I was shocked when I saw this thread. I think the dye system in this game is one of the best things they've done! (Other then the inability to dye shields and weapons.)
I'm thinking perhaps people need to get some of the better achievements for some of the better dyes. I certainly don't think they're washed out:
I had many other fabulous looking choices as well, but settled on these colors. Mind you I've also dedicated some effort to getting some of the more difficult achievements, which is a good thing: it gives players new goals to strive for to unlock nicer looking dyes.

I have suggested many things in the past during the beta and since and a lot of things I did in the /feedback and posted on the forums with actual solutions got implemented. They could fix everything tomorrow yet people would still not be satisfied.... ridiculous. The ability to dye is better than not even if you don't like the colors or they don't match up.

Congratulations whiners, now everyone is wearing ugly, washed clothing.
I love how the colours are washed out. If you wore your best shirt out onto a muddied and blooded battlefield, I can assure you it wouldn't be the same shirt on your way out.
You wouldn't even need to spend time on a battlefield. Just spend most of your days out in the sun, snow and rain and your clothing will lose it's once vibrant glow.
The new system is gritty, and the subtle changes they made to the overall colour scheme put a smile on my face. If I wanted saturated colours I'd go back to Guild Wars, WoW or give Wildstar a go.
I see your point. It would be better if all the armours were consistent. A lot of the armour types are cluttered with scratches though; especially the lower level stuff. But by that logic the heavy armours should look battered scratched and dented.. but they don't.. and the colours are representative, not some pseudo wash that lets the 'pink' shine through as with medium armours.

On plate, from what I can tell, the dyes look great.
On cloth and leather, they are a wash, and sometimes don't even come out as the right color. On my leather, my skyshard blue is light green.

Also, all the armor got changed, so now, my nice dunmer level 14 homespun outfit on my alt went from a very nice darkish blue grey and tan to that hideous newbie green. The green I had been avoiding desperately.
Only, I can't avoid it because I'm really just tinting leather and cloth. So I don't actually look good in anything unless I just want to wear heavy armor.
Oh, and my leather itself, it's fuchsia. It comes that way now. So I am putting a wash over fuchsia leather. It's almost pink really. I had to go with ruby throne red which I inexplicably have access to, because red is the only thing that works to wash out the fuchsia, anything else turns into green tints or purple.
I complained about this before, but there is also only one white in the entire system. Juliasnos white for trials. Every other white is a grey or light pink or light blue. I am staring at some people in julianos white on trial gear and it looks very white, probably because they are wearing plate.
I don't care about black, I want to wear white. I want to actually have a reason to dye my armor other than hiding the ugly that it has become.
Today's patch did mention gradients or something we can adjust in our Settings...won't change how OTHERS SEE YOU lol, but will change it on your system a "tad"...maybe.
