How do Achievements and Trophies actually work?

I'm sure there's something out there somewhere that really explains how Achievements and Trophies work so I'd really like to be pointed to that information if possible. I understand that some Achievements unlock new colors of dye now but my understanding is that not all of them do. So what do the other Achievements do for you? Likewise, Trophies puzzle me. Items like Finvir's Trinket make sense, it's a fun little vanity item that you can use again and again. But other trophies I get, as soon as I click Use on them, they simply disappear. So apparently they don't actually DO anything so what, exactly, is their purpose?

Thanks in advance for any info!

If you press J and go to the achievements section, you can check which achievements will reward you with a title or a color (they show up with a small treasure chest icon and you can click on them to see what exactly the reward is). The other achievements just add some points to the character's total achievement points which other players can't see and which have no function in the game right now apart from giving you an idea how many achievements you've completed :)

Trophies just display an animation when you use them with a few small exceptions (I think the bear trap can actually be used to trap enemies?; another trophy works like a pet). They are just like souvenirs (I put all of mine on a mule so they don't take up too much bank space) :)

Thank you for replying. But do the single use trophies (the ones that disappear once you click Use in your inventory) also provide an animation? I've yet to notice one. And what would be the point of a one time animation anyway?

Some trophies that you collect from mobs can be used and will disappear - but when used they go towards the "Collectibles" achievements which can be viewed in your Journal, there are quite a few things to collect. These achievements also unlock dyes. :)

Ah, the ones that disappear when you use them are collectibles. Their item type is also "trophy" which can be confusing. Collectibles will rarely drop from monsters (most monster types can drop one) and when you use them they get added to your collection. If you check the collectibles section of your achievements, there should be a checkmark for the ones you've found already in the corresponding achievement.

I find the following website one of the best sources to see which monster type may drop which collectible:

    http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Collecting

You need to find all collectibles of a specific category to get the corresponding achievement (which unlocks a new common colour account-wide and rewards your character with 10 more achievement points).

The trophies that disappear when you click them aren't actually "trophies". They are the items that were added as collectibles that go towards the achievement. When you click them, that item will be checked off in your journal under the collectibles section.

Ah, okay, thank you! I really just had no idea about Collectibles so I am grateful to have that finally explained! LOL Been playing since launch and I still feel like such a noob! :)

The collectibles were only added in the last big update, it's not as though they've been in from the start, they're relatively new :)
