Shadowfen fishing

So I am relatively new to the fishing in this game. I wanted to work towards the achievs for dye. I understand the basic concept of the 4 water types and different bait types for each water type but what I'm not getting are some zones like Shadowfen that don't appear to have an ocean or lake water. It all appears to be river or foul (though most of the swamp water that I would think of as foul either takes bait for rivers or lakes..not foul).

I have been fishing various fishing holes for hours and though some of them take lake bait without giving back the "used bait" I only ever catch the same fish (river betty, fish roe and salmon) and the same 3 rare fish (boga, hardyhead and opah). Is there some trick to this that I'm missing here? This is getting more boring than real fishing o.O

If you fish with someone else, your likelyhood of catching rare fish increases. I believe 3 people is the ideal number, but 2-4 works fine, too.

Appreciate the response but didn't really answer the question. The question was about finding fish for ocean and lake category in a zone like Shadowfen which has neither. It seems that each zone has 3 rare fish for each water type (12 total) but if there is no ocean how do you find those that would normally go into that category?

I did discover some "lake" water in the zone..even though it looks more like a swamp but I'm still unclear where I would find ocean fish in a zone that doesn't border the coast at all.

    Solution:
if one watertype is missing, the fishs can be found in the other three watertypes. indeed, shadowfen has no ocean - that means, you find 4 rare fish in lakes, 4 in sewage water and 4 in rivers. if you need more details, feel free to send me an ingame mail "Zalea Talaris".

What @Zalea said. It's usually 1 fish per other water type. Using Shadowfen as an example, you can find 1 ocean fish in each of the other three water types (foul, lake, river) in addition to the 3 fish normally found in each of those other water types. There is a pattern; it's always 1 specific ocean fish that will be found in each of the other waters, so there is no chance of finding 2 different ocean fish in rivers.

This will probably help you at least a little: https://docs.google.com/a/binghamton.edu/spreadsheets/d/195fJ7bK4hkXYgncC4Dpp6FIZqKAr5M6wEg7yaIjfoVA/edit?pli=1#gid=0

I suggest the RareFishTracker addon, although it doesn't tell you which "displaced" fish (ex. ocean fish in Shadowfen) are found in which water holes (at least not yet). I had a screenshot of the Shadowfen fish found in the different water types, including the displaced ocean fish, but it wasn't my own and I seem to have misplaced it. If I find it again I'll post it here.

As for only catching 3 rares in lake spots and not a 4th... I think the RNG is just being a ***** to you. I've seen at least two people -- @Magnificat was one of them, I think? -- post that they've had trouble hooking a specific fish, even in a zone where all water types exist, while others have not. I've been able to quickly catch fish that other people had trouble finding, and vice versa. It seems to be random.
tl;dr I think this is just poor luck, since people have still been able to get the Shadowfen fishing achievement. It might have gotten bugged since 1.3, though.

There are some lake spots in Shadowfen, and apparently update 1.3 made them spawn more frequently?

One is reported to be near the bridge south of Ten-Maur-Wolk, but I haven't checked it out yet.

Ok, thanks for all that info. That was very helpful. I assumed there must be some sort of pattern or logic to it so the fact that the missing water type gets the fish split among the other water types sort of makes sense. Great info thanks.

In a related matter with Shadowfen..anyone know where all the foul water is in that zone? I found very little at the hatching pools but nowhere else. I have seen info that the "lake" north of Stormhold is considered lake water but the nodes there for me all take river bait only. The only lake water I have found is around Zuuk and wayshrine Loriseal.

There is sometimes 1 or 2 foul near the group dungeon door. Sometimes they are lake spots though
