FYI when you download the patch you might only get about 10 kb/s (extremely slow). If this happens try pausing the download and then starting it again. It made my download speed jump to a few mb/s (much faster).

I repeated that method a few times to download the most recent patch pretty quickly.

That sounds like an issue with your connection/firewall. Client bugs don't cause slow download speeds, especially not speeds that are fixed by pausing and re-starting the download.

and you're talking about the launcher (which admittedly is garbage) rather than the client.

If you are getting extremely slow download speeds, pause the download, and exit the launcher. Re-start the launcher and you'll be back to full speed. It IS an issue with the launcher/downloader as many posted on this forum about this problem when they deployed the last huge update (it was almost 9 gigs).

The ESO_Launcher is not the cause of a slow download, its per default set to draw anything it can iirc. Also you are aware that at times a client may obtain a slow path to the destination repository? Shutting the .exe down obviously disconnects you and so a new path to the repository are established on next launch :o
If there would be any issues with the download speed it is more likely a pipeline issue on the host, that is if you have the desired speed on other connections/hosts.

Nothing in the launcher should be rate limiting the connection. There is in the settings where you can set the max download rate, but it defaults to "unlimited". Doesn't mean there isn't an issue, but...

It really sounds like a connection issue. Most ISP, for whatever reason, will burst the initial requests. This works great for small(ish) files.

But after that burst it throttles that stream if the data hasn't transferred yet. If it doesn't correct the data stream to what can actually be done, then you're going to be stuck at the throttled rate.

I've had to correct this on many images (500MB+ size) when viewing over an HTTP link. An image would be dog slow downloading (10-30K), so I'd stop it, hit Shift+Reload to ignore the browser cache, and what do you know, I'm downloading at a much better speed now. No need to restart my web browser, just re-initiate the connection.

That, or another thing I've had happen is the specific route chosen for a connection had a bad router on it (overloaded), so it was dropping packets and the link just couldn't push the data through. Once that router was taken out of the mix, everything was fine.

I too believe the problem is with the launcher. I spent 3 days back & forth with tech support. Tried all their suggestions, including trying to install it on my laptop from my router at work (to eliminate possible modem/isp issues) but all to no avail. I play a number of other games that have launchers & huge downloads and they all work just fine.

In the end I had to abandon the idea of downloading the whole game online and when I get a moment will drop into my local gaming store in the hopes that this will allow me to finally install it.

you will still be hit with the same issue since the launcher will need to heavily patch the game client that the disk installer has put onto your machine.

when I run the ESO game configuration report generator it __always__ reports one failure in the generated data; that it could not connect to launcher.bethesda.net

I have never successfully tracerouted or been able to ping this address, even external tools outside of my own ISP fail to connect to this IP. if the game launcher is attempting to hookup to this address then that may be why we see poor performance or in my case a launcher that always displays the "Loading..." message for about an hour if i start it fresh.

the launcher for this game is a piece of junk.

Thanks for the tip Enem. Yes I figured this could be the problem, but I am hoping that at least I will get the initial game installed and will then only have to wait for the grind of the latest update. Here's hoping.
