Goldsinks suck.

They take things that could be a good mechanic and turn it into an expensive tool to make sure gold doesn't get devalued. In spite of the fact that this game's economy is non-existent because the only way to trade apart from crappy guild stores is to spam WTS and WTB in zone chat.

There was a thread called "gold sinks for the future of ESO". I HATE THAT THREAD >:(. The items listed there should be given as a reward for a long questline, completing a difficult dungeon or some other feat that a player performs. Instead of rewarding us a piddly amount of gold and saying "grind the rest" just to get stuff that costs thousands of gold (houses, guildhalls). It can still cost some gold, but it shouldn't be an outrageous amount. Also, why have it cost gold when you can make it into additional stuff for the player to do?

http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/109019/gold-sinks-for-the-future-of-eso/p1

HORSES: Should cost 8k instead of 17, and a lesser verion should be given as a quest reward (a mule or donkey) and 42k is fine for a better horse because that's a late game horse and everyone already has the money they need for it by VR1.

HOUSES: A starter home should be available for free after doing a certain dungeon/questline, and the rest should be able to be purchased after a dungeon/questline for 10-100k, the cost being determined by what city they are in and how nice/big they are.

GUILDHALLS: should be tied to something your guild achieves as a team, rather than the gold that some rich guy donated to buy your guildhall. For example, guilds could participate in one of a set of events depending on their size (any guild with 30-300+ people). they would need at least 15-30% of the guild to participate (Depending on the size of the guild, with smaller ones requiring a higher %. nice and low because not everyone is on at the same time, or wants to do the event necessarily). Successfully completing the event would give them access to 1 guildhall in any city of their choosing, with upgrades and extensions being available through further events.

Also, you should be able to construct a guildhall addon to keeps you own in cyrodiil. This would give you a HUGE incentive to hold the keep because you've invested time and energy into designing it, as well as (some) gold into buying the materials to build it.

FOLLOWERS: Should be willing to join you if you do something for them in a quest (not quite as easily as skyrim though, were if you delivered a letter for them they would follow you to their death). Mercenaries should be available as an alternative form of follower, and they would cost 1-2k for 4 hours. They could do anything except group dungeons and solo stuff with you.

CHARACTER COSMETIC CHANGES: This is something that can be a goldsink. I'm actually OK with this costing some gold because there isn't a much better way to integrate it.

Goldsinks are important for a game's economy if that economy values gold. There's just not much value to it, or more particularly no value to having large amounts of it. What can you do with 1 million gold that you can't do with 500k? There's really nothing substantial to spend gold on, though I suppose an argument could be made for motifs and recipes, but aside from crafting there's little value in gold. Even then gold is a time saver rather than a requirement.

So no, keep the Goldsinks but add player housing, just don't make any house free. Make it expensive. Give me a reason to have mounds of gold. Let me eventually build up a whole town, become the lord of the land to determine town law, and rent excess houses out to the poor impoverished players. Gold needs to have meaning, but after you've hit that "horse purchasing" tier (which if anything they should add progressively more expensive horses not make them cheaper) there's no real gold goal thereafter. It's just a pile of coins you draw from on occasion to set up some more gear, or repair gear, or respec, but rarely if ever used for anything expensive, say 20k or more. There's no economic progression, just nagging gold sinks with no real purpose for having the massive amounts of gold it's trying to keep you from accumulating anyhow.

My gold has gotten to over 120k at the present and not once have I tried to earn any of it. It just keeps piling up by itself without me giving a ***. I've completely geared myself out on multiple occasions as I leveled, and in epics and legendaries. Being VR12 now I have one more gear up to do but I already have all the materials I need to include a friendly neighborhood guild crafter to construct it. Never had to buy any of it, the game literally just put the upgrade components in my mail box every day (Hirelings are great to spend excess skill points on), and just by deconstructing my drops I have stacks of raw materials, trait gems, and style mats. These things are worth more than gold is, but I imagine to someone who gives even 10% more of a *** about gaining gold than I do, which is 0% by the way, I'd say add a decimal place to the amount of gold I have to 1.2 million gold to guess how much 10% of caring about gold gain will get you (selling valuable items, playing the big trade guild stores to buy low and sell high, farming exclusively rare items, etc. for 10% of your total play time I.E. 6 minuets on every hour).

Goldsinks are a negligible nagging at a players gold, and is more often than not the only reason I ever spend it at all. I don't like them because they aren't really doing anything except being annoying. Every time I turn around I have a repair bill and I can't help but think how much more I spend on repairing gear than I've ever spent buying any. It's obnoxious just because it doesn't serve a purpose in ESO's current economy. Now if there was something to actually do with large sums of money then we're talking about a whole different concept.

As a medium-wealthy player, I disagree with your suggestion to decrease horse prices. I think they are fine as they are now, having bought 4 different 42K ones myself. A draft horse was the first thing I focused on when I started ESO in April and getting it was quite an achievement for me, even if the gold cost seems ridiculously low now.
That being said, with over 2M in bank at the moment and around 100 of each legendary mats in storage, I'm only getting richer and richer every day with no real point to it. I would like to see more ways to spend gold : costumes, housing, mounts, costumes for mounts, pets, cosmetic changes, etc.
What about billboards in the main cities to advertise for guilds or crafts ?

I couldn't agree more with OP. Everything should be free! And while they update that, they should also remove char levels and keep it to one level only. Awesome

well until they have some substantial content horses and other things will need to be the gold sink.... like every other game has had to do.

Horses use to be stupid expensive in wow but as they added more content they added more gold sinks. Unfortunately gold sinks are a necessary evil.

I would greatly welcome more ways to spend gold. Am V1, 85k in gold, finding armour everywhere and can craft it, same with weapons. Got a horse too.

I would be very wary of carrying 85k around a place like Tamriel. Houses, more mounts, guild halls, new costumes, these would all be welcome.

I wouldn't like houses to cost something stupid like 1 million gold. I don't think housing should be only open to traders ;)

I admit it would be more RP ;)

In fact, I don't mind how expensive it is as long as we can buy a land, start off with some *** she'd and slowly work towards upgrading it ;)

Followers? ... How about "NO." We don't need no stinking followers.

I do, however, like the idea of guilds earning guild halls.

Don't want or need a "home."

Your right. Horses are too expensive. Loot or AT LEAST Quest gold rewards need to be be better.

Gold Sinks did their job in helping 4 of my 5 RL friends quit. They were tired of always being bankrupt and watching only the dupers, cheaters, exploiters and pets get ahead.

Gold Sinks should only be there for high levels, not for every level. All they do at low level is grief people and sap the feeling of achievement.

But it becomes "just a dredge" and "well, work" if you are always forced to hand over 3/4 of your reward. It is the ultimate destroyer of gratification. I would rather run out of content to chase for a month than never be allowed to advance.
