Definitions of Griefing and Griefers

For some reason there are folks who have their own definitions of "Griefing" and "Griefers", there point being what players in ESO are doing that disrupts the play of others (in this case Dying) is not really Griefing... @smeeprocketnub19_ESO‌ has said this before, and while I disagree with him, I wanted to ask for proper definitions of "Griefing" and "Griefers".

I am putting a Definition from Wikipedia that closely agrees with my own thinking, but I would also like to hear the definitions of others.

Wikipedia - Griefing
Griefing is the act of chronically causing consternation to other members of an online community, or more specifically, intentionally disrupting the immersion of another player in their gameplay.

Wikipedia - Griefer
A griefer is a player in a multiplayer video game who deliberately irritates and harasses other players within the game, using aspects of the game in unintended ways.[1] A griefer derives pleasure primarily or exclusively from the act of annoying other users, and as such is a particular nuisance in online gaming communities, since griefers often cannot be deterred by penalties related to in-game goals.

Pretty much the way i see it OP.

If a player is messing with others like this , then they should just report him/her.

Im amazed a mod had to come foward to confirm this , because some actually said this was not the right way to go lols.

Just stop your ridiculous anti-justice system crusade. Its annoying, good grief. Talk about griefing, you're the griefer.

Griefer - Someone who, for whatever reason, seeks to degrade the enjoyment of others in a given activity, replacing others 'enjoyment' with 'grief'.

note the word chronically in your definition. Also, someone is going to be irritated by everything, it does not denote griefing necessarily.

But chronically is the important part, really. It's the difference between me killing you once, and hunting you down everywhere and killing you constantly.

Yes, chronically, as in exactly what people were complaining about at the dye stations. Chronically using abilities that make it impossible to see the actual colours that you are using on your gear, preventing people from getting the colours they wanted because the abilities were chronically spammed over and over and over. Oh, but wait, you argued that it wasn't griefing. Despite it meeting every single part of the definition of griefing. Despite a ZOS employee stepping in to tell people to report it. Hmm, interesting.

It was the first day of the dye station being released. You can't chronically do something in that short a period of time.

And considering some of the things said to me in that thread for not condemning said "Griefers" I think some people on these forums that get their panties in a wad over this stuff are far closer to the griefer mentality.

Just stop the bad faith BS. A day is more than long enough to be a PitA.

If you're at a dyeing station, and you can't use that station for 5 whole minutes because of some jerk spamming golden-glowing healing spells ... well, let's say the first cast may be funny, the second one less so, the third you sigh, and the fourth and subsequent you are annoyed.

In case it isn't clear to you, annoyed = being griefed

Four casts takes no more than 4 seconds. 5 whole minutes is griefing, which everybody but you here seems to agree with.

You, Sir, have therefore officially declared yourself the Jerk-in-chief, mouthpiece for all your wisely silent co-griefers. Congratulations !

Azura guide me on a path far from yours.

Opinions are like buttholes : Everybody has one, and they usually stink.

    3 things to reduce stamina/magicka imbalance :
    - Use magicka to block abilities costing magicka, instead of stamina.
    - Add % damage reduction to heavy armor.
    - Add block penetration to 2H.

The fact that a mod had to come to say you can indeed report them is ridiculous , people should already know they can report this kind of behavior since the start.

To me even 15 mins of this behavior is more than enough to warrant a report.

In the end , it is zens job to judge each case , if there is reason for punishment they will deliver it.

    chron·ic
    adj.
    1. Of long duration; continuing: chronic money problems.

If people are doing this long enough to actively prevent people from using a dye station, so they have to go and try to find another one that's not infested with griefers, then that's "of long duration." Any vague term such as "of long duration" is always context-sensitive. In the context of an online game 30 minutes would count, as that's likely to take up a significant portion (or possibly even all) of a player's game time for the day.

But of course, as always, you're defending the people exhibiting anti-social behavior.

Not to single you out personally I just got this far in and read several similar posts. We are all in fact playing make believe so calling someone else a grown man acting 12 is kind of funny. They are playing how they want and enjoying their time just like you are trying to enjoy your own. The fact that they are getting this rise out of you is exactly what they want. You made their day congratulations.

I have to disagree with Smee's notion that it is only chronic if you kill the same person over and over. It is griefing if you kill everybody you see once. The bad behavior is still chronic, whether it is one victim over and over or everybody once. And let's face it, if you are just going to kill random people, you aren't keeping a list to make sure you don't do it to somebody multiple times. You are just a sadist who is going to keep on killing no matter how much you detract from everybody else's fun. And the folks with this mindset will keep killing you over and over if they can the minute you ask them (politely or rudely, doesn't matter) not to.

Sad and pathetic as it may be, I have to agree with this guy. It's not uncommon for a griefer to be a person who is attempting to compensate for their social awkwardness or personal lacking by getting a rise out of other people in an attempt to gain some feeling of control or justice. Acknowledging them in the forums, especially by making a bold statement like a dedicated thread, simply feeds the desire for attention, which in turn only increases the likeliness that the griefer will strike again because he knows he will get what he wants. Chances are, at least one of the griefers who inspired the "People are griefing at dye station with cone heals" thread will end up posting in this thread just for sheer amusement.
