The red glow? Not sure.

The yellow symbol in front of the shield is just showing you that they are blocking.

The red glow is just indicating it's an enemy.

I think it's supposed to show some kind of shield buff, and they are blocking too so you see the shield up. If they didn't use the shield I'd bet you'd still see the buff.
