Agreed this is a basic, obvious addition in most mmos. However there is an addon that can help you - binder. Been using it for a while, very easy to use

Addons can synch keybindings.
I wrote a addon for synching chat tabs between Characters:

It's one of those things that just needs way more testing and work if they do it, rather then letting addon programmers do it.
It might be implemened eventually (if they ever have the time for something so low priority) but until then they allowed Addons to just that. So while they did not programm it themself, they made it possible.

Considering that there is only the player and the game is centered around the player for much of what happens, I have assumed that it was a bug that that the settings were not copied to each vestige of the player. I figured they would eventually fix it, but after I had already done it manually, so I never bothered to complain.

One checkbox, (checked, by default) that changes the keybindings across all characters unless unchecked. Or a pop up.

I understand they implemented this in case multiple people played on the same license with different preferences, but I suspect, more often than not, a single individual 'owns' most of the characters on an account.

It was standard practice to have either 1) global keybinds done client side or 2) saved to a template so you could pick a config for the keybinds. Lately most online games are going to a server-based [and request] keybind per character. Absurd! If you want to datamine how your customers are using the keyboard/mouse just grab a copy of our keybind template(s) after we finish creating it [on the client side].

Similar to keybinds it would be nice to have a GUI Layout switcher [set to a keybind]. I know I would have three GUI Layouts: one for exploration, another for general combat, and a last one for PvP.

Build your Layout exactly how you want, go into the Settings menu and select Save/Load Layout, name layout. Then go into the keybind settings and set the Change Layout to your preferred key/mouse press.

Come to think of it, this may be done with an AddOn, perhaps: Grab Controls, get anchors and visibility and switch between layouts defined in a user-define config file (SavedVariables).

Type 1-3 slash commands into chat.

Most of the time you only need to synch it once (during first loggin with the addon). The rest of the time the addon is boring itself to death.
And binder even had a event to trigger the save with, so it does not even need to run a timer like I had to use for UCT.

You can choose not to use Addons. But as all decisions, you can't blame anybody but yourself for the lack of functionality that results from this decision.

If it would take you less time to install and use the addon, then to complain about needing an addon in the first place, you only sound as if you are in love with complaining.

For the chat tabs I made Unified Chat Tabs. It annoyed me enough to make a solution, now you can just use it.


Keybind and Chat Addons don't need to touch the UI or undocumented parts of the game (usually), so they belong to the most reliable addons we can make.

Agree. I use the Binder addon to save and load key bindings account-wide, but it would be great if it were standard.

Yes and the colour options for chat. I have several alts and had to set it up on each one individually.

This should be a CORE option in the game. Not requiring ANOTHER add on I have to deal with breaking on patch day.

Please make key bindings account wide. I have yet to figure out why I would make one character have different key bindings than another one. But, I do change the key bindings on all characters the same way.

Make it a template that I can apply, or not, to any character that I have or roll up.

From update 4 known issues:

User settings have been unintentionally reset.
You will need to set any of your settings again, which includes keybindings, gameplay, camera, interface, and social. We apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused.

Another reason to have account wide keybindings and settings. Now we'll have to redo all settings on all characters, instead of just choosing the preset user template again.
