Recently, someone posted a thread about the reward for the top position on the leaderboard for trials. As you can see, it is an epic quality unique set item:

At the time some were suggesting this is "just the same set you can get running trials without getting the top spot," and this is true. You can get this same set bonus in blue quality as a random drop from completing trials even if you don't get the best time (actually executing the mechanics rather than just DPS'ing through gives you a better chance thanks to the new "finesse" system).
To me, this is EXCELLENT itemization on ZOS's part on a couple levels.
First of all, in addition to some nice stats, the 5-piece set bonus is PERFECT for trials, and is an example of how gear SHOULD work.
You don't get to automatically be the most powerful player in Tamriel just because you devoted your time to one specific aspect of the game.
However, the gear you get DOES make you better at that specific aspect of the game. Brilliant!
Since you only get a certain number of resurrections in a trial, this 5-piece bonus is specifically geared to making you better in trials, and more likely to get the top position.
Now, as to the part about how is getting a purple instead of a blue an adequate reward for the top position for the week? Simple. Consider the current price of purple improvement mats. Even fully traited to require the least possible items to upgrade a blue to a purple, that will still cost you 4 epic improvement items. The average price is 900g-1200g PER ITEM.
So, you can look at it like this. Getting the top spot for the week and getting a purple trial item is basically the same as getting 3600g-4800g. Not too shabby.
Overall I have to say this to me is an example of gear itemization done correctly. Good job ZOS!
