Why are there even classes

This thought popped into my head during another post. I'm wondering why ZOS created classes with their own unique skill lines instead of allowing you to pick 3 class skills for your character....or just left all of them open and let you skill up what you want.

    Probably a nod to MMOs.

But don't worry, with Spellcrafting 'classes' will only be a couple of spells / abilities you might or might not even use.
Brunhilda Icehammer - Nord Dragonknight, 'Smith & Enchantress 'What is 'ranged? I need to hit something!!'
Laehl Direthorn - Bosmer Nightblade, Purveyor of fine Clothes, Bows and Staves
Reeza gra-Zuni - Orc Templar 'War Shaman' and Apothecary
Noemi Snowpaw - Kajiit Dragon Knight - I laugh... or I'd have to kill you.
Kitera Dreamon - Breton of The Dominion: Because those Daggers don't appreciate a great Mage.
Lysara Shadowcroft - Dunmer Bloodmage: This will only hurt a lot.

This is total bull, everyone seems to think this but it would not happen. Maybe the pvp god complex players would all have to have the so called best build. However most people have their own play style and type of char they would shooting for. Also the level of immersion and RP that not having classes would add only further proves my point. If your argument was at all true then everyone would be a sorc and no one would be playing the other classes right now...

Cause zen decided it was worth more to copy certain other themepark MMOs instead of following the usual TES class/skill system , where we would not be lock into a certain skill list like this.

let us hope they soon wont also copy the gear treadmill.

    lol wut?!

you MIGHT have a point with MAX 50 skill points, but with 300 - yes all would be the same and very uninteresting in an MMO. Also, I think you'd be suprised how many pvp'ers compared to RP'ers there are. Not saying you cant do both, just that singe type in pvp = boring always fighting yourself. Already hate fighting a similar built templar cos I know exactly what he'll do next (so few actives etc).

I think there was a misunderstanding. The desired system would be choosing between skill lines. From a number of available skill lines, you'd be able to pick a limited amount (probably three), and only have access to those without some sort of costly reset.

The way I see it, it would be a good nod to MMO-players and previous ESO games if classes were suggestions of skill line combinations.

Yes die hard MMO player would probably cry if there were no classes. How could PvP players claim superiority based on their class over their rival's class? How could people rant about certain classes being OP while others have been Nerfed? How could parties blame the Healer or Tank for wiping out?

No, you would take away far too much of what people cling to dearly and leave behind only, well, a game. Heavens forbid!

What about the pve god-complex players? Its just cookie cutter builds that you have a problem with. That being said I agree, I really hope spellcrafting does away with Classes altogether, or blurs the line enough.

If we had an unlimited number of skill points to spend then yes everyone would max out everything, but obviously there would need to be a finite amount of points to spend so the player has to create a unique build of their own. Also the idea presented by the OP is a great one, giving the option to choose a total of 3 class based skill lines to work with would also further promote unique builds...

If I have to choose a class outright, then I am not really getting to "Play the Way I want"..
