Traits Discussion..

His All.
After chatting to a few people in my guild I thought I would put up a post and get a more general idea of where people thing Traits on Armour and Weapons currently stand.
There are currently 8 Traits on each item and soon to be more,

I'm wondering what Traits people believe are must haves and how many of the Traits you actually think are worthless?

It seems that most people use Infused on a few pieces of Armour and Divines and that's about it. People tend to want Precise on Weapons so that's one trait out of 8 that are currently available that is sort after. I don't see a lot of people valuing the other 7 traits.

I know its never going to be a perfect System but what Traits do u think need improving to make them Viable and Why?

Would Buffing certain traits make them more sort after then the current favourites?

Is it possible to make all the Traits Viable? or do you believe they all have there uses already?
I'm very interested to hear peoples thoughts on this :)

Increase on weapon attack speed (weighted?) seems like a cool trait...until you learn to cancel animations. As long as that mechanic is in the game weapon speed seems kind of useless.

I like Precise or Sharpened on Weapons. And for armor I'm more interested in set bonuses than some of the traits.

Sturdy, training, and exploration are utterly useless. With the exploration trait, you would have to discover enough new areas to fill a small galaxy in order for it to even have a minimal impact on your xp gain.

Sturdy, Exploration, Training, Weighted and Defensive are all worthless.

    Helmet/Chest/Legs: Infused.
All other Armor Slots: Divines (if Thief), Impenetrable (if PVP).
    Weapon: Precise (Bow/Destro Staff/One Handed and Shield/Two Handed/Dual Wield).
    Sharpened: Bow, Resto Staff.

    Edit:

    Nirnhoned will be OP.

I would like to say that training is not useless when you are leveling an alt

actually training is great if you are interested in playing the pre vet campain. had the 5th skill of two weapons unlocked and morphed as well as all light armor passives and most heavy by early 40'S. so if I stick in cryodill now and stop actively leveling thats an advantage over anyone who didnt.
sturdy would not have been as useless if they didnt completely nerf armor decay: dying 4-5 times in dungeon used to be 2k+ repair bill, then people bitched and wined its was hard and expensive and they nerfed decay to the ground and you can take armor to 0 and it still wont cost that.
everyone is obsessed with crit but with impen rampent in pvp im surprised that penetration isnt more popular.
as far as im concerned its impossible to "fix" armor traits. people can get 80% base crit and pretty much a 100 with potions; so, because ridiculously high crit is a basic part of this games mechanics nothing will be able to compare to impen in pvp period.

It really depends on your build on my armor I use infused on the chest piece, legs, and head and the rest are impenetrable.

I find that the other traits are just there to make crafting stations something you have to work for
That which we obtain to cheap we esteem to lightly, it is dearness only that gives everything its value.

but every single build is doing that pvp except some people choose to go divines instead of infused, like people going crit; but builds with all crafted pieces are basically a combo of these two for pvp. unless there is raid gear and then its just impen on made pieces.
    just as soloeus pointed out.

So most people think they are worthless and dont add enough to be viable? Intresting thoughts.. seems set bonus now out way the traits...
it is just as I thought with alot of usless traits so I wonder if they can be improved.
surley they are not just good for research...

There have been other threads about traits. People always see things from their own perspective only. Useless this, useless that. Sure, of course, if you are a VR12 "uber pro" who just wants to perform the best trial or I don't know what.

Never crossed any of those people's minds that just maybe there are other players out there actually playing at lower levels, and enjoying it.

Well, I got news. If you happen to be one of the "noobs" then, you just might use one of the "useless traits" and find it fairly beneficial. Like, Sturdy for the "poor noob" who isn't sitting on a few kk gold, might just help to reduce those ugly repair costs. Maybe the reinforced trait help a bit more with survival (somehow, not everyone is fully capped and in full legendary gear at lower levels, isn't it incredible?).

Exploration? Yeah, for those who actually like to explore. What... people really like to explore the vast world of Tamriel in ESO? Weird people ...

And so on. What might be alright for me, could be utterly useless to you, but in the end it is there for a reason. Devs who implemented those traits probably got it right, since their vision was not just to cater to the particular "end game uber player" or "ultra pro PvP player" (of course they got it wrong in other areas, but that's a different story).

I agree with @Ninnghizhidda‌ alot of the traits that people are saying are useless are actually potentially beneficial for lower level characters. Experience leveling up a skill line and xp gained from exploration are both useful for a lower level character trying to level faster. Defending and Reinforced provide more protection for newer players still learning the mechanics.

