in game chat still required....

Don't think they will due to development and additional bandwidth required but in game chat would encourage grouping for some people. Personally I use my guild for banks and trading and feel no bond to my guild at all as I have no idea what my guildies are like. I could make the effort and talk to them and I'm sure they're some who are OK, but stinks of a chore. Give me the option to get to know people in the game from within the game.

Don't want it? Turn it off, mute chat etc..

Yeah, I'm all for an ingame chat system. Would be great to have something like that. Maybe with channels.

    Don't know.. like.. /Say, /Shout, /Zone, /ENZone, /DEZone, /FRZone, /Group, /whisper and /G1 through /G5 for guilds.

I know, now I'm being crazy.. but imagine the possibilities.

I imagine it would look something like this:

LoTRO was released with this and no one used it, those inclined to use voice chat overwhelmingly already used Vent/TS/Mumble/whatever and the in-game feature sucked royally anyway.

Even when some tried to use it new players and those not used or not happy to use VoIP felt intimidated by being told to use it if they wanted to join in simple over-world quest groups.

It may be a 'good thing' to the OP who wants to socialise but there's another side to it that isn't a 'good thing' for many: simply saying "don't use it if you don't want to" doesn't answer the problem.

That happens now, mumble and TS are required for many guilds and groups. I'm just interested in meeting similar people rather than those enticed by a guild's website.

LOL all that and the most important part: SPEED OF COMMUNICATION...

The definition of 'Time is money' has been claimed and convoluted into a distinct and special herd-acceptance not voiced anywhere more than in current virtual world gaming. "What...you want me to read that shiz? Heh, only thing worse than that would be to have to TYPE that shiz in a chat box."

Personally I type 120 wpm accurately, probs specifically BECAUSE I raided from way back in oldschool premier MMO's and had to learn to type fast *giggles!
But my babe and some other friends? Hmm...not so much. Many, MANY couldn't do it if you gave them a literal real world money carrot.

They would say: "Give me my righteous headset and leave my hands free to do magic, or at least cause havok. ^-^

I will add though for me...voice com in PvP is absolutely outstanding! But I detest using it in PvE.

I am not an rp-enthusiast, but do like to kick back, immerse and focus on my character and ignore irl for a couple hours here or there. Nothing, I mean almost NOTHING that will baitch me out more than to be in a group (*which is rare in this game for PvE anyhow unfortunately)...and be heading to the next objective when I hear:

"Sec plz, gotta go change my laundry over/Ohhhhh did you see that pass -- 12-nothing at the end of the first quarter --or-- Gotta run outside and move my car, roommate can't get into the driveway ---etc. "...or a zillion other personal remarks that have no bearing on my life on the planet/virtual world of Tamriel.

What? I used it all the time--often you'd get a group together, some had teamspeak, some had mumble, some had nothing--and it was GREAT to be able to communicate on a common client in-game. Used it for kinships, used it for casual grouping--used it for private chats. It was great.

    Don't make assumptions.

An in-game voice ability would be a very useful, social feature for the countless times users aren't using the same external voice app, or just want a quick, hassle free way to voice without going through 20 minutes of "wait--got to install vent", "wait--my teamspeak client is doing something weird", "wait--I have to change my mumble settings".

I would like voice chat during Grouping, not for other times though. I understand most people prefer third party solutions (Skype for instance) but that only works once you know someone in game, not ad hoc groups.

I would love to chat more with my group mates, but stopping everything to type out a message is not working.

Heck, even if they would put in a Speech to Text translator, that would be cool. Although some of the texts would be like Arrgghhhh your @%#@%&^& when will you die you W$%#$ honey can you make me a sandwich please what the #$@& just hit me.....

I hate voice chat and I refused to join any guild that tries to make me to use it. For reasons that I will not get into, I can not use voice chat. I tried to RAID before and no one ever talk to me and if I try to talk with them, no one ever reads the chat box. I do have a lot of fun in the text box, RP'ing, telling how to beat bosses, etc

Last week, I join a PUG to do a VR12 dungeon, but we have trouble with one boss. After a few wipes, they just left and left me hanging in the dungeon. They did not tell me of their plans or they took the time to figure out the boss. They either are talking in a guild chat (that I can not see because I was not part of their guild) or they are using voice chat.

The guild I run. We have raidcall but it is optional and is not required to play the game. One of my officers, she is actually deaf. So we use in game text chat as we have a rule that no guild member is left behind and if we used voice chat we would be leaving her behind.

well whatever your reason for not wanting to use voice chat, you can just use the voice chat system without actually talk on it. When I was raiding in other game, the guild required us to use voice chat, though i didn't speak much on it, i just used it to listen for instruction or other stuff, and I replied in written chat.
I kinda understand why they want people to have voice chat, because it's easier to say the instruction than try to type it out.

I really hope they don't waste time developing a system that is going to be used by barely anyone (in game chat systems are rarely ever used because they never get it right) They can spend their resources better elsewhere.

I want to talk and interact with others, not listen to a mono log of someone else.

For example, what is better / more fun to do? Just read forums and never 1) ask questions 2) tell jokes / be silly 3) learn about other's experience, etc or be active on a forum? Voice Chat is no different in a way, to get the most of it, one must talk and listen too.

Besides, sometimes I am forced to take my head phones off thus I can not hear the game or the voice chat. For me, voice chat simply does not work well at all and there are hundreds like me out there as well.

    What addons are you using?

    This char uses ....

Addons you can see on the screenshot:
    Party Frames: WarLegend Group Frame
    Chat: XTimestamp
    Interface: Azurah
Clock: Clock - Tamriel Standard Time
    Damage Popups: Combat Cloud
    Damage Meter: Recount
    Buffs/Debuffs: Srendarr

Addons not seen on screenshot, in case you're interested:
    Inventory: Advanced Filters
    Clothes: Wykkyd's Outfitter + Libraries
Crafting: AI Research Grid and Research Assistant
    Guild Store: GSSE and Shopkeeper
    Stats: SoftcapInfo and SpentSkillPoints

Some addons I had to modify or get fixes for. But the ones you see on the screen are not modified, just customised using the addon settings I think.

Haven't tried it myself but would recommend to have a look at http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/112413/phinixui-addon-powered-interface-for-eso/
