So am I really pigeonholed to Light Armor, a Dress and a Staff to survive/be effective post 50?

Sustain to me refers to damage over a period of around 60 seconds. Even a 20-second reading is not truly a reading of sustained dps.
Level your char to v1, and see if you can get 900 dps on the gargoyle boss in vet spindleclutch sustained over the entire fight of the boss.0 -
sotonin✭✭✭No. it's no longer true for standard VR solo content. However, for trials and such, yes. you need specific builds that can do enough DPS to be allowed in these groups.0

For PvE, no.
I solo'd to v12 pre-nerf in 5 medium/2heavy, rocking dual wield and a bow just fine.
For PvP, you don't need it but you would be better off with it.0 -
apostate9✭✭✭✭✭That pretty much sums up my concerns. Certainly there "are" character classes and builds that would use and excel with all 3 that I listed.
But, that said, I do not want to be forced into any of those options simply to survive in the VR realm or be welcome in a party.
I'm leveling slowly across several alts and no where near 50 as of yet. But this is what I'm hearing in chat and reading on the forums.
How legit of a concern is it?
Are there signs that there will be balance adjustments made in the future in regards to the worth of using Heavy Armor?
Will your Secondary Weapon slot (for melee) always need to be a Staff? Or is a Bow, sword & board a viable option for higher lvls and difficulty?

When you are ready to start doing 12 man trials and your build is sub-optimal, you will have gained all the knowledge and experience you need to make the decision to re-spec or not. Until then, play how you like. I PVP very successfully in heavy armor, with 1h/s and DW. No complaints. Disregard the Internet, it lies.
