Grinding - Am I the only one who found this mind numbing ?

I saw an in zone chat come up the other day which read "need healer for *****" so I thought yeah I'll see what level I need to be, he replied "as long as you can heal you're welcome" so I ported to them . We then entered this place, we then made our way through while being told to avoid the mobs. I found out this was a grinding/exploiting situationbut had no joy or excitement from it & asked to leave. I understand peoples reasoning for doing this, they want to be at max level asap, but I thought games were fun ? One of the players said they had levelled their main from VR1 to VR12 this way, they must of spent 14-15 hours in the same spot at least

Sorry for the long post, just wondered if anyone else shared the same view ?

EDIT: Thank you for the advice, didn't realise it was classed as exploiting just thought it was one of the grind spots.

Just FYI, it is considered and exploit to be in a location where you cannot be reached by mobs that you are attacking. And considered a serious forum violation to post instructions on how to exploit!

Ouch. I would edit your post immediately and remove all the text.

Bug report the 'perch', if you haven't already.

Perching - where you can attack an enemy with no risk of being attacked - is not intended and the map should be fixed to prevent it.

    Yes.

I would rather take a slow path that I enjoy than grind like that, but to each his own; some find it enjoyable. #shrug

No you're not alone, I feel the same way.

You find these types of players in every MMO. They will take the path of least resistance to get to their destination (max level).

What can you do? It's their game, their choice. Just find a guild of like minded people you can enjoy the game with.

That's grinding for you, it's repetitive and potentially boring.. Thus grinding.

If you dislike it don't do it, it's simple. I know people who like grinding and have a full set of rank 12s because of it but ultimately play the way you want to play. I'll personally quest my alt to rank 12 before grinding a third and fourth up to 12.. because repeating content, even questing, becomes a grind.

grinding is fine, exploiting glitches to grind faster is not, this is the same as cheating, but zos wont ban half their vr player i imagine

So using the landscape as a battle tactic is now an 'exploit' in this game?

    Really?

What's next, using LOS is an exploit because the mob can't attack?

I never grind as grinding is not fun. In fact i am almost V12 by just doing quests and PvP. I am almost done with the Rift and i enjoyed the ride. All quests where fun except most in AD. But i can say i had fun because i did not grind one bit.

I was banned from AoC because i had the "climb" skill so i could shoot other players in PvP who did not have the "climb" skill.

If mobs cannot reach you in TESO they reset mostly. Except ranged mobs as they can hit you. I don't call it exploiting but tactics. I am using bow and i arn well should get advantage when i shoot from higher ground. If a boss is a melee and one ranger i can seperate them this way. I call it tactics.

Probably. Depends on what you are doing and how you are doing it.

The ease at which some people who play this game and frequent these forums seem to habitually roll the word "exploit" off their tongues when there is no actual exploit and, instead, they are really just discussing something they just don't like but need a fotm ubuzzword (and "elitist" won't do for some reason lol) makes my left eye twitch at times, but this does not seem to be one of them.

Using pathing or aggro bugs to create a situation of invulnerability, particularly one that also allows a player to kill a mob, has always been considered an exploit in MMOs going back the better part of two decades. It can get a little iffy in some situations and in some games but, in general, this is the textbook example of an exploit, really. The only more egregious example I can think of would be a duping bug or something like that.

LOS is a little different because there are often legit mechanics that allow los to be used for ducking out of some type of ranged attack...Not sure how it applies to this game but the NB stealth basically let's you do that (or did...think it was tweaked in some way in a patch) so I can't imagine using a corner to avoid mobs casting being a problem assuming it can chase you. Mobs don't generally aggro thru walls which is good and I can't imagine using that is a problem. Would be stupid if it were, really. Really just depends on the specifics.

Generally speaking, the rule of thumb to go by is if a mob is aggro and can't hit you no matter what it tries to do and you are able to damage it, you may have found an exploitable bug and your best bet is to report it and stay away from it. This doesn't mean that's the case in every situation, obviously, like where longer distances are concerned, but if you find yourself mentally lawyering it, don't. Being able to use terrain to your advantage through smart tactics is great, and means the game was well designed to allow for it. Using a pathing bug to be invulnerable for an unlimited amount of time is not and is an exploit.

OP: You were right to reflexively reject what these people were doing because they were cheating, plain and simple. But don't confuse that with real grinding, which is legitimate game play.

Yeah, you are the only one. Everything in games are grinding, chasing highscores, maintain rp-relations, doing quest etc. All is grinding!

I did not grind levels on my main AT ALL. I can understand people doing it a bit on alts, but yes I believe it's something I would be bored to heck on! I find collecting materials boring at times, let alone grinding the same thing over and over. I don't understand why people sell themselves short in a race to VR12... well at least with their mains I'd call it that.

Exploiting a bug where you can avoid being attacked or something similar definitely needs to be fixed, but otherwise, there's nothing wrong with grinding. It's not everyone's cup of tea obviously, but it's a good option to have especially since most of this game's other vet progression methods (questing, dungeons, etc.) offers glacially slow xp gain.

I ground out the last VR level in Craglorn because I didn't know what else to do to get there. I've done every quest in Tamriel and Cyrodiil (not grinding out those daily quests every day for 15-30k a pop, thanks) and questing in Craglorn just wasn't going to happen. The first few minutes of grinding were enjoyable and yeah the ridiculous amount of loot I got to decon was awesome, but after 5 or so hours of the same mobs dying at a trial pace, I felt like my brain had melted. I don't understand how people can make that their whole leveling experience.

I often wondered about gamers who attacked MMOs this way. What I came up with is some gamers enjoy playing a game (like myself) others enjoy beating them any way possible.

    To each their own.
