If UO was released today as it was back in 1997 it wouldn't last a month. I can see the posts on UO's forums now the first time people lose everything they were wearing and carrying when they died and couldn't get back to their corpse in time.

Crapstorm wouldn't begin to describe it.
    This.

The sad old 'vets' reminiscing about a bygone era are amusing, they totally ignore the fact UO was the only game in town and if you wanted to play an on-line game you had no choice.

Fact is, WOW was the massive 'hit' it was (and still is) because it provided something other than mindless grinding and months of tedium to achieve anything, that's what it still has more players by a factor of 2 or 3 even now because UO-type games aren't what the majority of players want .. or indeed, wanted back then as the numbers of players playing in the 1990s show.

Ah, UO, my love. They really should've just copied everything that was UO and put it in glorious HD and then we'd have the perfect game! For example:
    • UO's justice system is/was superb. Reds, greys, blues. Also Order and Chaos.
    • FACTIONS (go Minax!)
    • Custom player housing.
    • Champ spawns.
    • Harrowers. True risk vs reward!
    • Non-instanced high-end pvm content (Doom).
    • Crafting - runic kits.
    • Nightmares (and taming in general).

Don't get me wrong, I'm still loving ESO, but it's not a UO-beater, yet. There's still time!

I still play UO on the UO:F server, have played UO in one form or another since 1998, and can say that there is no way you can compare the 2 games.
Also, fishing is the last thing I would use to demonstrate a superior game. Really, wth?

Personally I'm just happy I got to enjoy a great game before the genre was infested with the gimme gimme's.

Yeah im on UO forever as well.

I am comparing the UO system of fishing versus the fishing system in eso. One has so much detail and options while the other is lacking it.

Uo versus Eso is not really the point im making....more like 1997 fishing system had so much substance to it and eso fishing does not. UO wasnt about fishing primarily and neither is Eso, but why is UO fishing so much more detailed and thought out and indepth? I think one reason is that this game had pressure to release sooner. Another is that nobody really cares about fishing or other little things in Eso...its all about having something to do at the end and pvp features. I think the design could have put forth a better effort for fishing.

I never played UO but I find it likely that after 5 months of UO's release its fishing system wasn't as in-depth as you are finding it to be now.

ESO is still very early in the stages of its life, the game has a lot of more pressing issues to fix and in due time I'm sure fishing will eventually receive some attention.

Now I know that doesn't totally excuse the poor implementation of the fishing system in the launch, however as often is the case a game needs to be released in a certain time frame, and often intended side features (ie. fishing) end up getting tossed completely or thrown in only half-done. While fishing may not be great in ESO it is good it was done enough to include in the released product of the game as it is now a feature that can be looked upon and fixed in the future instead of feature that never was at all.

I could link the resource and crafting wiki for Star Wars Galaxies and blow your mind away. Thank GOD for The-Repopulation. I've been Alpha Testing that game. Those of you old school SWG fanboys will finally get your pie and chips back.

I watched a harrower event via webcam that UO:renaissance put up (my character was a thief with no combat skills, although in retrospect, that would have made the event 10xs better)

The really cool thing about that event was, with so many people, you had to be really careful what you wore in there because if you died, you weren't getting your stuff back.

I think UO would do fine today (and it is still p2p currently, though with the introduction of trammel, it is just not the same.)

UO was made in a way that while some things were very rare and valuable, most stuff was replaceable. And playing a game like that gets you into a different mindset where you just don't get as attached to your stuff.

If you want to re-experience UO, I highly advise checking out UO: renaissance. The community was okay, though a bit too much of a sausage party for me personally (and some of the beliefs stated in the irc chat bothered me greatly) but they are all very helpful, and will trip over themselves giving you a home to stay in, sometimes gear, stuff to help you train your skills, etc.

I had fun, I just got a lot more focused on ESO so stopped logging in.

Seems like a lot of feedback keeps comparing both games overrall, i dont want to get into that kinda discussion because....we all know UO with todays graphics and engine would blow this game into another dimension.

Fishy Sticks should require fish as an ingredient.

Fish cakes would be nice too.

This. I'm sorry I don't miss having to grind my *** off to make an arrow. RIP Magpies and harpies.

Loved the game but things change and I'm not as young as I used to be. There's not enough time in the day to play a game like UO anymore. If you're looking for the good ole days just grab some dice and find a DM and have at it.

He'll probably tell you ESO blows away the competition and mumble something about good customer support.

120 salmon sells for zero gold, and cannot be cooked or used for anything ..... The future is here. MMO's should just be called fps games if youre going to leave out the details.
