Etiquette of quoting.

I see myself as being reasonably intelligent and fair. I am certainly often grumpy. I just find it lazy and slightly insulting to quote something in its entirety, that I JUST read 2 seconds ago, just to add, "lolz!" or "I agree!". Even adding a reasonable discussion after does not excuse the half-arsed laziness of just quoting a huge block of text.

Some use /snip, some don't. Breaking a post down to show relevant points and discussing each one makes an argument clear and appreciated by readers.

I'm not an avid forum reader so if there is some general guide or unwritten rules I'd be happy to hear, as I am sure others would too.

Am I the only grumpy old man that thinks this?

Sorry couldn't help myself. A lot of times I quote because it is faster and then people know who you are responding to, also if it's a large post then you can go point by point , sometimes you can quote the whole thing and post it in several different points. But so far no real guide or unwritten rule.

    Lol, I agree.

But no, seriously, I usually try to trim the fat and reply to certain points, or just make it clear who I am talking to without quoting a block of text. Sometimes, when I just reply to particular points, people get mad and say something like "LOL why didn't you mention this part of what I said? Is it because I'm right?" Really, the only winning move around here is not to play.

I have been pleasantly surprised by how little that happens on these forums.

That may say more about the other forums I frequent, but I suspect there is a tolerance issue going on here too.

I think most people are just too lazy to edit that markup such that the quote gets broken up. Too lazy to snip either.

You, OP, are the exception to the rule in that you want to actually understand someone's argument. Most posters do not care to understand deeply or follow someone's reasoning. Most just look for the quickest route to ridicule.

It's even worse on some other forums i frequent.
Especially so in one that is related to my other hobby, old Porsche cars.
Someone will post 10+ pictures in a thread and then people keep quoting those damn pictures over and over again just to add one line of "Nice car!".

It's a pain to edit quotes on my phone, but I do it anyway because I'd really rather only quote the part that's relevant to what I want to talk about, unless I reply to the entire post

Also, super long quoted posts take forever to scroll through on my phone.

Yeah, I don't know that it's really that big of an offense...

And then, you have to think, if it's really that bad of an offense to you then things must be going pretty well for you. I can think of a million things worse than someone misquoting, quoting too much, and quoting for the purpose of responding with a one word answer.

For example, I could be responding to a post that should never have been made. <3

I usually use *snip* if the text isn't relevant to what I'm talking about.

I do like how the forums will nest previous quotes for you.

The nice thing about forums is that even if someone does quote an entire wall of text, you can easily scroll through it and skim it to see if there's anything worth reading. The only time I've ever been annoyed is when the quoted text is so long it breaks the forums (e.g., dxdiag).

Personally i dont mind or even care really to edt my posts quotes most of the time , only on very few ocasions with trully big posts i will break them down and answer piece by piece.
The thing that really pisses me off is when they quote you, and change the text to make you look like a confrontational butt.

    Indeed.
As a courtesy to my readers, I try to follow guidelines such as these. If context is needed to understand a quote, I'll quote all the necessary elements, and bold whatever I'll actually be discussing.

Up to now, nobody's accused me of mis-quoting because I had cut out the clutter ... so I guess I'm doing something right :p
