Should we be able to change the trait on gear through crafting?

Personally, I would love to be able to change the trait on gear peices, even if it was costly.

Leave it as it is, if you want a new trait then craft a new peice of kit.

Agreed. If its your creation then improve, if not then deconstruct.
Perhaps you mean change trait when you improve ?

Yep, on looted items it's a pain. Change motif as well.

Some of the khajiit drops look a little feminine for my taste.

I feel like crafting a new item is a pretty easy/inexpensive task.

The trait gem in consumed in the crafting process, leaving that trait bound to the item. I feel like the trait would be impossible to remove without dismantling the item in the process, which is what happens when you research the item. I am comfortable with the current system.

The problem is the traits on dropped and pvp set gear are often times horrible.

I don't see a problem with this on regular crafted items. Do not allow the trait gem to come back, but certainly add a new one to get a new buff but ONLY when upgrading. You can't just say slot a new trait and leave the weapon as is, you have to commit to improvement and if not using enough resins or whatever then take the chance your attempt fails.

However, for dropped unique items that are part of sets, NO. A thousand times no, and for the same reason you can't change enchants on a magic item that is unique. You didn't make it, have no idea how to, can't learn, so can't mess with it. You either use it, sell it, or decon to see if you can learn something from it's makeup.

Something like Ashens Grip sets would be fair game, if you have the ability to make it yourself. If you can't, then this would also be outside your knowledge and impossible.

This would allow for crafters to sell some of their stuff, or take a made item and rework it to meet market demand (or as much market as a guild structure allows).

There was a post somewhere about researching dropped item set bonuses and applying them to individual types of armor. Let's say I picked up Cowl of the Warlock, I can research the set bonus like any trait where I can a very specific item type like Light Gloves. After the research period is over I can then craft Light Gloves with Vestment of the Warlock set bonus. The restriction is that you need to have already researched a minimum number of passive traits to that item to be able to research dropped set bonuses to those items. The more advanced the dropped set then the more traits are required to have already researched to research that set bonus. This only applies to dropped item sets, you can't do it with other crafted sets or those bought from NPC vendors (they get pissed when you learn their trade secrets and will HUNT YOU DOWN).

I'd like to see us be able to make trait mods we could apply to gear, same way we can change enchants on gear by overwriting the existing enchant.

On gear you crafted it would be nice.

Allow us to change the traits on gear through crafting but make it require special materials to do so.

There are 4 trait switch materials. Uncommon, Rare, Epic and Legendary.
The can only be obtained via boss drops, while being extremely rare on normal mobs.

Yes, I think we should be allowed to change traits, and I think we should also be allowed to add traits to gear that has none.
