Music in mmo's

Reskal
Reskal
Since a few years in all mmo the music is sort of bombastic-orchestral anyhow, with a touch of "the end is near".
Well you have to like it.

Look at the music of the first big mmo in '99, i guess music is a mirror of its time also.

I wish they would give a bit more love to music these days.

It's certainly interesting. If a bit.. umm.. dunno but it reminds me of gnomes for some reason.

    yeah you're right !

    "Steamfont Mountains

Named for the natural geysers and springs found in its rocky peaks, these mountains surround the gnome city of Ak'Anon. It is known that the dragons had once dwelled here, for the fossilized remains of very young dragon can be viewed inside a small valley. The presence of Steamfont's drakes also indicates that the region may once have had some greater significance to the children of Veeshan. However, that history was lost long before the arrival of the elves or the surfacing of the gnomes.

The mountains of Steamfont are bordered by the Lesser Faydark to the east, and the gates to the glorious subterranean city of Ak'Anon to the far west - gates installed safely within a mountain face and heavily guarded by some of Ak'Anon's most renown warriors."

Game-Scores can cost a lot when you're running into budget ceilings and the cost of licensing compared to that time is a lot different.

Sometimes I like those big budget super orchestra style music. What I like most about ESO is it sounds good but its not overpowering. It kind of blends into the background and accentuates the atmosphere.
But you gotta admit when you first heard this you probably got all excited

Dunno about anyone else, but I love the music in ESO. I still love the music in WoW, especially Grizzly Hills because it has a vaguely 'Firefly' feel to it.

However, that EQ theme was more hopeful and adventurous than impending doom and battlecry than the Skyrim theme, but then Skyrim is set in Skyrim with its hearty Nords and the music reflects that. Heroic, bold, daring...

Music is very important in a game as it sets the tone for moment. A sweeping movement to accompany a vista or a pounding rhythm to set the mood for battle.

It's telling that after 2 days of off-and-on play I just wanted to strangle whomever wrote the music for ArcheAge but I still love the music in ESO.

Brunhilda Icehammer - Nord Dragonknight, 'Smith & Enchantress 'What is 'ranged? I need to hit something!!'
Laehl Direthorn - Bosmer Nightblade, Purveyor of fine Clothes, Bows and Staves
Reeza gra-Zuni - Orc Templar 'War Shaman' and Apothecary
Noemi Snowpaw - Kajiit Dragon Knight - I laugh... or I'd have to kill you.
Kitera Dreamon - Breton of The Dominion: Because those Daggers don't appreciate a great Mage.
Lysara Shadowcroft - Dunmer Bloodmage: This will only hurt a lot.

Part of the reason im getting so sucked into this game is the music. Absolutely love the music in ESO.

Far too many mmorpgs skimp hard on the music assuming youll be listening to lil wayne or whatever while playing.

For me music is a huge part of a games atmosphere ES games never fail to suck me in with fantastic music.

Well the first time i heared this doom / end-is-near / wagnerlike sounds i asked myself "wow so this may be the last game we play ?" ...cause it sounded like "hush play me 2 hours because you don't know if there is a tomorrow".
I heared that worldkiller-hotspur sounds in that many games now, it just XXXXs.
The ESO-sound in the trailor above is the same sort but not that worse as it could be.
Its like junk, and when i hear such music i hope the content of the game is not a tin like its music. With this sort of music in my opinion the industrializing of games started, and the more and more poor and modest we get, the more all new games will be the same.

I agree, music is very important, much more because its not the first we SEE..we consume it but are focused on other things so we do not notice how much it influences our percetion of a game.

But i forgot that and i have to add: the music of Oblivion is wonderful also, very athmospheric and personal, and magiclike. Loved it also.

I think they do give love to the music, especially for ESO. I love the music there, I just wish there would be more, and more and more:)
That said, here is one example of a lot of music for a game... or for anything. Civ with real orchestra what I understand (if not well made synth, ah it does sound a bit... maybe this is the synth version as especially the violins sound like that.. but.. ah whatever here it is:) :
    http://youtu.be/rH-Qw2pbrNk

Hope it works, if not, put this on youtube search "Epic Video Game Music: Civilization V (Full Deluxe Soundtrack)"

Again, don't get me wrong, I love ESO music too. Without music, games wouldn't be the same.

    Cheers...

Meh, Skyrim and Oblivion had better music. I used a mod in Skyrim where you could add music to the game, and I added all the Oblivion music to play randomly with the Skyrim music. It was epic. I wish they could get permission to use all those tracks.

My favorite song was Watchman's Ease from Oblivion:

I can't keep the music on in EQ because the battle music sets me on edge. I'm farming low level mobs for tea leaves, but OMG this one MIGHT hurt me!!!!

Listening to music in mmos kind of breaks my immersion. I don't hear music in real life when viewing nice scenery or engaging in Krav Maga (well actually, they play music at the gym, it's just like every remake marylin manson has made of every 80s song ever so I tend to block it out.)

Well, among MMO's , WoW has the best OST, but ESO isnt bad neither, it just lacks...powerful drums! or epic battle themes of past games ,which they might add in the future :)

yea but you would have to actually play WoW to hear their music, and that would ruin it right there.

ESO has the best music so far in an MMO. It adds to the ambiance of the quests and it isn't annoyingly loopy.

I like the music in ESO. Like it so much I want more. Might have to wait awhile for that (it isn't cheap) but would like to see some work done on the timing of when certain pieces play as well as the fading in/out of it.

I never played EQ, but if ESO had music like that I wouldn't have lasted 3 minutes.

Defiance had some good stuff in general.
And after a long/hectic firefight you could go stand on the cliffs over the pacific ocean, watch the sun rise through the fog, and hear faint slow violin and cello music way off in the distance over the softly blowing wind.
It felt like being in some surreal movie.

All the themes from Arena to ESO

Keep in mind Soule only wrote the themes from Morrowind on.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYOV3qThtnY

After listening through this it's more like the themes from Arena through Oblivion with a tiny bit of Skyrim and a very poor quality early alpha version of ESO.
