Assuming you are one of the many who crashes during gameplay..the crash reports tell you how many players at the time you crashed are online in the server.
Ive crashed loads during the afternoon and I see around 4000 players on the EU server. Thats at least some numbers for the people.

It's a megaserver. We do not know if it is a cluster of 100 servers with 4000 people per server or 10 servers with 4000 people per server. Or 99 servers with 20000 people that have filled up and 1 server with 4000 people that is just getting ramped up with a population.
Those numbers do not really tell us much. Too many unknowns.4 -

Instance, not zone. Zone would be chaotic. And by instance I don't mean some phased instance of a quest, I mean the instance of the server you are on. They probably have 100's or 1,000's of instances depending on their cap per instance.2 -

✭Dunno , 4k seem a very low number for everything , even if ESO have a major sub problem.

. ESO EU PVE ~=12k players? plus around 2k players per PVP campaign so let's say 20k players max?
Seems legit. Game doesn't feel like it has hundreds of thousands of players.5 -

Yes, saw that report myself, 800k is decent.ESO has around 800k subs, it's not disastrously low, so not to worry all
the 4000 might be instance, it might also be players on the physical server in the rack who might run multiple instances, many quest instances have only one player.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
