You can select the render used via the usersettings.txt in the Documents folder.Have you tried running it in OpenGL instead of DirectX? I used to randomly crash and could not restart the game again unless I rebooted my PC. After switching to OpenGL, no more crashes.

I'm not a fan of upgrading drivers unless there's a problem with the existing one or the new one offers a specific benefit and no problems are reported with it on the manufacturer's forum. My Nvidia driver is 2 years old and so far, without wishing to tempt fate, the game has run flawlessly. I often think there's an advantage in running a game with drivers that were in use when the game was being developed.
