Can I pick up/take various items lying around?

My character needs better armour and weapons but has no gold to buy them with. I find items like armour and weapons lying on a table and wonder if I can just pick them up and take them? Is is stealing, what happens if I am seen?

As of now yes. But their values suck. Better to go questing and get the rewards or learn to craft. It's not stealing....yet. When the justice system gets put in then yes it will be stealing.

As of right now you can take them with no penalty, but the quality of these items is less than great

As of right now, you can take them without penalty. Most of them aren't sterling examples of equipment, but if you need a piece to fill a void they can sometimes fit the bill. When the crime update comes out, it will be considered stealing. But for now, steal away!

You can also use them towards the item deconstruct achievement/dye, at least i'm assuming you still can pending an unlisted change.

Just to say, we don't really know what the justice system will entail, so we can't say for *sure* that it'll be stealing.

But odds are pretty good that in towns, it will be.
