Sounds like you might be trying to half tap yourself up to the edge. Try mapping the walk toggle, or sneaking, or hold block as you edge yourself closer. I love the function in combat and it's very useful to have it Double Tap. Now edging up to a cliff to look over usually will plummet me off the edge because of how i move up "attempting" to get close.
