are past acting like there is no problem. The affected players' mood is not going to get better by continuing this wall of silence.

@ZOS_GinaBruno‌ @ZOS_JessicaFolsom‌ @ZOS_MichelleA‌ I know this is not your decision and I don't think anyone is blaming you guys, but we really need some communication here. Please apply some pressure upstairs.

As I remember there was a massive thread on how much lag and issues there were for the Euro players, and how migrating the server to Europe was going to fix everything.

Maybe the issue isn't the server location, as I play from NZ and somehow don't lag, maybe the problem is Europe.
