Why am I limited in the amount of times I can delete a character?

Title is self explanatory.

I don't understand why I can only delete a certain amount of characters.

I like to experiment with different builds while I figure out what I want to play, and don't want a string of useless characters cluttering up my list.

I'm pretty sure it's an anti-bot maneuver. The restriction should last a day I believe? Don't know the cooldown.

They introduced the limit to combat botting. You recover one delete attempt every 24 hours, so don't worry about it too much.

The timer was added to combat bots remaking characters and non bot players abusing the quick quests that you can just run from quest giver to quest giver and make gold, delete your character and rinse and repeat. It's the reason the starter items aren't worth anything as well.

The timer is one every 24 hours, stacking at 3, it's not the end of the world.

Is it better to out-monster the monster or to be quietly devoured?

I didn't realize how quick the cooldown timer was.

Thank you all for the responses!

    Yupp, it's a bot hammer.

And the cooldown is not that long ...

As others have said it's one of the things that ZOS implemented to hinder botters and gold sellers. So, if you like being able to run around finding harvesting nodes and being able to run through open world dungeons with the boss intact and not camped with elebenty characters with names like zdfjvow and not having to read gold spammers in chat every three seconds, you can learn to live with a minor limitation on character deletion.

It's a (remarkably effective, IMHO) way of dealing with gold-spammers/farmers/etc., who tend to cycle through dozens of characters a day.
As it stands, the system Zeni put in place is far from restrictive for any normal player. You start with a bank of 3 deletes, and these regenerate at a rate of one per 24 hours, back up to a maximum "banked" amount of 3. This means you can delete up to 32 characters per month (3 the first day + 1 a day afterwards... assuming a 30-day "month").
Based on some of the comments I've seen, this system may not be working as intended for some individuals (I haven't seen it verified one way or another). But Zeni has posted that if this is not the way the delete system is working for you, then you should contact customer support.

    Hope this helps :-)
