I don't think anyone would call me a 'Fan-Boy', but ESO does have direction, and depth. Here are some tips:

    1. Since you are not far in, reroll either Sorcerer or Templar (Breton race).

    2. After you finish the Tutorial, immediately go back to the newbie area. You will get a quest to talk to the transport person. Do not start with the town they drop you into.

    3. Concentrate your training on your Class skill lines, and one weapon line. Destruction Staff if you are Sorcerer, Restoration Staff if you are Templar.

    4. Complete EVERY area in the zone; look for solid black icons on the map. They indicate there is still something there for you to do.

    5. Don't bother with crafting except for Alchemy and/or Provisioning. DO pick up every plant you find and sell them in zone chat (50g to 150g EACH).

    6. If you are Templar, put all your attribute points into Magicka. If you are Sorcerer, 50/50 Magicka and Health.

    7. Strive for Light Armor Magicka / Mundus Stone gear. For accessories, Magicka / Magicka Regen. Find the Magicka Regen Mundus Stone in Cyrodiil and get that one.

    8. Join a few Trading guilds, and at least one guild for Adventure friends to do Instances, World Bosses, and such with.

ESO is not a traditional 'hub' theme-park. You are meant to explore and discover things in the world. Take your time. Enjoy the story lines and the scenery.

Don't forget, go to the NEWBIE zone after the Tutorial. Don't start in the zone they drop you into.

    Good Hunting!

FYI much of this is terrible advice. So I would take it with a spoonful of salt.

this is my first mmo and I navigated pretty well. I use myself as an example because I am the most helpless effing blonde on the face of planet earth sometimes, yet I figured out this game well enough on my own with only a little bit of hand-holding. I'm a little confused, though (shocker). out of the issues you listed, why was it so difficult for you to discern a NPC from a player? the players are the ones running around like lunatics, looking at their maps or digging in their bags lol. NPC's generally stay to one area, have only a few mannerisms and have names that are otherwise *normal* for the Elder Scrolls world. oh, and the enemies are the ones with the red glow around them that are trying to kill you if you get too close.

well, in any case, I hope you warm up to it better and are able to enjoy yourself to some extent. it's a nice game. :)

"I had no idea I could set magic skills and have more than just left click to attack."

But the skills are auto loaded onto your bar when you purchase them...

you can unequip skill and equip other by dragging new skill on the bar

Right, but why would he not know there were skills and abilities? It equips them for you initially. I guess you could not know what those pictures in the little boxes at the bottom of your screen are, and why they have corresponding numbers attatched to them. i think ive seen something similar somewhere before, though. Maybe it was in another game or something...
Not only does it equip them for you initially, but a popup comes up the first time you get one that tells you how they work. So basically OP is complaining that the game doesn't tell you what to do, while simultaneously displaying the fact that he didn't read any of the tutorial text that told him what to do.

This! When I first started, it wasn't obvious to me that I was supposed to go to a starter island. I tried to just wander off and start exploring and got my butt kicked. It wasn't until I started reading up on the game that I realized I was supposed to be on a starter island learning to do stuff like basic crafting and fighting appropriate enemies.

The game really needs to make this more obvious.

Yup. Since they changed everyone starting out on tutorial and then going straight to the starter islands - same questions pop up even from non-new players bringing up an alt. In chat: "Where is that npc that can send me back to the starter island?"*****

Imagine - with new players, they don't even know to ask that question. :\

LOL, the Wailing Prison and starter islands provide great tutorials. In addition, anyone who doesn't check out forums for guidance in a game like this may be more suited to Nintendo or such.

I will go ahead here and mildly agree to this threads subject. Although I don't think the severity is quite as bad as the thread OP would make it seem - in the early stages, and still, I find there a general lack of information regarding game mechanics, combat math, loot drops, chance statistics, and item/resource locations.

For example, it is common amongst all MMO's (I understand this is not like all MMO's), there is a resource which tells where to find specific item drops, the percentage of chance for that item to drop in what areas, what types of monsters are in what areas, what drops you get from them, etc. Most games actually include this in their help page. Most games also include combat math equations to help the user understand the interoperability of all the statistics one can choose from when building a character.

For example, what DOES seem missing is crucial statistics. Such as mundus stones. Take increase critical strike chance divine. Nowhere does it dictate to you the base value for which the divine increases your chance of achieving a critical strike. This leads to a complete confusion when building sets that say increase mundus stone effect by 5% per piece. 5% of what value? The base increase for the mundus stones are no listed anywhere. Is it a straight 5% increase to critical strike value? Or 5% of the mundus stone increase value? Who knows? Because, it isn't listed anywhere [easily found].

There are moments like this left and right, and I have been playing since day 1. It is something that has completely bothered me since the the game began. There is very little documentation regarding much of the information an MMO player would expect to have. Where (without addons) does it tell you your total fire resist? ice resist? Disease resist? The list goes on. In just about any other game, I can look up exactly how many of a specific monster I've killed, kills, deaths, lifetime stats, etc. Here, you have to pick through unofficial addons to hopefully find one that does what you need.

So not to defend the OP here, because he sounds like a complete tool, but if you seriously play this game and haven't encountered any of the above stated scenarios, and said to yourself "why the **** wouldn't they have this stated somewhere" -- then I must question your intellect, or at the very least, your dedication to playing the game to the best of your ability.

I've always found TES to be profoundly bad at introducing the game for how lengthy their opening is. HOWEVER, more explanation in TES is in direct conflict with the idea that you have to actually explore and try things, which is what makes the game so fantastic.

You'll just have to roll with it.

Yeah, but the things that you're talking about are not on the same level of basics that the OP is talking about. Trying to figure out drop rates or the combat math from tool tips and such? Yeah, good luck with that - it just ain't going to happen (and yes, that can be annoying). Not knowing how skills work? That's being actively ignorant and ignoring all of the hand-holding that the game gives you.

hang in there, during beta I quit in frustration at what I thought was a limited UI and lack of directions. I was talked into coming back by my sister and after around two weeks it became second nature.

In fact, the sparse ui makes my other mmos seem hideous with their clogged ui full of unneccessary info and clutter and abilities. like you.. I went to the forums and found guides, gleaned great tips from them and there are addons you can use to help

the best tip i can tell you is to real all the tooltips, go into settings and look at keybinds, play around with settings to make things make more sense to you and read read read the forums for guides and tips

I agree quite a bit with the original poster that in-game documentation isn't great for rank beginners to the game. I'm an experienced gamer and saw the limits of the documentation.

I did what I always do when getting on a new game, though: went to the internet and searched for game help from other sources. There was (is) plenty.

I just read enough to get going and playing, then went out and found-and-read more as I encountered new things I couldn't easily figure out in-game. That seems to be the way I game when I like a game that has numerous game systems (like this one); read enough to get going and go have a little fun actually playing, then read more as I get stuck or interested in a new aspect.

With this game I really enjoyed the environments, so I was in no hurry to master anything, just loved wandering around enjoying the graphics and art design. I also enjoy the quest stories and a lot of the dialog.

My suggestion to original poster, in addition to what I already suggested about learn-as-you-go, is take advantage of this game's friendliness with 3rd party programs. There are really great add-ons, and there is Radeon Pro for SweetFX, which just makes this game look heavenly.

Cheers. I don't know how long I'll play this game, but even when I look at it as a single-player questing game I see that after four months of daily play at 2-to-6 hours average, I'm about 40% complete. Enjoy!

Yes, you originally started on those islands in the beta. People complained that they couldn't explore freely, so instead of doing the obvious thing and giving people a way to leave the island, they did the stupid thing and completely broke the intro to the game. *shrug*
