Looking forward to the 'Martial Disciplines' update!

Are you also looking forward to that 'Martial Disciplines' update? You know, the one they haven't talked about yet? Coming around soon after we get Spellmaking.

I heard it will let us train and combine various movements and combat styles into complex new abilities?

I thought it was a pretty awesome presentation that they didn't make at that event they haven't had yet. The way they added polearms and quarter staves and short bows and crossbows and one-handed weapons and unarmed abilities to the game! Wow!

And the systems seemed fairly complex, with a lot of depth in character development, just the kind of thing that gives us something to look forward to. If you missed it, I'll list some of the highlights here!

Martial Disciplines

- Martial Disciplines lets us create new abilities. The crafting process involves a martial styles of various ranks, individual moves, and class-based traits, with a smidgen of mystical prowess to top it off!

Martial Styles

- Players start off knowing their racial styles, and can learn the other martial styles by visiting wandering masters in the wilderness (exploration content). These masters may require a test of skill before they teach you anything.

- Each style has four ranks (Novice, Apprentice, Journeyman, Master), and each rank gives the player the ability to do new things with the moves they know.

- Racial styles govern specific weapons and movement combinations, and judge the animations that are used. As you could guess, Yokudan Sword-Singers are the ultimate in one-handed swords, and thus you'd want to train from one of them to really be the best with that weapon. Some styles may govern more than one class of weapon and armor.

- Some racial styles are lost to the ages! But maybe by visiting with the spirits of past masters, or even traveling in time, you can learn from them!

Combat Moves

- The moves themselves are learned from experience. You can learn a new move from fighting NPC's and even other players in the world, and I think it's great how they are adding dueling to help us with this!

- As an example, you may need to find an NPC using a one handed weapon and fight them 10 times in order to learn the 'Slash' combat move. But from that same NPC, you would also learn the 'Stab' combat move at the same time.

- Some of the really powerful abilities can only be learned from bosses, including extremely unique ones learned only in veteran dungeons and trials!

- Combat moves are sometimes limited only to a few weapon types, or are universal, depending on their nature.

Martial Style Ranks

- Advancing your Martial Style's rank involves using abilities within that style (much as leveling current skills), and then revisiting the master for further testing.

- As a novice, we are able to do basic movements. These basic movements each include a benefit for their action (a sword slash, for instance, has a cone attack and can hit multiple targets).

- As an apprentice, those moves can be formed into combo's with other moves of the same weapon type, creating unique abilities. These combo include the benefits and damage output of both moves (combining a slash and stab would combine the AOE hit of the slash, with extra damage at the end for a single target that ignores a small bit of armor).

- And as a journeyman, we can attach a special class-based traits to the abilities, which are defined by the strengths of our individual classes and what level the player is in his class skill lines (as a Nightblade who has level 25 in the Assassination skill line, you have learned the combat move trait 'bleed', which you can then apply to any moves or combo's you know).

- A master of that particular style not only can combo moves and add class traits, but can add mystical prowess to our moves, much like an enchantment on an item (in example, this bleeding Slash/Stab combo also adds a small HOT to the attack, as you gain part of your opponents life energy).

Mystical Prowess

- A particular style has three possible mystical 'dedications', which a player can choose only one. For our Yokudan Sword-Singers, this could add a boon to damaging/defending against undead, or to giving your sword extra damage overall (due to their attachment with their weapon), or by giving each attack a life-absorption HOT. By choosing one boon, you can alter the mystical properties of each movement you created in that style.

Armors and Shield Included

- Martial Disciplines aren't just about weapon attacks, either, and certain Martial Styles can cover defensive abilities and skills!

Create your own class!

Obviously, with the complex additions in spellmaking and martial disciplines, the mechanics used for classes (and many of the current abilities) would have to be reconsidered, as players now have the tools to completely create the class they wish to be.

As you can see, I'm excited! I simply can't wait for third quarter 2015!!!

Note: The above was merely a concept post, hopefully with enough humor to get you smiling. I'm not against spellmaking at all, but would love to see something just as comprehensive and fulfilling for melee users, while also being unique in our own way and hopefully well within the lore.

And no, this isn't a real thing yet, at all. Just a daydream post.

    I'm actually okay with this.

Between spell crafting and system similar to the one you've fleshed out I can see classes becoming obsolete in the future and ESO would starting feeling like a TES game (and not just looking like one). Obviously class skills would need to be incorporated into the game, somehow, but still! I know a majority would hate a system like this due to levelling alts and whatnot, so it doesn't seem entirely feasible.

As it stands, ESO feels very magically inclined. Between the class spells, the lack of 'real' Stamina counterparts and the fact during every other quest you have to utilise magic (activate this tower with your magic! Open this door with your magic! Make more magic with your magic!). Having weapon ultimates, Stamina alternatives, a wider variety of weapons (unarmed, spear, throwing) and some 'brute strength' questing options (I don't want to cast a spell, I want to smash the door down!) might help balance the system a little bit (and this is coming from a person who only plays mage based characters, so I sympathise with all the Stamina enthusiasts out there).

