Thoughts on STEAM...

Steam gets Elder Scrolls Online to market to their audience and sell it %40 less than what I paid for it three months ago (which includes a dog to follow you around, as well as a rodent and a crab). I spent four Beta testing sessions on a game that barely functioned and was rewarded with a monkey. I recall the ESO homepage that advertised the Imperial Edition as a limited time offer...that we had to ACT NOW to secure our copy of that deluxe version of the game...seems like it's still around and not quite as "limited" as originally pitched. Meanwhile, I just ranked up to V2, only to discover there is no attribute or skill point given for all the effort, but a costume was emailed to me ingame to wear as a reward (with no benefit or perk outside of looking like an Auroran from Skyrim). After all the fuss about elusive motifs that are endlessly advertised in chat for thousands of gold; not to mention the hours of gametime required to be able to even utilize the high level crafting styles...a costume as a reward for my effort seems a little thoughtless and cheap. Although I do enjoy the game most of the time, it's too bad Zenimax is choosing not to concentrate on a quality game in all aspects (gameplay and aesthetics) PRIOR to expanding its customer base.
If people have ever thought our current customer service is slow or somewhat unresponsive, just wait until Steam gets into the loop and you have to direct your questions to their support team...you're in for a real treat; twenty versions of "read the End User Agreement" and "have you tried this" or some other canned dribble that adds up to "too bad, we have your money, you signed the User Agreement and you cant have it back, and the problem you have is not with us but with your computer settings."
Finally, to intentionally repeat myself, as a consumer I think a better approach would be to make the game great first, keep your current customers interested and enthusiastic and THEN sell more of your great product...but it seems like the Steam party has already started.

I'm sure you're right, but I haven't spent much time in the forums. After reading what was advertised on Steam I decided to share my thoughts with the ESO community, and am guilty as charged. Thank you for your valuable input.

    1. Discounts were offered through 3rd-party retailers for pre-orders too.
    2. Sales are a thing. It's called capitalism.
    3. At no point did they ever claim that the Imperial Edition was a limited offer. In fact, they specifically said it would always be available as an upgrade.
    4. You don't like monkeys as much as dogs. Too bad. They can't account for personal taste.

I think the steam release was actually a good idea, it did bring in a lot of new players what we needed, I have experienced this in one of the guilds I am a.member if. Two new people I've talked to and only one of them had the dog so apparently it only comes with Imperial Edition. If this was obvious, sorry, I missed it :P

After having the community drop then slowly starting to increase, now it was further boosted with steam being the 3rd best selling game in the past week. And the earlier mentioned new members were actually a bit afraid to try the game, even though one of them was in beta, due to the.negative reviews about it but are happy to be surprised how fun the game is.

If it wasn't on sale, they, and others, might have not bought it. I do not understand why anyone would be upset for a sale, that and price drops are natural. That said, I preordered my Imperial Edition for the price of the regular one on green Man gaming so we had sales even before release.

It is good to see zones full abd even quite a lot of people in Vr5+ zones. I occasionally read about WS and was surprised to see people are almost begging for server merges as they don't see people even in starter zones.

Edit: sorry for typos, wrote this on a phone.

TBF, monkeys can chew your face off and rip yours hands from your wrists.

Well, that was a chimpanzee but monkeys probably could too. Simians are very unpredictable, my monkey pet makes me very nervous.

When was the imperial edition said to be limited? They said physical copies of the imperial edition (which includes the physical items) would be limited and it was. They made no mention of limited supplies for digital orders, which are still offered through their website and through other third party retailers and now steam.

You people are acting like this is the first time steam has ever offered exclusives or bonuses for buying something or that an mmo reduces their price and offers incentives for new players. It's absolutely ridiculous.

This is pretty much making a problem out of something that never was.

Yea Steam did an exclusive for Thief where you could get a skin in TF2 that looked like the main character. I play a spy in TF2 but couldn't afford Thief even at the cut rate at the time. So much sadness. I certainly didn't start demanding it for free when I got the money to pay for Thief though (what with being a long time TF2 player.)

At least it was an option, no? No option here.

Limited was marketing spin in relation to the physical boxed set. Don't get me wrong though, I hate artificially limited content period in games where I shouldn't have to worry over minute things and enjoy, fully, the content.

not anymore, it was an exclusive. It was available for a limited time. Also, looking like the lead from Thief while backstabbing people in TF2 > a animated dog following you around in ESO.

I want the option to have the "Marcus Phoenix" skin and be equipped with a flaming orange Lancer to chainsaw every monkey I see, as well as players who use Primal heavy armor...those horns are just too much.

Firstly to the OP: Can you put some paragraphs in rather than one massive bulk of text. Much easier to read.

Secondly. Sales are a normal things and I bought my pre-ordered version 30% off at GMG because they released codes for it, also everything goes on sale for a few months.

Further the only thing steam users get as an exclusive is a useless little annoying dog, however the pre-orders got the explorer pack, which is 100% more useful and valuable than a little dog. I don't get the massive fuss over steam. Are the trading cards so important to you all? Is it so important for you to show everyone else how much time you have spent in this game? (you do know you can check your time in-game using the /played command) Lastly if you want to chat with your friends over steam add it as a non-steam game? Or what is this madness that now that it is possible to play it on steam everyone has to, please don't tell me te 5 steam achievement you get..

The Steam stuff -does- matter to me. I want my fun playing cards, the announcement to my steam friends that I am in the game, the achievments (when they have them) etc.

I just don't think it is worth the ragefest everyone else is bringing over it.

I am curious if they will offer the chance to add it to Steam for realz at some point in the future now that people have put it out there that they want that though.

    TL DR;
I'm jelly other people got the game when there was a discount and I don't.. they also got a dog and can buy imperial edition. Now i'll say just randomly that i don't like current VR system (btw, it'll change in some months.. Just unsuscribe till then if it sucks so much..) , i want more motifs, i don't like customer support, i don't like steam, i don't care if anyone likes it, they shouldn't sell the game there until.. it becomes cooler?

You know, I've noticed, as an observation, that the people that complain about other people crying racist are generally racists that hate being called that.

So when I see someone complain about that, it's like they put a big sign over their head that says "I am a bigot."

    Food for thought.

Totally agree with the OP. The offer on Steam says I should have not bothered to beta test ESO and help ZOS with their launch, not to mention pre-order ESO so that they had my cash to support them during the launch, because better offers were coming and will improve as time goes on and more digital sites get ESO for sale on their lists.

So no point in helping ZOS to make ESO successful just wait, hold on to your cash and get a better deal later...good marketing... :(

Yes I do realize that, however the white wolfhound should also be offered in the game as a quest reward so those who have supported ZOS from the beginning don't feel like they need to re-purchase ESO every time a new sale/offer is put out.

Obviously the dev team is not talented enough to do things like that though or they would have worked on a quest and already put it into the game.

Then again I suppose they can't afford to give out this as a quest reward seeing as sales of ESO have dwindled to almost nothing and subs are getting cancelled faster then new subs are being made.

I suppose it is just a matter of time before they announce ESO is changing to Free to Play with an in game store to support it and then we can all buy these items.

With this logic, you should not buy any games till they are out for several months so that you can wait for a discount or just buy it at a lower price.

ESO should have marketed on Steam at the outset like Skyrim etc. Then most of the Bethesda games could be accessed with the same front end and have a common community.
