It was once impossible to gain XP if the gap between you and the mob was greater than 5. Have they changed this?
Yes. Which is why I asked. Unless they have changed things, it would've been impossible for the level 11 player to gain anything as the content was far beyond him.stefan.gustavsonb16_ESO wrote: »It was once impossible to gain XP if the gap between you and the mob was greater than 5. The mobs were like 10-12 levels higher than that lvl 11 player. Not a problem then.
Since when it is possible to get any xp or loot from mobs with more then 5 level difference?
Or may be that guy simply wasnt aware of that ?
You cant even do any dmg to high level mobs. You just cant.
So they have changed it. It was once impossible for lowbies to gain XP or loot from mobs far beyond their level; even the chests were locked to them and labeled, "Impossible".stefan.gustavsonb16_ESO wrote: »The only hard blocker I know of is that you won't get any experience or loot from mobs that are way below your level. You can't go to your starter zone at level 40 and one-shot wolves for XP, but it's definitely possible to power level a character by grouping up with higher level players that carry you through fights, or just leech in on someone elses's fight by getting a single hit in, as the OP described.

Here i was galloping in StormHaven towards my next quest when a dark portal opens right above me . I immediatly got off my horse and prepare for battle .
Two fire Atronachs and and a Dremora appear , i think to myself :" Meh, that won't be too hard , let's do this " .
So i of course engage in battle and everything is going well but then i catch a glimpse of another player coming my way. I automaticly assumed that he was going to join the fight because that's usually what happens . But as the fight goes on, i see no sign of anyone else fighting . As i look around i see that guy simply standing there watching me .
So i then think to myself :" OK , so this guy wants a show, i'll give him a show ".
I make quick work of what was left from the first wave , then the second wave comes which i remember included an Ogrim and two more Dremoras.
Anyways , after a pretty decent display of my abilities , switching between my resto staff and my destruction staff , using knock backs and throwing in a few heals when needed , i stand there , victorious and very proud of the way things turned out .
I then proceed to loot the corpses and then turn my attention to my spectator only to find out that he is lvl 11 . I'm lvl 25 and the creatures i was fighting were lvl 23 if i recall correctly.
So i of course ask him what he's doing here and he replies to me by saying :" Lvl me up , i'll follow you".
So my reply to him was :" Hah !! you're a very funny person , but nice try". I turn my back to him and continue on my way towards my quest which was to gather 5 glowdusts from the nearby Willowisps.
As i look back , no surprise there, that guy is obviously following me but i don't care. I simply pay no attention to him and proceed to pull my first Wisp. Very easy kill but of course my new friend had made sure to throw in one attack to secure his share of the loot and experience.
I didn't care , i simply kept ignoring him and went on minding my own buisness. After my fifth kill, i was of course done with my quest but before i could do anything else, i see that guy pulling another wisp. I don't think i need to remind you all that this guy was only lvl 11 and that those wisps were twice his lvl.
My reaction was to laugh, summon my horse and sprint out of there , leaving him to die .
I don't know what went on in this guy's head but i had clearly refused to power lvl him and he chose to follow me around anyways and then he decided that he would speed things up by pulling monsters to me . You all simply cannot imagine how happy i was to have this perfect oppertunity to teach him this well deserved lesson.
I often intervene when i see someone struggling in a fight , being a healer myself, i saved many lives and received many thanks in my travels and i would normaly never leave a person to die like that . But i'm sure the majority of you will agree with me when i say that this guy had this one coming .
This little adventure seriously made my day . It's not everyday that i get the chance to really punish a troll , today was my day hehe.
Hope you all enjoyed this little story

There is also a XP/Loot cap going upward, but it is more than 5 levels.
I'm one of those people who does go into higher level zones just to see how much i can get away with before things become impossible.
I have been able to kill and loot mobs that were 10+ levels above me and they did give me XP, but as mentioned above by someone, there is a point where you simply stop doing *any* damage at all to mobs and there is no XP or loot.
I'm not sure about the exact level delta at which this occurs, i'll have to do some more testing ...

@Pele, you've always been able to get XP's so long as you are not more than five levels above the mob.
If you could drop it, you could have it. Death usually prevented this from happening very often though.
There was tremendous benefit to sneaking into higher level zones, as the drops were good (quality and gold + mats). There was also the challenge of it and the new change of scenery. I recall perusing Rivenspire when I was halfway through Stormhaven, just for the gathering purposes.
Things like what the OP mentions are common. If the individual kept lingering, I believe I probably would have brought the fight to him though - let him earn it.