At higher levels then the 'optimum', for want of a better word, traits for people are usually infused on armour to increase health, magicka and stamina, divines (if you have already soft capped your resources and want a minor increase to another mundus stone skill like crit chance or crit damage), impenetrable or well fitted for PvP and precise on weapons for increase to crit chance.

Just because a trait isn't as useful for end game does not mean it was not useful at some stage of the game. I think the traits are fine as is.

Very good points and worthy discussion. I'm glad people find uses for all the traits at some time in the game.

I think its a brilliant idea and I love the crafting set up. We have had quite a few arguments over the validity of Traits so I thought I would open it up. Glad I did as its very interesting to see people perspectives

    Armor:

Training: When I am leveling my characters, Training is important. Initial sets have Training on all or most all pieces. Once their armor/weapon skills are in the 30's or 40's I will stop using Training on all pieces, maybe on just some of them.

Exploration: Good when first entering a zone, so I make a set that has that across the board for traveling in new areas. Although, the boost is not that much once your over level 20 or 30.

Infused: Goes on the Major Enchant Pieces once the skill is leveled

Reinforced: I use this if I don't feel like improving gear

Never have used Divines (tried it, not worth it) or Well Fitted (I have a horse) or Impenetrable (don't' do PvP so no need)

    Weapons

Training: See above, also useful to build up a skill late in the game

Precise: More Crits, what's not to love

Weighted: Nice for Bows or Staffs

Infused: Sure, more damage is better

Charged, Defending, and Powered are not something I use often, or at all.

Really, I need just 3 or 4 traits per line. The only reason I learn others is to make crafted sets. Of course this has bitten me lately as I just learned the 3 or so traits that I would use all the time and stopped doing the research until just recently. So, now I am focusing on that, and just now have reached 6 Traits in almost everything, 7 and 8 in a couple. Not sure if I am going to bother taking anything more to 8 Traits, although there is no reason not to do the research. Will wait to see what the 9th trait is before I decide on learning that or not.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

As others have pointed out, Training is absolutely NOT useless and is probably the best trait until mid 30's.

Starting an alt at level 3 and equipping them with all training armor and training weapons is a must. 5 pieces of light with all training, 1 piece of heavy with training, and 1 piece of medium with training allows you to speed level your skill lines to pick up the best passives early.

Equipping a Training destro staff and keeping 2 destro skills on your bar allows you to get Impulse by level 25! and choose your morph soon after that.

Rushing your main skill lines and armor allows you to choose many more skills to level so you don't have to run around Coldharbour for days at VR12.

If I start an alt, I will put training on one piece of armor and Exploration on the rest, then travel around to guild members and gain a couple of initial levels that way. I've not used Sturdy or Defending, but the others I've put on pieces depending on which character they are for.

    This is so wrong.

I never bother with Sturdy because there are always better traits, but if you're using crafted sets (ie. not just wearing whatever drops you get) it'll save you money on repairs, so it can't be called useless.

Training, as has been pointed out, is fantastic to quickly level skill lines and get access to the skills you want faster.

Exploration is great when leveling, particularly at lower levels when you haven't discovered many locations, and when the xp gain from each discovered location is significant in relation to the amount of xp required to get to the next level. This is a trait that is probably the best one to use early on if you can get a full exploration set of gear, and it gets progressively less useful as you get progressively higher in level (I don't really bother with it past the mid 20s).

I play PvP, have one character, impenetrable is by far the most useful, I'd like divines to actually be useful beyond the very low percentage chance it adds to crit chance. (Using thief)

I always use training and exploration on lower level characters.

It's unlikely that your lvl 8 character is going to need big enchants or a resistance to critical hits or any of the other traits that are useful at high levels, but unlocking weapon/armor feats & passives quickly or getting extra XP from exploring can be invaluable early on.

For real min/maxers there are like five traits. There are others people use and some people like them but in reality for efficiency there are like five total traits.

    PvE - Armor
    Infused for large pieces.
    Divines for small pieces.
    PvE - Weapon
    Precise

    PvP - Armor
    Impenetrable on everything.
Maybe Infused on large pieces if you are going for a burst build
    PvP - Weapon
    Sharpened
Maybe precise if you are going for a crit build impenetrable will make that a kind of silly choice.

Yes there are other options for leveling and specific situations but these are by far the most used end game traits.
