Some of the falling damage calculation in this game is stupid

So I was going up a hill, mind you not too steep and at the top it got steeper and I edged over to the side a little and started falling down the side of hill that wasn't that steep and took 3825 falling damage.
That's just dumb. I can understand if you fall off a cliff or something. But I basically slid down the side of a hill for nearly 4000 damage.
Pretty poor falling damage calculation if you ask me.
BTW if you hug a sharp vertical surface while falling even if it's long drop, you take no damage. Explain that.
