I'm having some new ink-work done soon and as part of it I want to use the ES Ouroborus logo.
I notice the little trade mark symbol on every official pic so i was wondering, do I need permission to use it?

Seems a daft question I know but i'm sure I remember reading about somebody getting into trouble by having a game logo or something tattooed on themselves that was visible.

Can anyone advise on this?

Oh and no, i'm not after freebies for advertising :p

While we don't really give specific written permission to use the Ouroboros, as long as you're not somehow making money off of it or using it in a vulgar way, you're free to use the design in your tattoo. Be sure to send us some pictures when it's finished!

A tat based on a video game is a questionable choice.

Kind of like putting your GF's name as a tat. Seems like a good idea at the time, but will you still feel the same way in 10 years or 20 years? Or next week?

Nah, i'm 40 this year and got my first ink when I was 16, not regretted any work I had done. my best piece so far if a whole arm work where my skin is torn and it's alligator scales underneath :)

I have a good idea for this next piece but lets just say for now that the serpent is gonna make an appearance too ;)

In all my years, i have yet to encounter a time when that ever sounded like a good idea.

I've done a lot of questionable things in my life but never once did i think that having a tattoo of my girlfriends name was a good idea.

and if you google more, has all been made into tats, and none have ever been taking legal action against.

You'd only take legal action in the absolute most dire circumstances (like the butthole/daedric portal example). It's essentially free marketing of the best kind. Share some pics though, sounds cool.

I am not into tattoos myself, but the ESO log is a very cool looking version of the Oourobos idea even without the game connection. If I were to get a tattoo I could definitely see this even if I decided I hated ESO two weeks later. (Not likely that would happen, but you see my point.) I hope it turns out well for you.

Agreed, it's not like it's text saying "Elder Scrolls Online Forever" or something. 3 dragons eating each others tails is fairly innocuous, and almost just has a tribal like feel to it. Would sort of make for an interesting ankle or arm tattoo, encircling the appendage. (Not that I'm personally in favor of tattooing. I've never met somebody and thought "wow, they'd be really attractive with a tattoo". I have, however, met several people and thought "wow, they'd be really attractive if they DIDN'T have that tattoo".

Ah well, people get their endorphin rushes in different ways.

Except the tattoo is not based on a video game. The symbol her is referring to is an ancient symbol which Zenimax have altered to fit their needs which is fair enough.

"The Ouroboros often symbolizes self-reflexivity or cyclicality, especially in the sense of something constantly re-creating itself, the eternal return, and other things such as the phoenix which operate in cycles that begin anew as soon as they end. It can also represent the idea of primordial unity related to something existing in or persisting from the beginning with such force or qualities it cannot be extinguished. While first emerging in Ancient Egypt, the Ouroboros has been important in religious and mythological symbolism, but has also been frequently used in alchemical illustrations, where it symbolizes the circular nature of the alchemist's opus. It is also often associated with Gnosticism, and Hermeticism." - Wikipedia

Not the most reliable of sources, but it's a lot more reader-friendly than most dusty old texts out there.

So if he ever falls out of love with ESO, the tattoo will still have secondary and tertiary meanings to fall back on.

Although totally with you on the gf tattoo thing. Don't do that OP. At least ESO isn't going to call you 15 times during the night because it had a dream where you played another game, and when you awake in the morning to return the calls are accused that you didn't answer because you were playing that other game and ESO hates you and you're the worst person ever.

    Yeah.

Even if you were to regret it, you could essentially just alter it slightly and say its an Ouroboro tattoo which many people have. I am getting one that is similiar but it is the Viking serpent Jörmungandr wrapped around my left arm. That's the sibling of Fenris the wolf which is on my right arm.

I agree. Many video game tats are something most folks wouldn't get unless they played. The logo is something that looks like tats today and people love that look. If you got to get one its as good a choice as any and better than some.
