Is it possible to make the mail get to you instantly without having to constantly log on and off or zone to get it?

I like how a friend can send me mail to make him something I get it. But whoops, he forgot 1 item. Now I have to log out and back in to get that mail.
I did not think it was that difficult to set up an electronic email system to work right. Apparently I was wrong.1
