Returning player - my thoughts so far

luke.glanfordrwb17_ESO
Background: Purchased game soon after release. Played for nearly 2 months. Main criticisms of the game:
  • VR Grind
  • Bots
  • Bugs
  • Lag and responsiveness
  • Exploits
  • Imbalances

I resubbed a week ago when off work for two days due to illness. I had heard there had been a few major updates since I stopped playing, so I was keen to see how the game fared.

VR Grind - Slight Improvement
It's still a massive grind - but somehow tolerable now. I'm not sure if there where any changes to the VR system, or maybe the break away from the game just refreshed me.
It's still a grind that I don't like, and am looking forward to the changes to this system that have been spoken about. I'm actually thinking of unsubbing again, just to wait for this update. It'll take me months to get from VR2 to VR12 due to my low dps (stamina build FTL apparently).

Bots - Massive Improvement
None spotted. No spam emails received. Great work. Not much else to say.

Bugs - Good Improvement
Since resubscribing, I haven't come across any bugged quests, nor have I seen the crazy-NPC-head animations, nor ore nodes that cannot be mined. I have noticed other annoying bugs, like when I swap my weapon, it appears as something else. Overall though, happy.

Lag and responsiveness - Slight Improvement
I still find that the weapon swap is hit and miss. Makes combat frustrating. Similarly with skill activation. I live in Australia, so I'm not sure if this is just a thing that I have to live with, or it is the game. I don't think I could play competitively with this lag / responsiveness though, which makes me think this will not be a long term game for me, regardless of how good everything else is.

Exploits - Good Improvement
I remember that item dupe episode, the caltraps, the immortal DK vamps, the alt-hiring exploits etc. I'm glad to say this seems to be, for the most part, fixed.

Imbalances - Minimal Improvements
I'm a heavy wearing, stamina based, DK. I've switched from a 1H+S to a 2H to improve my dps to get through the VR grind at a tolerable pace. However, it appears anyone waving a wand around will absolutely pwn everything in sight with no apparent trade off. I can follow a wand-waver around and not even get to the mobs before they're dead. Now I feel compelled to wear a dress and pick up a stick too - even just to be able to get through the VR grind (and to be considered to be taken into a Trial, or pvp).
This was a major imbalance issue months ago, and it appears nothing has been done about this, and I've found no indication that anything ever will. I appears that vampires are still considered awesome, and Werewolves are bleh - probably due to the stamina vs magica imbalances again.
The only balances I've noticed is that DK's have been nerfed. Which sucks for me.

Dk has been balanced and not nerfed ^^ , i'm playing a dk right now , and in pve it's still better than my v12 nb. Anyway if you are stamina 2h based, i advice you to going medium armor, due to +critic chance bonus and the stamina reduction costs (it there was not when you stopped to play).
Just after Craglorn , the grind on vt levels has become much easyer, I did v4-v12 in about 3 weeks.

Nice post and I agree with most of what you have said. Bots are dead, not really sure why but it is amassive improvement to the entire experience. Bugs have been much improved but the weapon swap one is driving me nuts too. Lagis still a big issue especially in Cyrodill when I have had rates like 4FPS that make the game unplayable. I couldn't just reloadui or relog to fix them but had to actually quit right out and shut everything down.

Light armour and staff still dominates,I am glad they don't overreact with massive nerfs but some tweaks to some other options tomake thema little better would help.

Well worded good post, although I have a few concerns.

#1, there has to be a balance between the light/medium/heavy armor sets, in the sense that the heavier armor sets provide more armor (survivability) and should therefore award less damage output. It may be a bit over the top, as it is now, where light armor is immensely better than the other two.

#2, there has to be a "best way". If everything is the same, as in a shield wielding stamina-based, heavy armor wearing, sorcerer is going to be capable of doing the same damage as a destruction staff wielding, magicka based, light armor wearing sorcerer is. That would make for a horrible game, in my opinion, but I'm one of those people who try to make my character as powerful as possible, by making all the right choices.

#3, the VR grind from 1-12 is horrible, I agree. It only takes a couple of days though, if you do it the fast way. Craglorn boss-, anomalies or hircine grinding. I went from buying the game to VR12 in about 9 days of playing. The VR levels were absolutely no fun though, it was ONLY a grind. An utterly pointless extension of the leveling system with, for me, zero enjoyment.

Yeah, I'm not asking for Heavy Armor builds to as good as other Armor types for DPS, but right now it seems like the gap is too large.

Conversely, the survival skills of the light armor builds seem better than even heavy armor at the moment.

    1 - VR12 in 9 days. I swear the rate I'm going it will take 9 months.

Don't worry luke -- you will learn things as your character grows and anyway, ZOS did a major Nerf to mobs in V+ 1-10 content on July 7th. For the most part it is much, much more 'comfy' soloing along there now.

*Caveat: ya might want to at least TRY to get groups in the dungeons and delves so you can get prepped if you plan to go on to PvE endgame. If you are just using PvE to level so you can head into Cyr, then find some grind to get on soon as you hit Craglorn. Sadly, getting groups is a mirage in TESO excluding grind-sappers mid-to-upper content though for some players.

If you want fotom, it's Sorcs.

Sorcs have basically everything that dk's have but are better suited for magica and do not like dk's need both weapon crit and spell crit.

Edit: Thou my NB and DK are capable, but the sorcs, there you have the best.
Many believed DK's were the best for a long time while in fact it was sorcs because they only need spell crit and cloth and are perfectly suited for light + staff which is the best. They also have better magica regen.
Like DK they also have aoe root but in total with better dps and good survivable skills too.