I openly welcome a Morrowind-like system, with skills which fall under a specific archetype. Obviously there will be three, the thief, mage and warrior (see: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Skills) and you can specialise in a specific number of skills (probably something akin to 4 upon creation which can be changed at level 10 or something), but still progress other skills to a reduced cap. The issue with all of this is balancing, things would get hairy relatively quickly and people are comfortable with the current system. Not to mention the sheer amount of coding and time which would be required. But imagine it, you can make a healing assassin type character or a arcane warrior or a ranger who summons undead minions.. The combinations would be very interesting.

ESO isn't the game I expected it to be, don't be me wrong I'll play it, max a few alts and grind the achievements, but it can definitely use some spit and polish.

But I digress entirely, interesting concept, two thumbs up.

Unfortunately, that kind of update (which may finally make stamina builds ok) probably wont be for months after the spell crafting update which sounds like it will be the final blow for stamina builds.

I'd really like to see a passive somewhere that lets you wield 2handed weapons in 1 hand - either dual wielding 2handers (with a damage/attack speed penalty of course) or using a 2handed weapon with a shield. Would be even more interesting if doing so allowed you to use skills from both trees; so if you were dual wielding two handers, you'd get to use abilities/attacks from both the 2handed and dual wield tree, and if you were using a 2hander + shield you'd get to use abilities/attacks from both the 2handed and 1h/shield tree.

Would really love to turn my templar into a juggernaut with heavy armor, a big kite or tower shield, and a two handed maul in one hand.

Seems good , nothing something TES like , actually would probably be the most complex martial system to ever enter a TES game , but seems good.

Still , would take probably ten times the effort that it took to make the spell crafting system. So i would not count it.

I would really enjoy having polearms in the game.

What if: you only unlocked Martial Disciplines at 50, and the challenges, tests, and exploration could happen in previous zones (phased to VR levels, like many of us have requested)?

So you'd need class skills to 50, but after 50 you specialize your own content.

Are you sure the Yokudan Sword-Singers use 1 handed swords? both Sai Sahan and the Tharn Clone use 2 handers...

And did they say how they were going to stop the abuse ePeen Duelers seem to get off on? I suspect the "Opt Out" function will be added, but what about the verbal and emote abuse? did they talk about it in the presentation they have not done at the future event that has not yet been announced? I know when I talked to Matt Firor last week he was concerned about it.

I'm confused, but not feeling confrontational. Any dueling function, properly implemented, in any game, would have to have an opt-out function that players can set. This is pretty standard fare, and allows you to decline all duels (I currently use mods to decline all group requests, guild invites, etc, which are also spammable and abusable).

As far as the Yokudan using one or two-handers? I don't exactly know, as I was just pulling the example out of my nether areas to make it a little easier to comprehend.

Whether players who are not Redguard could learn the Yokudan arts, on the other hand, I see no problem with it. According to in-game lore, DragonKnights originated in the Imperial province of Cyrodiil (don't quote me on that, as it's my faulty memory we're trusting) and the style has spread since.

In my mind, it's like saying someone can't learn Kung-Fu without being asian.

Then lore-wise, it would make sense if the unarmed combat teachers are Khajiit. After all, because of their claws, they always had passive skills related to that.
All in all it seems their martial art is something vaguely related to Kung Fu; the feline woodworking hireling, Pacrooti, mentions some different unarmed combat styles of his people, like ''Whispering Fang'', and it seems there is a spiritual side to their combat techniques as there are quite a few Khajiit npcs practicing & meditating in Khajiiti temples in game.

If they could balance stamina builds in that meantime to be equal to magicka, I think I'd agree.

Just imagine the balance testing that's going to be needed for spellcrafting alone. It's going to be rediculous how many broken, useless and overpowered abilities will be generated with this. Not because ZOS sucks, but because it sounds like they are trying to introduce a really powerful and unique system for generating spells, and with that comes a lot of issues in general.

I read through the entire original post and found no information on polearms.

    I'm disappointed, saddened and distraught.

I am further confused by your confusion.
Ruze Aulus. Mayor of Dhalmora. Archer, hunter, assassin. Nightblade.
Gral. Mountain Terror. Barbarian, marauder, murderer. Nightblade.
Na'Djin. Knight-Blade. Knight, vanguard, defender. Nightblade.

    XBOX NA
Ruze is a veteran of the PC Beta, lived through the year one drought, survived the buy-to-play conversion, and has stepped foot in the hells known as Craglorn. He mained a nightlbade when nightblades weren't good, and has never worn a robe. He converted from PC during the console betas, and hasn't regretted it a moment since.

He'd rank ESO:TU (in it's current state) a 4.8 out of 5, loving the game almost entirely.

This is an multiplayer game. I should be able to log in, join a dungeon, join a battleground, queue for a dolmen or world boss or delve, teleport in, play for 20 minutes, and not worry about getting kicked, failing to join, having perfect voice coms, or being unable to complete content because someone's lagging behind. Group Finder and matchmaking is broken. Take a note from Destiny and build a system that allows from drop-in/drop-out functionality and quick play.
