It's also the newest title so people are excited to sport it.

Sadly, even the August Palatine rank doesn't mean anything either. Just more time spent zerging.

I only just started realizing this from seeing it on high rank players on my own side.
So many time I'd focus on the volunteers and recruits. I wondered why i kept getting my ass handed to me.

It's all about knowing your rank insignia. From Legionary up to first Sargeant you got chevrons, squares from Lieutenant to Centurion, Colonel is <> and then you get Crescents from Tribune up.
But even more than that, the names. I don't claim to know everyone, but I recognise most good players by name.mike.gaziotisb16_ESO wrote: »LonePirate wrote: »It seems like every fifth or sixth player in Cyrodiil now sports the Dragonstar Arena Champion title. Yeah there's an element of truth to that, for sure.
However time spent zerging is still time spent PvPing. Those Palatines might not be the best duellists or 1vX players necessarily, but they've been PvPing since day 1 and they know their PvP inside-out. They're no scrubs. Also if you attack them, you might get run over by their train which is stealthing just around the corner :P
I approach any high-ranked player with a bit more caution then I do with volunteers, tyros and corporals. Which of course makes things interesting if it's actually a good player playing an alt :P

"Time spent" does not equate to anything revolving around skill or competence. A monkey can put immoveable and pulsar or batswarm on their bar and be a contributor in PvP in it's current state. One would think that practice (Time spent) would yield skill in pvp but it simply doesn't when the majority run around zerging. Stay on the crown and press buttons 1-5. They are great at pressing those buttons and following the leader though but humans learn that as early as Kindergarten.
Kill Counter is a fantastic add-on to put actual skill vs experience vs title into perspective. Especially if you do solo or small group pvp. The kill stat sheet is awesome for that add-on.
Quality practice (eh, semi) and knowledge equate to skill in this game. Following the crown and spamming whatever aoe does not. That's my opinion at least. I'm ok if someone cares to disagree but I stand firmly in that.
lol @ people thinking PvP rank actually means anything related to skill.
All PvP rank means is "that person got a lot of defense ticks"
Literally all it means.
Also keep in mind that pretty much anyone with a PvP rank of 30+ is more likely than not to be a solo toon player. They dont play alts like others do. For all you know that rank 14 person might actually have say, five alts with rank 14+ (which would put them very close to that rank 30 player had it been all on one toon)

I know it is, because I am the alt person I was making an example of17, 16, 16, 14, 10, and it combines out for about 9 million accumulated AP, wherever that puts me had I been playing one toon all this time, I dont know, but I know it is higher than Centurion.

Yes, this convo was had. Regardless, I don't build for small open field skirmishes, but for large zergs/keep battles. And we build for small battles and ganks, with the caveat that most of us are competent large group builds with a couple gear/skill swaps.
Then again youre a shield stacking templar, I am a DPS dragonknight, so if you were to actually lose against me heads up, id question your build tbh, im pretty squishy as far as DKs go.
