I think it will be a lot clearer if you just use GMT when referring to updates for the EU server. Many european countries use GMT and it will help avoid any mix-ups like this.

(you can still put EDT in brackets if you want...)

This, it still baffles me that not only Zeni uses US Timezones but also many different ones.

Very unclear to me. Every time I have to google what timezone there talking about this time.

So plz Zeni use GMT then we Euro's know what you mean

    Hello everyone,

The dates were not expressed correctly because of a little mix up in the time-zones. We are updating the forum banner, here is what will happen for the next maintenance :
    • For the NA megaserver : August 6th - 8AM EDT (2PM CEST)
    • For the EU megaserver : August 6th - 10PM EDT (Which is August 7th - 4AM CEST in Europe)

Sorry for the confusion, and thank you for your never-failing attention to detail!

Or in other words... the EU gets the shaft... again !

Yep. Why the hell do we in EU have to wait friggin 14 HOURS longer for such a MAJOR HOTFIX.

FIX IT NOW TOGETHER WITH THE NA SERVER!!!!!!

There is no logic reason behind this. This is an absolute no go.

I agree, GMT (or UTC) (UK time - 1 in summer & UK time in winter) is the standard in Europe most people in EU know if their time zone is GMT+1 +2 etc. CEST (GMT+2) is rarely used even in the countries that have CEST time.

Sounds good in theory, except we still get the issues, and still have to wait longer for it to be fixed. Remember you're dealing with a company that didn't move EU servers to EU until 4 months into release.

Did you forget to take down the servers? Is it a live hotfix?
    Correct info about the date?
    Delays?

The reason I ask so harshly is because not just my guild but we are several guilds who interact on a daily bases.

Did you post the wrong time?

This time zone business is SOOO funny. Yes, OP is correct and even Zenimax cannot figure out timezones... well keep spamming us with ur weird EDT timezone since ce(s)t is so hard for you guys.

Time Zones are a bear anyway. I have friends across the States, in the UK and the mainland of Europe, keeping them straight in my head is a difficult problem, compounded by the fact that some states and most European countries and the UK go on and Daylight Savings time differently then we do.

The is not the only problem LOL, yesterday a man in India had my birthday as November 11, when it is actually July 11.

To misquote an old saying "The States are a foreign country; they do things differently there." Dates, time and we will die before we accept the metric system in our daily lives.

Yes good sir, we still get it, but when it is done like this, I can be prepared for what is going to happend, and such can plan on what to do instead of playing if I know that something will go horribly wrong.

Nuh they are americans there is nothing else ... but local time

This is, for the most part, true. Americans deal with quite a few time zones just inside American borders, at least 7, any anyone who travels or deals with someone from another time zone has to contend with the time differences. This has lead to a cultural tendency to express time in the local time zone and then conversions are done as needed from there as people from other time zones are included. Right or wrong, this is just the way it is done and it isn't going to change any time soon.

When an American posts a time, that is the time the event will happen according to the time zone they used, local or not. If they follow that time with any other time zone conversions, the times that follow are for some perceived convenience to the person reading. If there is any doubt caused by an incorrect time zone conversion, the original, first, time is the correct time.

When an American posts a time in GMT, they will mentally convert that to a local time and use that conversion since no one in America except for a few crazy system administrators uses anything resembling GMT or UTC in daily life.

So, when I read the notice from Zenimax, I see that all the important times (first listed) are EDT and that they are both on August 6. It is clear to me that the European server will be down several hours AFTER the North American one. The CEST times are some perceived convenience conversion and I have no idea why they picked CEST or whether that time zone means anything to anyone.

Until they change how they post their maintenance times, I would suggest focusing only on the posted EDT times and converting those to the time zone you need.

The downtimes seem to be extremely inconvenient to everyone. It seems like its down almost every other morning with two down times a week. So this week we will have 3? Especially during 3rd shift primetime playtime. Very irritating because I'm probably going to fall asleep before the game comes up. Yep. I'd rather play when there are less people on. More peace in the starter zones....

no, we get the same broken stuff as NA got before us. so theres no reason to wait for EU Hotfixes. Doesnt make any sense. But what makes sense to most decisions zenimax makes.

And since the playerbase in europe is at least comparable (numberwise) to the NA one and we do actually pay €12 a month, you dont think a little convenience is in order?

Actually, I dont care how and what americans do - you guys use inches so... really says a lot. When someone that I pay money to wants to make a service UNAVAILABLE to me they better damn start posting in MY timezone - this is how we, the adults, do it.

Just two... Monday to release the update, Wednesday to fix guilds. There is no Thursday maintenance if you read what they wrote and they have not changed it.
We’ve finished testing our fix, and are preparing to apply it to the live servers and restore guild functionality. We’ll be taking both megaservers offline tomorrow (Wednesday) to deploy the fix. Due to this downtime, we won’t be performing maintenance during our regular windows on Thursday.

What? I have no 'feelings' when it comes to timezone, but I think ZOS approach displays some deep level of incompetence, which is further strenghtend looking at all the bugs and glitches in the game.

    Edit:

My point is simply that if a company can develop an MMO (at least a pretty good alpha) but dont have the required skillz to make announcements to ppl in their own timezones something is wrong with the world - this is true regardless of how and/or why americans usually does it, MMOs are are worldwide and not country based, this is nothing new. And while it might seem as a minor detail to some of our NA based friends, I guess to most people such minor details (along with bugs from beta etc) really does come across as lazy and further diminishes their image.

Americans like to be confusing... trust me I'm American lol, so for me it would be close to 10am right now, for my friends on the East Coast it would be almost 11am, for my friends on the West Coast it would be 8am almost, for my friends in the UK and Spain it would currently be about 5pm for them for my friends in Germany I think it's about 9 hours ahead of me, but I'm not sure lol.

But yeah hate having to do timezone conversions especially when it's for other countries besides the US. But people are right most Americans do use the phrase "My Time, Your Time, Our Time." etc.

Which is why we don't use Timelines, since time is not made out of lines, it is made out of circles, that is why Clocks are round.
