Hello! I am quite new to ESO (only level 25) or so, but I wanted to post my first impressions in case anyone else was in the same situation I was in, looking for a new home after getting a nice computer capable of playing newer games. After getting my new rig all of a sudden every previously closed door (every single game out) I was never able to play became open to me, and I jumped in headfirst. I tried everything, in fact right now I still have, including ESO, 5 active subscriptions and thats not even counting the free to plays. Each has something to offer, some less than others...I dont want to name specific titles here but they all fell short for me after a few days.
Either due to performance issues due to hardware conflictions (A certain Sci Fi raid-intensive newer title), or complete lack of substance glaring in the face of its stunning visuals (A certain exiled realm of ab-something), or no end game whatsoever (a certain second iteration of a 5 or so expansion pack toting older title), or...etc, I could not become immersed in their worlds. ESO saved the day here, and not just because its Elder Scrolls (although i am a huge fan of Morrowind/Skyrim). My reasoning is as follows:
To start, It runs like butter, especially when encountering stunning scenes such as absorbing a Skyshard with the sun at just the right spot to send light rays shimmering down through the trees and reflecting off of a river bubbling by your feet. Then there's crafting...a real crafting system. Part of a larger 'Level by using it' skill system. Well thought out and well put together quests, all voice acted! I was playing yesterday and realized that I actually cared about this guy, his wife was corrupting him to the point he didn't even care about his dad anymore. His poor dad! I stopped and realized that I typically don't even READ quest text, my mind automatically knows its hunt this or collect these or visit this guy, and I look for my mini-map arrow and fly on. Not with ESO. Now if that's your thing, you can probably manage, dont think you HAVE to get into all the lore. The fact that it's there if you want it is what I needed.
Even better, is that if you read up on future goals for the development team, they actually have some pretty awesome stuff on the way. I originally put trying ESO off due to reading some things on the forums, and it's for that reason i'm posting this rather long unfocused summary of my own first impression, because I wasted a whole bunch of time due to some doomsayers whining over nothing (lesson learned). In fact, I would probably never have tried it if I didn't notice that every single other game has the same doomsayers saying the same rediculousness on their own respective forums. I wish I could say there was a free trial, but since there is not, I hope this can sway someone who's on the edge like I was. It's worth it, I promise.
