I hate being dismounted running through a puddle on my horse. The question is simple..... should horses be able to swim?

You don't get dismounted when running through a puddle.

Your hyperbole negates the point you are trying to make, unfortunately.

Obviously.... you haven't been dismounted in a puddle that goes only up to the horses knees? I'm sorry, but a puddle by definition is a small pool of water. I have been dismounted by plenty of those.

In oblivion you could ride them into water, with their head below the water and they didn't drown. I didn't like that.

Edit, I didn't like that it wasn't real, not saying I tried to kill my horse (I didn't).

I also found it was usually just faster to swim without the horse. Unless of course you cast Water Walking on the horse ("Sea Horse", best spell ever: Fortify Speed for 5 minutes on touch, Water Walking for 5 minutes on touch).

Yeah, I don't like being dismounted too, especially if its just like 2 meters of deeper water. A good idea would be not to get dismounted, but make swimming on horses slower then normal swimming. If I'm not totally mistaken it was like this in Skyrim?

Personally, I think the fact they're not swimming isn't a problem. But the fact you can't share them between alts, sell them in guild store or AH, or simply grab a friend behind you to ride along a much bigger problem.

I would love to ride around with a friend behind shooting arrows at ennemies

    Not exactly.

The horse can cross a river with a rider on its back, but it generally won't choose to. More importantly, the rider knows not to force it to unless it's absolutely necessary, because it poses an extreme risk to both rider and horse. And our horses (once they hit a higher level) are often laden down with bags, armor, etc.

So those of you taking the "realism" angle may want to actually do some horseback riding. You don't ride that horse across the river unless there's no bridge for miles.

Do we have any equestrians out there who know from experience whether it's actually possible to ride a horse through water that's deep enough where the horse needs to swim? How about when the rider and/or the horse is carrying a couple hundred pounds of equipment?

I'm thinking, "no", but I'd be interested to know what people with real experience have to say.

Edit: I think the person above must have been typing at the same time I was.

There are Cowboys films with horses swimming with their riders on, actually footage of it happening not modern CGI trickery.

But they are not laden with gear, just the cowboy and a saddle, no saddle bags, no rifle, bare minimum weight. From this I would say it's just about possible, but not if you are carrying stuff or wearing armour.

Yes, and what you see in films is done by extremely talented riders. They hire some of the best people for that work, because an actor without the right experience (everyone except Viggo Mortensen) would probably get killed. And you're right: gear/armor would drown the horse.

Here's a basic summary of what happens when you try to cross a river with a horse (and let's be clear, this is the most you can do with one): the horse starts kicking wildly to keep its head above water and still make it across the stream. The horse's body is rocking a lot from side to side as its legs move, and since you're in water, this motion is unsaddling you. If you don't know how to negotiate that, you slide off and immediately get pulled under the horse and kicked. Hard. You die because you're unconscious underwater.

This thread gives a poll question and I responded with my opinion.. Horses should be able to swim but not with someone riding them... the notion that *any player & their horse* can just go straight into whatever body of water, no matter how deep, whenever, while on horseback is ridiculous.... While it is certainly possible to swim while mounted on your horse, it is not routine. I prefer the current system.

I think Oblivion did it quite well. It was possible, but not practical for a long distance. In ESO, the horse's stamina could be relevant. Consumes stamina to swim, once the stamina is depleted, you get dropped off.

In other news, I got dismounted while going through a cave in the north of Rivenspire (between Northpoint and Doomcrag). That was unnecessary IMO; there was no valid reason to kick me off in there as it's part of the open overworld and a required part of the walking route.

It doesn't add much to the game. I prefer them adding character swimming with underwater zones. And it could actually work with spellcrafting (alteration school ) to make you breathe under water.

These horses can barely keep themselves above water with a 120 pound teen on their back, I can't see them swimming with a fully armored and weaponed adult. Quite frankly, I think they are walking on the bottom of the pond anyway.

Please no. I actually like that you can't go underwater in this game. I know that I'm likely the overwhelming minority in this, but I have a very severe hydrophobia (well, virtual hydrophobia) and I start hyperventilating when underwater stuff comes along. I didn't finish a lot of content in a LOT of games because of underwater crap.

Actually horses are pretty poor swimmers. You would actually be able to beat almost any horse in a swim race. The exception being if you can only float or you happen to be exhausted.

Swimming a horse in deep water can easily drown it, especially if you are carrying a bunch of heavy gear. I see the point in not wanting to be dismounted, however. So I'll agree with that point.
